Decision-making and treatment planning for older adults with pre-existing cognitive impairment and cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review aims to synthesize the current evidence on decision-making and cancer treatment planning for older adults with pre-existing cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and other related dementias. RECENT FINDINGS: Current decision-making practices are not standardized, and evidence suggests that oncology physicians conduct burden-benefit analyses to guide treatment planning. There was a consensus on the importance of involving caregivers into the decision-making process. However, caregivers experience feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and extra burden when decidin

[Nursing experience in the treatment of toxic encephalopathy caused by acute mercury poisoning].

Mercury possesses high toxicity and metal-dissolving properties, enabling it to form amalgam alloys with precious metals such as gold, silver, tin, and lead. The purification of target metals can be achieved through the volatilization process of heated amalgam. This report presents a case of toxic encephalopathy caused by acute mercury poisoning. The Department of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, affiliated with Capital Medical University, admitted and successfully treated a clinical case of toxic encephalopathy resulting from acute exposure to metallic mercur

Hypercalcaemia caused by active pulmonary tuberculosis in an elderly person without fever or pulmonary symptoms.

Many diseases can cause hypercalcaemia, including primary hyperparathyroidism, cancer, drugs and granulomatous diseases. A nursing home resident aged 81 years was admitted because of altered mental status. The patient did not have fever, cough, sputum or night sweat. Hypercalcaemia was identified as a cause of the consciousness disturbance. Chest radiograph showed no acute process. Laboratory workups revealed elevated serum levels of 1,25-(OH)2 vitamin D3 and positive T-spot test. Microscopic examination of the suctioned sputum identified acid-fast bacilli, which was confirmed as Mycobactrium

How perceived social support mitigates occupational stress and enhances psychological well-being in nurses returning to work after childbirth.

BACKGROUND: The return to work from maternity leave is a time when the professional demands overlap with the new responsibilities of caring for children, which may result in psychological stress for nurses. Perceived social support can be a protective resource to buffer stress and promote adaptation. OBJECTIVE: To determine if perceived social support would moderate the relationship between occupational stress and psychological well-being for nurses who returned to work after childbirth. METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in ten health care facilities in Dakahlia Gov

Exploring trauma recovery in nurses: a text mining and thematic analysis based on Swanson's theory of caring.

BACKGROUND: In their personal lives and workplace, nurses are exposed to traumatic events, which heighten their risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder. However, targeted interventions to promote psychological recovery among nurses are limited. This study explored the emotional and psychological recovery processes of nurses who participated in an Internet-based Trauma Recovery Nursing Intervention (IBTRNI) based on Swanson's Theory of Caring. METHODS: This study conducted a secondary qualitative analysis of free-text responses collected from 102 nurses who completed IBTRNI, as part

Psychoeducational Burnout Intervention for Nurses: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses face high levels of stress and emotional exhaustion due to heavy workloads and demanding work environments. Prolonged exposure to these stressors predisposes nurses to burnout, which can adversely affect patient care. Addressing burnout among nurses requires a multifaceted approach, involving both personal and organizational strategies. While organizational strategies target systemic workplace issues, personal interventions are often favored for their ease of implementation, immediate benefits, and empowerment of health care workers through stress management and resilience-b

COVID-19 related negative emotions and emotional suppression are associated with greater risk perceptions among emergency nurses: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: As the COVID-19 pandemic began, frontline nurses experienced many emotions as they faced risks relevant to both patients (e.g., making errors resulting in patient harm) and themselves (e.g., becoming infected with COVID-19). Although emotions are often neglected in the patient safety literature, research in affective science suggests that emotions may significantly impact nurses' perceptions of risk, which can have downstream consequences. Further, the use of chronic emotion regulation strategies that are known to differ in adaptability and effectiveness (i.e., emotional suppressio

Latent profile analysis of knowledge, attitude and practice of hospital infection prevention and control among haemodialysis nurses in Sichuan, China: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis, as one of the main alternative treatment methods for end-stage renal disease, has received much attention in recent years. Due to the particularity of hemodialysis treatment, patients have a relatively high risk of infection during the treatment process. Hemodialysis nurses, who are the main executors of the treatment operations and have the most contact with patients, have a close relationship with the infection risk of patients. The level of their hospital infection prevention and control literacy is closely related to the infection risk of patients. OBJECTIVE: To
