INTRODUCTION: the validity of the upper limb neurodynamic tests and especially the upper limb neurodynamic test 1 for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome has been the subject of several previous studies. However, the upper limb neurodynamic test 2A, which is also a test designated to assess the mechanosensitivity of the median nerve, has not been sufficiently studied, particularly for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: we used the upper limb neurodynamic test 2A as the index test and nerve conduction studies as the reference standard. We considered the upper limb neurodynamic tes

OBJECTIVE: To assess the point prevalence of peripheral neuropathy (PN) in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and to determine their predictors.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, children aged 8-18 y with T1DM on insulin therapy for > 2 y and free from acute complications were enrolled. All participants were evaluated for symptoms of PN with diabetic neuropathy symptom (DNS) score and underwent a detailed neurological examination. Assessment of nerve dysfunction was done using nerve conduction studies (NCS). The disease-related factors that increase the risk of PN were determ

AIMS: A subset of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is characterized by the presence of anti-neurofascin 155 (anti-NF155) autoantibodies. In this paper, we investigated an anti-NF155 CIDP patient via clinical, electrophysiological, and neuropathological tests.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patient was a 15-year-old Chinese boy affected by distal limb weakness and tremor for a 6-month period. The patient was positive for serum anti-NF155 antibodies, high cerebrospinal fluid protein levels and symmetric hypertrophy of lumbosacral roots in MRI. Elongation of distal an

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Optimal timing of nerve transfer surgery in cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) depends upon the integrity of lower motor neurons (LMNs) in recipient nerves, which is best predicted by compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude. There are no established techniques for obtaining the CMAP in two recipient muscles: triceps brachii and extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL). This study aimed to develop recording techniques for radial motor studies to triceps and ECRL, and to determine reference values for CMAP amplitudes in healthy volunteers.
METHODS: This was a prospectiv

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy (HNPP) often manifests via peripheral nerve entrapment including median nerve compression at the carpal tunnel. However, there are few reports on surgical interventions for focal compression of the median nerve at the wrist in patients with HNPP. We report a case of a patient with HNPP who improved clinically, electrophysiologically, and ultrasonographically after carpal tunnel release (CTR). A 56-year-old woman presented with an 18-month history of pain in both thumbs. Nerve conduction study (NCS) revealed bilateral median neuropathy at t

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence, clinical features, electrophysiological features and severity of peripheral neuropathy in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.
METHODS: Between May 2015 and December 2016, 200 CKD patients and 25 controls were assessed prospectively.
RESULTS: Prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in CKD patients was 50% based on clinical symptoms and 89% based on electrophysiological studies. Mean age of 200 CKD patients was 54.1 ± 11.9 years. 135 (67.5%) were male and 65 (32.5%) were female. Mean duration of disease was 4.2 ± 3.7 years. Positive sensory, negative sensory

UNLABELLED: We investigated the possible association between median nerve morphology and carpal tunnel size, hand side and nerve conduction measurements. The study included a patient group (n = 58; 44 women) with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in 100 hands and a control group of healthy volunteers (n = 56, 112 hands; 44 women). The following data were recorded: (1) median and ulnar motor and sensory nerve conduction parameters (2) ultrasonographic dimensions of the carpal tunnel inlet area (CTAin) and inlet area of the median nerve. The prevalence of bifid median nerve was 19% in the

We herein report a woman with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in whom positivity for anti-neurofascin 155 antibodies was revealed 23 years after the onset of neuropathy. The patient initially reported numbness in the face at 50 years of age and subsequently manifested features compatible to typical CIDP. Steroid administration initiated at 54 years of age ameliorated her neuropathic symptoms. Although the nerve conduction indices at 59 years of age deteriorated, those at 68, 72, and 73 years of age showed a gradual recovery. The deterioration and subsequent restoration

KEY POINTS: We have developed an improved method that enables simultaneous recording of stimulus evoked compound action potentials from large myelinated A fibres and small unmyelinated C fibres in mouse sciatic nerves. Investigations into the ability of fructose to support conduction in sciatic nerve revealed a novel glia-to-axon metabolic pathway in which fructose is converted in Schwann cells to lactate for subsequent shuttling to A fibres. The C fibres most likely directly take up and metabolise fructose. These differences are indicative of fibre sub-type specific metabolic profiles. These

OBJECTIVES: To assess the usefulness of serial electrophysiology in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in a multicenter setting and the reasons for change in electrodiagnostic subtypes with serial studies.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed serial electrophysiology of 51 patients with GBS from 4 European centres. Proportions of subtypes were determined at each timing. Individual case analyses were also performed where diagnostic changes occurred with either criteria, to ascertain if changes were due to disease progression or criteria inadequacy.
RESULTS: At first study, comparing old vs new cri

INTRODUCTION: Myelopathy is considered the most common neurological complication of copper deficiency. Concurrent peripheral neuropathy has been recognised in association with copper deficiency but has not been well characterised.
OBJECTIVES: To characterise the clinical, physiological and pathological features of copper-deficient peripheral neuropathy.
METHODS: Patients with simultaneous copper deficiency (<0.78 μg/mL) and peripheral neuropathy seen at the Mayo Clinic from 1985 to 2005 were identified.
RESULTS: 34 patients were identified (median age 55 years, range 36-78) including 24 wom

AIM: To determine the association between interleukin-6 (IL-6) and soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) levels with the electrodiagnostic abnormalities in patients with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).
METHODS: Serum HbA1c, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), fibrinogen, IL-6 and sE-selectin levels were analyzed in 25 IFG patients, 22 IGT patients and 41 controls. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) of sural, dorsal sural (DS), medial dorsal cutaneous and medial plantar sensory nerves were conducted.
RESULTS: HbA1c and IL-6 levels were s

This study aimed to determine the most suitable site for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by examining an 8-site measurement of the median nerve's cross-sectional area (CSA). A total of 36 wrists of 26 patients with nerve conduction study (NCS) proven CTS, along with 34 wrists of 23 controls whose age and gender were matched with the patients, were evaluated with ultrasonography. The CSAs of the median nerve at eight predetermined sites including at the sites of 3, 2, and 1 cm proximal to the wrist crease, wrist crease, as well as at the sites of 1, 2, 3. and 4 cm distal to the wrist
