We report two cases of Parkinson's disease in which visual hallucinations disappeared after cataract surgery. Patient 1 was a 72-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease, visual hallucinations and musical hallucinations. Patient 2 was a 77-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease and visual hallucinations. Both patients had severe bilateral cataracts. Though it was difficult to control their visual hallucinations with medication only, cataract surgery made them disappeared quickly. The visual hallucinations of Parkinson's disease are similar to those of Charles Bonnet syndrome. For example, both

Cavernous hemangiomas are one of the most common benign tumors of the orbit in adults. We report a case of a longstanding retrobulbar hemangioma that was removed successfully through a temporal transconjunctival approach combined with lateral canthotomy. A 45-year-old female patient, with a 15-year history of slowly progressive proptosis and decreased visual acuity of the left eye, had a corrected visual acuity of finger count at 50 cm OS, compared with 1.0 OD. Exophthalmometry by the Nagle's method measured 15 mm OD by 26 mm OS. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-encapsulated re

BACKGROUND: Bilateral simultaneous acute amaurosis as a primary manifestation of demyelinating disease is extremely rare.
PATIENT: The clinical course of a 24-year-old patient who initially presented with a bilateral complete loss of vision is demonstrated. Morphologically both optic discs appeared slightly blurred and prominent. Otherwise there were no anterior and posterior segment abnormalities. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed an increased number of cells and protein without oligoclonal bands. On MRI multiple white matter lesions were visible. Laboratory tests showed no spe

The 6 eyes of 6 patients operated on using keratoconic epikeratoplasty are evaluated, and the mean 11-month postoperative results are reported. Uncorrected visual acuities improved in 4 patients and were maintained in 1 patient. One patient revealed a decrease of uncorrected visual acuity in the postoperative 6th month. Two patients showed an improvement of over 2 Snellen lines. Two patients showed the same corrected visual acuity, and that of 2 patients decreased within the postoperative 6-months follow-up. There was a significant decrease of myopia in terms of spherical equivalent. As a resu

A patient with refractory acute myelogenous leukemia was treated with high-dose cytosine arabinoside (3.0 g/m2 every 12 hours). Following ten doses over five days the patient developed excessive tearing, photophobia, burning ocular pain, and blurred vision. Ophthalmologic examination revealed conjunctival injection, central punctate corneal opacities with subepithelial granular deposits, and decreased visual acuity. Symptoms gradually resolved over the following four days; however, impaired visual acuity persisted for two weeks and corneal opacification did not disappear until four weeks follo

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA) is a genetically heterogenous disease. However, a large proportion of this disease is accounted for by mutations in OPA1. The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate disease progression in Australian ADOA patients with confirmed OPA1 mutations.
METHODS: Probands with characteristic clinical findings of ADOA were screened for OPA1 mutations, and relatives of identified mutation carriers were invited to participate. Disease progression was determined by sequential examination or using historical records over a mean of 9.6 (range

Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) may be required for visual rehabilitation or tectonic purposes in patients with severe keratopathy due to atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC). The outcome of PK is often poor in such patients because of adnexal and ocular surface abnormalities. We studied nine AKC patients requiring PK and evaluated the visual outcome and prognostic factors in 11 eyes. The mean follow-up was 87.2 months (range, 30-180 months). Preoperatively all patients had visual acuity of hand motion to 20/200. Eighteen grafts were performed. Final visual acuity was 20/40 or better in 46% of the

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to assess whether eye dominance may change after cataract surgery.
METHODS: This is a prospective case series. Cataract surgery candidates were examined prior to surgery for best-corrected visual acuity, eye dominance, and handedness. Patients with ocular conditions that may affect visual acuity were excluded from the study. A month following surgery, best-corrected visual acuity and eye dominance examinations were repeated.
RESULTS: The study included 33 patients with a mean age of 70.5±9.4 years. Eighteen patients (54.5%) had right eye dominance. Following

We present here the case of a 24-year-old male who experienced progressive keratoconus and vision loss which adversely affected his ability to carry out everyday tasks. This landed him in the Hashmanis Hospital for consultation. He had a preoperative best corrected visual acuity of 6/12. He underwent multiple Oculus Pentacam examinations, which showed progressive keratoconus. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) was performed to stabilize his cornea and, subsequently, an Artiflex anterior chamber iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (ACIF-PIOL) was implanted to alleviate his refractive errors.

We report a case of a 16 year-old healthy male, who experienced loss of vision in the right eye immediately after getting punched by a fist. His visual acuity improved to 20/20 within hours, and the optic nerve head appeared normal. CT scan of the orbits showed fractures of the right inferior orbital wall and lamina papyracea. The morning after the injury, he awoke with right eye vision decline to count fingers. There was pallid optic nerve swelling. MRI scan of the orbits showed right medial rectus enlargement and no optic canal abnormalities. The patient was treated with IV methylprednisolon

A 55-year-old woman presented with headache, dizziness, and decreased visual acuity. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a sellar mass with sphenoid sinus extension. The result of hormone showed an obviously high prolactin (815 ng/mL). The mass was resected and diagnosed with aspergillosis pathologically. Postoperatively, the level of prolactin dramatically decreased, and the patient received medical treatment with voriconazole and caspofungin. During a 6-month follow-up, the patient's headache and dizziness disappeared, and visual acuity improved. Therefore, aspergillus sellar abscess could r

A rare case of paramacular angioma with tractional macular detachment that was managed successfully with laser, followed by surgical intervention with good visual outcome, is presented. A 23-year-old female patient with paramacular Von Hippel angioma was treated with argon laser photocoagulation. Three-months following photocoagulation, vitrectomy with epiretinal tractional membrane removal was attempted successfully. Visual acuity improved from a preoperative level of 20/200 to 20/50 at the 6 months postoperative period. No recurrence of epiretinal membrane or exudation was observed during th

A 45-year-old man was struck in the left eye by the edge of a paper shopping bag 3 weeks after having laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). The injury resulted in partial displacement of the LASIK flap. The patient developed diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK) the day after the flap was repositioned. By day 4, visual acuity diminished to 20/60. By day 9, the clinical evidence of the DLK had resolved, and by day 15, uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20. Eye trauma 3 weeks after LASIK can result in displacement of the LASIK flap, and DLK can develop following flap replacement. Long-term anatomic and

This case involves a 25-year-old patient who suffered from corneal ulceration several days after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). A central scar developed, resulting in discomfort and reduction in visual acuity. Four months later, the scar was treated by phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) (25 microns depth, 5 mm ablation zone). Some scar tissue was left, but it cleared slowly and steadily over the next few years. The induced hyperopia decreased from 5.00 to 1.37 diopters spherical equivalent within 28 months postoperatively. Best corrected visual acuity increased from 20/60 preoperatively to

Capillary haemangiomas occurring on or adjacent to the optic disc pose unique therapeutic problems. Their natural history is highly variable, but has a propensity to lead to the development of progressive exudate with marked deterioration in visual acuity, often culminating in retinal detachment and vitreal haemorrhages. On reviewing the literature, no therapeutic modality has demonstrated an efficacy in treating the lesion and providing an acceptable visual acuity result. A case of a 61-year-old man with a left-sided juxtapapillary capillary haemangioma treated with verteporfin photodynamic t
