Exploring Spatio-Spectral Electroencephalogram Modulations of Imbuing Emotional Intent During Active Piano Playing.

Imbuing emotional intent serves as a crucial modulator of music improvisation during active musical instrument playing. However, most improvisation-related neural endeavors have been gained without considering the emotional context. This study attempts to exploit reproducible spatio-spectral electroencephalogram (EEG) oscillations of emotional intent using a data-driven independent component analysis framework in an ecological multiday piano playing experiment. Through the four-day 32-ch EEG dataset of 10 professional players, we showed that EEG patterns were substantially affected by both int

Maladaptive Personality Traits of Inpatients with Self-Harm Behavior and Its Association with Suicide Intent Severity.

Introduction: Inpatients with self-harm behavior utilize a high proportion of health care resources, and determining their suicide risk may be challenging. This study examines how maladaptive personality traits in people who self-harm are associated with suicide intent severity. Methods: This was a 5-month cross-sectional study. The International Personality Disorders Examination (IPDE) ICD-10 questionnaire, Beck's Suicide Intent Scale (SIS), and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) 21 were administered. Sociodemographic and clinical data were recorded with STATA version 10.1 for statist

Including the issue of receiving payment for sex in intervention for substance use disorder: Professionals' intentions and interventions.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that a high percentage of individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) are involved in receiving payment for sex (RPS). The stigma associated with RPS may lead to non-disclosure of RPS in drug treatment services thus preventing fully benefitting from SUD treatment. Research on RPS in the context of SUD interventions is scarce. The current study examined the extent to which social workers believe they should attend to the issue of RPS as part of the treatment of addictions and the extent of their self-reported work with RPS, as associated with comfort in discussi

Young Adults' Knowledge and Perceptions of Permanent Noise-Induced Tinnitus and its Influence on Behavioural Intentions.

OBJECTIVE: Young adults' music-listening behaviours may put them at risk of developing permanent hearing loss and tinnitus. This study aimed to assess knowledge of permanent tinnitus and whether this knowledge may influence listening behaviours to a greater degree than knowledge of hearing loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A two-group (between subjects), randomised post-test only, single-factor experimental design was used to determine the effects of health message focus (permanent tinnitus vs. permanent hearing loss) on the main outcome measure of protective behavioural intention. The sample incl…

Exploring Motivations Regarding Dietary Intake Intentions in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Development and Validation of a Questionnaire.

PURPOSE: The maintenance of stable blood glucose levels in gestational diabetes patients depends on their ability to make scientific decisions. Decision-making ability is influenced by factors such as preferences, knowledge acquisition, and risk perceptions. At present, problems such as irrational dietary structure, difficulties in decision-making, and poor adherence still exist in clinical practice. The key to guiding gestational diabetes patients in developing their scientific decision-making abilities lies in identifying the weak key points that affect their decision-making abilities. There

Sense of agency and its disturbances: A systematic review targeting the intentional binding effect in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Sense of agency (SoA) indicates a person's ability to perceive her/his own motor acts as actually being her/his and, through them, to exert control over the course of external events. Disruptions in SoA may profoundly affect the individual's functioning, as observed in several neuropsychiatric disorders. This is the first article to systematically review studies that investigated intentional binding (IB), a quantitative proxy for SoA measurement, in neurological and psychiatric patients. Eligible were studies of IB involving patients with neurological and/or psychiatric disorders. We included …

The Accuracy and Stability of Intentional Change of Frontal-Ramal Inclination in Orthognathic Surgery for Facial Asymmetry Patients.

Facial asymmetry can be defined as differences in the left and right sides of the face, and most of the patients with facial asymmetry have different left and right frontal-ramal inclinations (FRIs). Restoring the symmetry of both FRIs is important in the surgery of facial asymmetry patients, but it is very difficult to achieve perfect symmetry through conventional orthognathic surgery. However, by using 3-dimensional (3D) virtual planning and CAD/CAM technolo gies, intentional change of FRIs can be possible so the symmetry can be improved. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the surgical…

Factors affecting outcomes of second intent healing of nasal defects after Mohs micrographic surgery.

Reconstruction of nasal defects secondary to Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) presents particular challenges related to the complex topography, skin quality, tissue laxity, and functional and aesthetic concerns of the region. Factors affecting outcomes resulting from second intent healing (SIH) on the nose have not been well described. The purpose of the study was to identify factors impacting outcomes of SIH for nasal tumors following MMS. Retrospective analysis was performed of all nasal lesions treated with MMS followed by SIH from a single surgical center over a 1.5-year period. Ninety-six

Patterns of relapse and long-term outcome in patients treated with a curative intent for advanced Hodgkin lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Consolidation radiotherapy for advanced Hodgkin lymphoma (AHL) is controversial. Precise knowledge of the most likely relapse location is crucial for radiotherapy planning. We performed detailed patterns of relapse analyses and evaluated if initial bulky disease, initial 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG)-avidity and/or a residual mass on computed tomography (CT)-scan after chemotherapy are sites with a high risk of relapse. This information could provide guidance for optimal use of radiotherapy in AHL. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included 133 patients treated with curatively intended ch

Prognosis of Patients with Cutaneous Angiosarcoma After Surgical Resection with Curative Intent: Is There a Difference Between the Subtypes?

BACKGROUND: The etiology of cutaneous angiosarcoma (cAS) may be idiopathic (I-cAS), or arise secondary to radiotherapy (RT-cAS), in chronic lymphedema (ST-cAS), or related to UV exposure (UV-cAS). The aim of this study was to evaluate oncological outcomes of different cAS subtypes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Non-metastatic cAS patients, treated with surgery for primary disease with curative intent, were retrospectively analyzed for oncological outcome, including local recurrence (LR), distant metastases (DM), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: A total of 234 patients were identified; 60 I-cAS, 1

Expatriates on the run: The psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on expatriates' host country withdrawal intentions.

Extant research on expatriation in high-stress environments where stress is caused by ongoing and unexpected natural crises remains limited. Drawing on stress theory, in this study, we develop a model to examine the stress-inducing effects of intra-family concerns and workplace discrimination on the intentions to leave the host country among expatriates in the high-stress environment of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We also explore whether gender and the level of work adjustment moderate the propensity of intra-family health concerns and workplace discrimination to induce psychological stress…

Are People Who Die by Intentional Medication Poisoning Dispensed Those Medications in the Year Prior to Death?

OBJECTIVE: The rate of suicidal poisoning in the United States has increased substantially over the past 20 years. Understanding whether prescription medications used for self-poisoning were recently dispensed would help inform suicide prevention efforts. Alternatively, medications for self-poisoning could have been formerly dispensed or collected from friends, family, or illicit sources. METHODS: Among those who died by intentional opioid and psychotropic poisonings, we conducted a descriptive study to determine what proportion had a recently filled prescription that could have been the mean…

Influences on intentions for obstetric practice among family physicians and residents in Canada: an explorative qualitative inquiry.

BACKGROUND: Many family medicine residency graduates indicate a desire to provide obstetric care, but a low proportion of family physicians (FPs) provide obstetric care within their practice. This suggests personal preference alone may not account for the low proportion of FPs who ultimately provide full obstetric care. If decisionmakers plan to augment the number of FPs providing obstetric care, barriers to the provision of such care must first be identified. Within this paper, we explore the perspectives of both family practice residents and early-career FPs on the factors that shaped their

Differences in overdose deaths by intent: Unintentional & suicide drug poisonings in North Carolina, 2015-2019.

Comprehensive fatal overdose prevention requires an understanding of the fundamental causes and context surrounding drug overdose. Using a social determinants of health (SDOH) framework, this descriptive study examined unintentional and self-inflicted (i.e., suicide) overdose deaths in North Carolina (NC), focusing on specific drug involvement and contextual factors. Unintentional and suicide overdose deaths were identified using 2015-2019 NC death certificate data. Specific drug involvement was assessed by searching literal text fields for drug mentions. County-level contextual factors were o…

Frontolimbic alpha activity tracks intentional rest BCI control improvement through mindfulness meditation.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are capable of translating human intentions into signals controlling an external device to assist patients with severe neuromuscular disorders. Prior work has demonstrated that participants with mindfulness meditation experience evince improved BCI performance, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we conducted a large-scale longitudinal intervention study by training participants in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR; a standardized mind-body awareness training intervention), and investigated whether and how short-term MBSR affected …
