Maternal and Fetal Magnesium Balance: Impacts and Implications.

Magnesium (Mg2+) is an essential mineral that supports normal cellular metabolism, optimal musculoskeletal and neuronal functions, the immun … in the neonate, due in part to its critical role in fetal musculoskeletal and nervous development. Magnesium deficiency during pregnancy is a global health concern, and raising awareness about the importance of maintaining magnesium balance, improving dietary intake, and promoting supplementation, when needed, could help reduce associated risks. This chapter discusse …

Magnesium and its transporters in cancer: a novel paradigm in tumour development.

The relationship between magnesium and cancer is not as simple as could be assumed from the well-established requirement of magnesium for cell proliferation. Basic and pre-clinical studies indicate that magnesium deficiency can have both anti- and pro-tumour effects. In the present review, we briefly outline the new findings on the role of magnesium in angiogenesis and metastatization, and focus on the relationship between tumour cell proliferation and metabolic reprogramming, discussing how magnesium and its transporters are involved in these processes. The role of magnesium in cancer is also…

Brain norepinephrine, dopamine, and 5-hydroxytryptamine in magnesium-deprivation encephalopathy in rats.

The effect of Mg deficiency on the regional concentrations of norepinephrine, dopamine, and 5-hydroxytryptamine in the brain was studied in clinically symptomatic young rats fed a diet low in magnesium for 10 days. Decreases in magnesium concentration in the brain were not accompanied by any significant changes in these monoamines.

Calcium requirement and calcium therapy.

The mean calcium requirement of normal adults has been estimated from 212 calcium balances on 84 normal subjects and found to be 578 mg. The calcium allowance required to ensure that 95% of normal adults are in calcium balance is about 900 mg. Calcium requirement is relatively higher than that of phosphorus or magnesium because plasma calcium--and therefore urine calcium--is maintained at the expense of the skeleton in the presence of calcium deficiency, whereas plasma phosphate and magnesium--and therefore urine phosphate and magnesium--fall on phosphorus and magnesium deficient diets. Calciu

Magnesium and Its Role in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma; A Novel Therapeutic?

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally, with Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) being the commonest subtype. POAG … 300 reactions, being highly conserved within energy-dependent organelles such as the mitochondria. Magnesium deficiency has been observed in POAG and is linked to inflammatory and fibrotic responses, as well as increased oxidative stress (OS). Magnesium supplementation been shown to reduce cellular ROS, alleviate mitochondrial dysregulation and has further antifibrot …

Hypomagnesaemia in the first 10 days of severe leptospirosis.

Magnesium imbalance in leptospirosis has, for the most part, been neglected by the medical and leptospirosis communities. In a recent, retrospective study, serum concentrations of magnesium were followed in 15 patients with severe leptospirosis. The results revealed that 14 of the 15 patients developed hypomagnesaemia at some time during the first 10 days of their illness. In severely ill patients, such magnesium deficiency can worsen clinical outcome. Magnesium concentrations may affect a number of organ systems and mental status. Since altered mental status in leptospirosis is a poor prognos…

Effects of beta 1-->4 linked galactooligosaccharides on use of magnesium and calcification of the kidney and heart in rats fed excess dietary phosphorous and calcium.

Magnesium deficiency was induced in male Wistar rats by adding an excess of phosphorous and calcium to the diet (1.195 g of phosphorous and 1.04 g of calcium/100 g of diet). Feeding of these animals with a diet containing beta 1-->4 linked galactooligosaccharides (4'-GOS) (5 g of 4'-GOS/100 g of diet) increased the apparent magnesium absorption ratios and the concentrations of magnesium in the serum and femur, and reduced accumulation of calcium in the kidney and heart. We speculate that the use of magnesium increased by feeding 4'-GOS to a limited extent prevented the lower magnesium status a…

Plasma and erythrocyte magnesium levels: from validation of the method to analysis in volunteers diagnosed to migraine.

Deficiency of serum magnesium is associated with the incidence of migraine attacks. The present study aimed to evaluate plasma and erythrocyte magnesium levels in a group of patients diagnosed with migraine. Human donors were selected from basic health units (migraine, n = 25) and from a collection and transfusion unit (control, n = 25), both located in the city of Sinop, Brazil. Plasma and erythrocyte magnesium were assessed using flame atomic absorption. Plasma magnesium concentration was significantly lower in the migraine group (0.172 ± 0.018) compared to the control group (0.197 ± 0.020 m

Oral administration of magnesium hydroxide to subjects with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus: effects on magnesium and potassium levels and on insulin requirements.

Intra- and extracellular levels of magnesium and potassium were determined in 16 subjects with insulin-dependent type I diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and 30 healthy controls. Subjects with IDDM had lower levels of magnesium in muscle biopsies (p less than 0.001), plasma (p less than 0.001), and mononuclear cells (p less than 0.05), and higher urinary excretions of magnesium (p less than 0.01), and lower levels of potassium in muscle biopsies (p less than 0.001), and erythrocytes (p less than 0.05), as compared with those in controls. Magnesium hydroxide (500 mg/day) was administered orally to the d

A unified internal model theory to resolve the paradox of active versus passive self-motion sensation.

Magnesium, an important cofactor of more than 300 enzymes, has previously been found to modulate blood lipid levels, atherogenesis and atherosclerosis in rabbits, when added to their diet. The aim of this study was to examine whether magnesium fortification of drinking water, without a change in diet content, can affect atherogenesis. The study included six groups of LDL-receptor-deficient mice. The mice received either distilled water or water containing 50 g of magnesium sulfate per liter. In the first (12 weeks) and second (6 weeks) stages of the experiment, the mice received low- and high-

Plasma ionized magnesium during acute hyperventilation in humans.

1. Respiratory alkalosis accompanies the clinical syndrome of tetany, precipitates cardiac arrhythmias and predisposes to coronary vasoconst … concentration and the intravascular magnesium mass. It is therefore conceivable that extracellular magnesium deficiency is at least a subsidiary cause of the syndrome of tetany and the cardiac complications that are precipitated by hyperventilation.

[Hypomagnesemia with magnesium-dependent hypocalcemia and hypopotassemia in a case of alcoholic cirrhosis].

An account of the main causes of low blood magnesium and the predominant rôle of this ion in the organism is followed by the description of a case of encephalopathy due to magnesium deficiency in a chronic alcoholic with cirrhosis of the liver. This neuropsychological condition, together with its concomitant low blood calcium and potassium, rapidly regressed when magnesium sulphate was administered. Stress is laid on the desirability of giving attention to and preventing the onset of this electrolytic alteration in clinical practive.

Dietary potassium and magnesium supplementation in cyclosporine-induced hypertension and nephrotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced hypertension and nephrotoxicity are aggravated by high sodium intake. Accumulating evidence suggests that potassium and magnesium supplementation could protect against the detrimental effects of dietary salt. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis of whether concurrent supplementation with potassium and magnesium could protect against the development of CsA-induced hypertension and nephrotoxicity more effectively than supplementation with one mineral alone. METHODS: Eight-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) were divided into four gr

Enzymatic pattern of glucose metabolic pathways in pyruvate kinase-deficient erythrocytes.

It has been shown that in some cases of congenital non-spherocytic haemolytic anaemia (CNSHA) with pyruvate kinase deficiency, the primary defect may be related to diminished magnesium-stimulated ATPase activity, followed by elevation of the erythrocyte ATP level. ATP as the end product of glycolysis inhibits by negative feedback control the activities of key glycolytic enzymes involved in energy production, i.e. pyruvate kinase (PK) and phosphofructokinase (PFK). Erythrocyte-deficient PK, however, is insensitive to the stimulating effect of fructose 1,6-diphosphate (FDP), which is normally a

Diuretic-associated hypomagnesaemia.

Clinically suspected hypomagnesaemia was confirmed in 21 patients over 12 months; all patients had been exposed to either short-term vigorou … ement of all symptoms particularly in the case of refractory atrial fibrillation. Chronic low-grade magnesium deficiency from diuretic treatment is more common than published reports suggest. Older patients are at risk, particularly those who have excessive alcohol intake, a diet low in magnesium, or a soft water supply.

Asymptomatic chronic hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia in a child: Cell membrane disease.

An 8-year-old boy was followed for four years because of chronic hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia. THe clinical manifestations were episodic and characterized by spontaneous carpopedal spasm. There were no other signs of magnesium or potassium deficiency. Metabolic studies revealed that the urinary exceretion of magnesium and potassium was elevated in relation to the serum level, but appropriate for a normal boy of that age. No abnormality was detected in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and the renal functions were normal. Various therapeutic attempts (oral magnesium and/or potassium s
