Pathologic anatomy.

The typical case shows one or more thickened bands overlying the flexor tendons in the palm that connect with one another via the transverse palmar fascia. Vertical septae fix the bands securely to the underlying fascia and transverse metacarpal ligaments. These septae pass deep between the tendon and neurovascular tunnel. Bands running into the fingers represent thickening and fibrosis of the natatory ligaments. Typically, a central band continues into the finger, forks, and dissipates just distal to the PIP joint. This dissipation occurs with bifurcation of the central band into two thickene

Pathological jealousy.

The behavioural enactment in pathological jealousy is a substitute for and defence against full, loving and sexual, intimacy with a single, live person. It is a masturbatory equivalent, sometimes a masturbatory prelude, a perverse form of sexual relatedness. The cast of characters includes at least four roles: male and female sexual protagonists, an observer, and an audience witnessing the interaction between the three. The need for concrete evidence relates to denial, mistrust, and guilt, especially about feared destructiveness, as well as masochistic and narcissistic enhancement. The object

Pathological gambling.

According to DSM-III criteria, pathological gambling is now recognised as a mental illness. Epidemiological data suggest that the incidence of this disorder in the general population varies from 0.5% to 1%. However, until recently, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists have tended to neglect the problem because of a lack of understanding of its aetiology and management. This paper describes pathological gambling and presents an overview of current psychiatric treatments. It concludes that behavioural interventions are the most effective treatments for compulsive gamblers.

Tau pathology in the brainstem monoaminergic neurons reflect resilience to Alzheimer's disease pathology in the Nun study cases.

The presence of amyloid and tau pathologies is the pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the presence of non-demented individuals with sufficient AD pathology indicates that AD-linked pathology does not always lead to dementia. The current view is that a non-demented (ND) individual with sufficient AD pathology represents an individual resilient to AD pathology. To gain insight about resilience to AD pathology, we examined the neuropathology in the brainstem monoaminergic (MAergic) neurons in the Nun Study participants with equally high Braak AD stage (V-VI) with dementia…

Antemortem basal forebrain atrophy in pure limbic TAR DNA-binding protein 43 pathology compared with pure Alzheimer pathology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Currently, the extent of cholinergic basal forebrain atrophy in relatively pure limbic TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) pathology compared with relatively pure Alzheimer disease (AD) is unclear. METHODS: We compared antemortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based atrophy of the basal forebrain and medial and lateral temporal lobe volumes between 10 autopsy cases with limbic TDP-43 pathology and 33 cases with AD pathology on postmortem neuropathologic examination from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohort. For reference, we studied MRI volumes from…

[Diagnosis of celiac disease and sprue. Recommendations of the German Society for Pathology Task Force on Gastroenterologic Pathology].

The diagnosis of celiac disease (CD) is based upon histological findings in duodenal or jejunal biopsy specimens. In recent years it has been seen that the development of CD lesion in the small bowel is a dynamic process which may present in various histological forms. At one end of the spectrum is a mucosa with normal architecture and an increase in intraepithelial lymphocytes; at the other end is the classical flat mucosa. Histological features supporting the diagnosis of CD are architectural changes of the villi and/or crypts, an increase in lamina propria cell density, and an increase in i

Pulmonary and Systemic Pathology in COVID-19—Holistic Pathological Analyses.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is the third worldwide coronavirus-associated disease outbreak in the past 20 years. Lung involvement, with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in severe cases, is the main clinical feature of this disease; the cardiovascular system, the central nervous system, and the gastrointestinal tract can also be affected. The pathophysiology of both pulmonary and extrapulmonary organ damage was almost completely unknown when the pandemic began. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications retrieved by a selective search concerning the structural chan

[Pathology of parathyroid glands: Practical aspects for routine pathological investigations].

The diagnostic histopathology of parathyroid glands comprises mostly benign diseases associated with primary, secondary and rarely tertiary hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroid adenoma and hyperplasia are the most common diagnoses, whereas parathyroid carcinomas and atypical adenomas are exceptional causes of hyperparathyroidism, the latter being purely a diagnosis by exclusion. This article deals with the major histopathological criteria of the various diagnoses with special emphasis on the clinical manifestation.

Beyond acute appendicitis: imaging and pathologic spectrum of appendiceal pathology.

While acute appendicitis is a common and important clinical problem, a variety of other disease processes can affect the appendix. Simple and perforated appendicitis, tip appendicitis, and stump appendicitis share a common clinical presentation including anorexia, right lower quadrant pain, and fever. By imaging, most cases of acute appendicitis exhibit luminal dilation, wall thickening, and periappendiceal inflammatory stranding. In tip appendicitis, these changes are isolated to the distal appendix, often with an obstructing appendicolith. Perforated appendicitis can exhibit mural discontinu

The Nun Study: risk factors for pathology and clinical-pathologic correlations.

The Nun Study was the first cohort study to enroll and follow a large, well-defined population that included demented and non-demented participants, all of whom agreed to donate their brains for research. The inclusion of systematic neuropathologic analysis in this study has resulted in a greater understanding of the role of Alzheimer and vascular pathology in the expression of memory deficits and dementia and has provided data showing that biomarkers for the pathology may be evident many decades earlier in adult life. Findings related to neuropathology in this study have included the followin…
