Ivermectin in human medicine.

Ivermectin is a potent macro-cyclic lactone causing paralysis in many nematodes and arthropods through an influx of chloride ions across cell membranes. It is currently the drug of choice for human onchocerciasis and shows potent microfilaricidal activity against the other major filarial parasites of human (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, Loa loa and Mansonella ozzardi) but not against M. perstans. Whether or not it also kills the adult-stage of these parasites is currently under study. Ivermectin also has excellent efficacy in both human strongyloidiasis and cutaneous larva migrans for w

Ungual scabies mimicking periungual verruca in a patient with metastatic breast cancer treated with abemaciclib: a case report.

Ungual scabies is a rare manifestation of Sarcoptes scabiei infestation in nail units and may mimic other nail diseases, resulting in diagnostic delay. Herein, we report the case of a 58-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer who received abemaciclib and presented with recalcitrant paronychia and verruca-like periungual hyperkeratosis, sparing the finger web area without pruritus. Skin biopsy confirmed multiple mites in the stratum corneum, resulting in the diagnosis of crusted scabies with nail involvement. Topical permethrin 5% cream and oral ivermectin were then administered. The prol

Scabies as a Neglected Tropical Disease: A Comprehensive Review of Pathogenesis, Epidemiology, Clinical Manifestations, Diagnosis and Treatment.

Scabies is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by the ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, affecting over 200 million individuals worldwide at any given time. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized this infection as a neglected tropical disease (NTD) since 2017. Scabies mainly affects underdeveloped, overcrowded, and resource-limited communities, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. Intense pruritus that gets worse at night and a distinctive rash with papules, burrows, and secondary bacterial infections from scratching are the clinical manifestation

The efficacy of permethrin 5% vs. oral ivermectin for the treatment of scabies.

Human scabies is caused by an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis). The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of permethrin 5% lotion with oral ivermectin for the treatment of scabies. In total, 60 patients with scabies were enrolled, and randomized into two groups: The first group and their family contacts received 5% permethrin cream twice with a one week interval, and the other received a single dose of oral ivermectin. Treatment was evaluated at intervals of 2 and 4 weeks. A single dose of ivermectin provided a cure rate of 62.4%

Systemic modulation of toll-like receptors, cytokine polarization and inflammasome signaling in dogs with generalized demodicosis.

Generalized canine demodicosis caused by Demodex canis is a chronic parasitic dermatosis associated with immune dysregulation; however, the integrated molecular mechanisms underlying host-parasite interaction remain incompletely characterized. The present study investigated systemic innate and adaptive immune gene expression in dogs with generalized demodicosis compared with healthy controls using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from 18 dogs with generalized demodicosis and six clinically healthy dogs. Relative mRNA expression of T

The Effect of a Preparation Derived From Fish Skin on the Change in the Fatty Acid Composition of Sebum in Individuals With Demodicosis.

Fatty acid (FA) metabolism is associated with Demodicosis, an increasingly common skin condition frequently observed in adolescents and adults, but it is not yet well defined whether the distribution or location of FAs in facial sebum differs according to the disease. In a study with a group of 50 patients diagnosed with Demodicosis and 40 control subjects, sebum samples were collected from the forehead, cheeks, and chin areas using Sebutape patches. Total FAs were analyzed using gas chromatography. The patients with Demodex were divided into two groups. Twenty-five individuals used only the p

Notoedres cati-induced bilateral erythemato-ceruminous otitis externa in a cat.

Notoedric mange, caused by Notoedres cati (N. cati), is a rare but severe parasitic skin disease primarily affecting stray cats, with zoonotic potential. This case report describes a one-year-old intact male European Shorthair presented with extensive cervico-facial skin lesions and systemic illness signs. Clinical examination revealed severe pruritus, alopecia, thick crusts, bilateral erythemato-ceruminous otitis externa and deep pyoderma, with the maximum severity score on the clinical mange scale. Complementary tests confirmed N. cati infestation through skin scrapings and ear wax examinati

Otodectes cynotis (Acari: Psoroptidae): examination of survival off-the-host under natural and laboratory conditions.

The biological and environmental factors affecting survival off-the-host of Otodectes cynotis (Acari: Psoroptidae) ear mites were investigated under natural and laboratory conditions. From November 2000 to November 2002 mites were collected monthly from cats and divided into four groups according to sex and stage. In laboratory conditions, the mites were placed in an incubator with a steady 95% relative humidity (r.h.), a 10 degrees C. All the plates were examined by stereomicroscopy every 24 h until all the mites had died. The data were analysed statistically by multiple linear regression and

[Structure and seasonal dynamics of the biotic community ectoparasites of the bank vole in the Il'men'-Volkhov lowland].

A biodiversity, seasonal dynamics and parasite load of a single individual and local population of the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) were studied in coniferous and mixed forests of the Ilmen-Volkhov lowland (neighborhood of Oskuy village, Chudovo region, Novgorod Province) in the period from June 1999 till May 2002. The Gero's traps were used for collecting the host. Lines of traps stood in each place during 3-5 days and were checked twice a day. Trapping of micromammalian hosts and collecting of parasites took place each month, except a few gaps. Total number of collected animals 2854 i

[Cheyletiella dermatitis: an uncommon cause of vesiculobullous eruption].

BACKGROUND: Species of Cheyletiella mites are parasites hosted by dogs, cats and rabbits. In humans, they cause a dermatosis not well known by dermatologists. We report a case of an unusual, purely vesiculobullous eruption due to Cheyletiella blakei acquired from an infected cat. CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old woman presented a very pruritic eruption of vesicles and bullous lesions located on the trunk and external areas of the arms. Biopsy showed dermoepidermal cleavage and polynuclear infiltrate with prominent eosinophils, consistent with the diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid. We suspected a Chey

Treatment of rosacea-like demodicidosis with oral ivermectin and topical permethrin cream.

A 32-year-old man presented with a chronic rosacea-like dermatitis of the facial skin and the eyelids. The skin disorder had been present for 4 years and was unresponsive to multiple previous treatment attempts. Skin scrapings and a histologic examination of a biopsy specimen from the affected area revealed the presence of numerous Demodex mites. The patient was treated with oral ivermectin and subsequent topical permethrin resulting in complete and rapid clearing of the folliculitis. We believe that this case supports the view that Demodex mites may be pathogenic when they are present in larg

Interaction of virulent and attenuated tick-borne encephalitis virus strains in ticks and a tick cell line.

An interference between a thermosensitive (ts) mutant and the wild-type (wt) of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in Ixodes ricinus L. and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus (Neumann) ticks is reported. I. ricinus females were dually infected by a parenteral inoculation of ts and wt strains at 10-day interval. Interference was demonstrated by the lowered ability of wt virus to replicate in ticks previously infected by ts virus. The wt virus was demonstrated in only 30% of the ticks; the average virus titre was lowered by 2.1 log10 compared with the control group, which was infected with the wt vir

Canine immune complex diseases.

Though not conclusive, our primary findings indicate that a feature common to many of our tumor and ICD patients is depressed cortisol production. Additionally, the response to ACTH adrenal cortex stimulation tests, at 2-hour intervals between rest and stimulation, have ranged from negative to substantially less than would be expected in normal subjects. Peripheral plasma cortisol values for dogs, at rest and 2 hours after ACTH stimulation, respectively, have been reported as 2-10 and 25-30 mug/dl, 3-8 and 7.5-18 mug/dl, and 1-12.5 and 9.5-22 mug/dl. Arthropod bites.

The phylum Arthropoda includes arachnids and insects. Although their bites typically cause only local reactions, some species are venomous or transmit disease. The two medically important spiders in the United States are widow spiders (Latrodectus), the bite of which causes intense muscle spasms, and the brown recluse (Loxosceles), which may cause skin necrosis. Widow bites usually respond to narcotics, benzodiazepines, or, when necessary, antivenom. Most recluse bites resolve uneventfully without aggressive therapy and require only wound care and minor debridement. Tick bites can transmit dis
