Heterotaxy is a rare disease with high morbidity and mortality. Controversy exists over how to classify these syndromes with most cases stratified into asplenia/polysplenia syndromes or right/left isomerism. In an effort to review comprehensively specific pheonotypes associated with heterotaxy syndromes, we reviewed published cases series, adopted a classification scheme based on spleen status, and evaluated autopsy cases retrospectively with abnormal laterality at our institution. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess outcomes of liver transplantation (LTx) in patients with biliary atresia (BA).
METHODS: The Kasai procedure was performed for 358 patients at Tohoku University Hospital between January 1955 and December 2013; 64 (17.9%) required LTx. These 64 patients were divided into 4 groups according to their age at the time of transplantation: Group 1, aged <2 years (n = 27); Group 2, aged 2-9 years (n = 16); Group 3, aged 10-19 years (n = 11); and Group 4, aged ≥20 years (n = 10). From 1970 to 1987, 23 neonates with gastroschisis were treated at Kobe Children's Hospital. One patient died and 22 survived (96%). Seven patients were hypothermic upon arrival at the hospital, with body temperatures of 31.8 to 35.4 degrees C. Six patients were successfully managed by warm saline bathing (40 to 42 degrees C for one minute) to improve hypothermia. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the prenatal detection of gastrointestinal obstruction (GIO, including atresia, stenosis, absence or fistula) by routine ultrasonographic examination in an unselected population all over Europe.
