Periconceptional and Gestational Exposure to Antibiotics and Childhood Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that maternal antibiotics exposure during pregnancy may increase the risk of childhood asthma, but the results were inconsistent. Furthermore, most studies did not examine periconception period as an exposure window. We aim to assess the associations between maternal exposure to specific antibiotics before and during pregnancy and the risk of asthma in early childhood. METHODS: Data from the Collaborative Perinatal Project were used. Maternal exposure to antibiotics before and during pregnancy was recorded at each prenatal visit. A total of 39,907 singleto…

Anesthetic practice and pregnancy. Controlled survey of male anaesthetists in the United Kingdom.

7949 male doctors in the U.K. were surveyed to determine whether there was a relation between operating-theatre work (exposure) and abnormalities in the obstetric history of their marriages. Paternal exposure did not appear to influence the overall abortion-rate or the frequency of major congenital abnormality and involuntary infertility. The frequency of minor congenital abnormality in the children of exposed fathers was 3.09% compared with 2.35% (non-exposed). Maternal exposure was associated with a 15.5% frequency of abortion. Matching of exposed and non-exposed pregnancies with respect to …

Distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in placental tissues of maternal and fetal origin in exposed Wistar rats and associations with thyroid hormone levels.

In utero exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) is linked to adverse pregnancy and fetal health outcomes, including altered thyroid hormone (TH) levels. Despite their phase-out, PBDEs are still commonly detected in newborn cord blood. While PBDEs can cross the placenta, few studies have separately assessed PBDEs or THs in the maternal and fetal placental tissues. Additionally, no studies have separately assessed THs in these tissues across mid- and late gestation, during the onset of fetal TH synthesis. To address these gaps, we conducted a study with Wistar rats and examined PBDE

Environmental Exposure and Risk of Childhood Leukemia: An Overview.

Childhood leukemia is the most common cancer diagnosed in children worldwide. However, only a few causes have been established so far, mainly some genetic syndromes and high doses of ionizing radiation. Major efforts have been undertaken to study the relationship between environmental factors and the risk of childhood leukemia, inspired by geographical variation in incidence rates. Some evidence has emerged for parental occupational exposures to pesticides, whereas there is less evidence for an association with postnatal pesticide exposure. Diagnostic radiation and radon exposure have been sug

Simultaneous analysis of bisphenol A fractions in maternal and fetal compartments in early second trimester of pregnancy.

Background Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogenic, endocrine-disrupting compound widely used in the industry. It is also a ubiquitous environmental pollutant. Its presence was confirmed in human fetuses, which results from maternal exposure during pregnancy. The mechanisms behind maternal-fetal transfer, and relationships between pregnant women and fetal exposures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of maternal exposure to BPA on the exposure of the fetus. Methods Maternal plasma and amniotic fluid samples were collected from 52 pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis fo…

Rate of Chiari I malformation in children of mothers with depression with and without prenatal SSRI exposure.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are frequently prescribed to pregnant women. Therefore, research on in utero exposure to SSRIs can be helpful in informing patients and clinicians. The aim of this retrospective two-cohort study was to determine whether there is a statistically significant increase in Chiari I malformations (CIM) in children exposed to SSRIs during pregnancy. A total of 33 children whose mothers received a diagnosis of depression and took SSRIs during pregnancy (SSRI-exposed cohort) were matched to 66 children with no history of maternal depression and no SSRI ex

Molecular mechanisms of environmental toxin cadmium at the feto-maternal interface investigated using an organ-on-chip (FMi-OOC) model.

Human labor is associated with feto-maternal-derived signals that coordinate to initiate delivery. Exposure to environmental chemicals can prematurely trigger labor-initiating signals at the feto-maternal interface (FMi: decidua, amniochorion), leading to spontaneous preterm birth (PTB). Testing the association between environmental chemical exposure and PTB is difficult due to many limitations in vivo or in vitro. Physiological organ-on-chips (OOCs) are potential alternatives for studying mechanisms leading to PTB. The presented study tested the effect of maternal exposure to cadmium (Cd), an…

Intergenerational transmission of maternal care deficiency and offspring development delay induced by perinatal protein malnutrition.

Objectives: Early life represents a sensitive and critical period for an individual. Nutrition plays a crucial role in the maturation and functional development of the central nervous system. Inadequate nutrition before birth and during the postnatal life can seriously interfere with brain development and lead to behavioral and neurological disorders such as learning disabilities and psychiatric diseases. In addition, the quality of mother-infant interactions represents an important adaptive pathway that prepares offspring for the conditions of life. In this work, we asked if protein malnutrit

Manganese exposure and perinatal health: a systematic review of literature.

Manganese is essential for adequate feto-maternal health; however, an inverted U-shaped relation has been found between maternal manganese status and pregnancy complications. This systematic review summarizes the effect of maternal manganese exposure and perinatal health. We adopted a systematic approach to retrieve the recent literature. After applying the inclusion/exclusion criterion, a total of 20 studies were included in this review. Results found a non-significant relationship between maternal manganese exposure and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), while only three studies re

Metal mixture exposure and elevated risk of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy: Insights from a case-control study in northwestern China.

Exposure to metal mixtures has been associated with increased hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) risk, but evidence in northwestern China concerning the impact of environmental metals exposure on HDP risk remains limited. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between multi-metal exposure and HDP among pregnant women in northwestern China. We conducted a case-control study from January 2023 to May 2024 involving 94 pregnant women with newly diagnosed HDP and 188 controls. Plasma concentrations of 23 metals were measured. Single-metal models and multiple metal mixture model

A meta-analysis based on epidemiological studies to identify the key environmental pollutants inducing gestational diabetes mellitus.

Exposure to environmental pollutants intricately contributes to the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), thus it is imperative to identify the key contaminants which may induce GDM risk in humans. Herein, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on a total of 112 epidemiological studies to clarify the environmental risk factors for GDM occurrence. A total of 10 air pollutants, 26 metal elements, and 8 categories of organic compounds were examined. Fixed- and random-effect models were used to calculate the pooled odds ratio and 95 % confidence interval for evaluating the

Interaction of prenatal maternal selenium and manganese levels on child neurodevelopmental trajectories-the Shanghai birth cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The fetal brain is particularly plastic, and may be concurrently affected by chemical exposure and malnutritional factors. Selenium is essential for the developing brain, and excess manganese exposure may exert neurotoxic effects. However, few epidemiological studies have evaluated the interaction of manganese and selenium assessed in different prenatal stages on postnatal neurodevelopmental trajectories. METHODS: This study contained 1024 mother-child pairs in the Shanghai-birth-cohort study from 2013 to 2016 recruited since early/before pregnancy with complete data on manganese a

Associations of multiple metals exposure with immunoglobulin levels in pregnant women: Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study.

Metal may affect maternal immune function, but few epidemiological studies have reported the associations between multiple-metal exposure and maternal immunoglobulin (Ig) levels. Based on the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study, 1059 participants were included, and eleven metals in whole blood samples and serum IgA, IgG, IgE and IgM levels were measured. Linear regression, quantile-based g-computation (QGC), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to evaluate the associations. Compared with the first tertile of metal levels, arsenic (As) was negatively associated with IgE (β = -
