One hundred adults and 30 children completed questionnaires to investigate fear of dogs. Dog fearful adults asked to recall the origins of their fear reported classical conditioning experiences more frequently than vicarious acquisition or informational transmission. A group of hyperactive boys with attention deficit disorder (DSM-III) (n = 13) was compared to a group of normative, nonhyperactive boys (n = 16) with respect to Gottschalk-Gleser scores derived from 5-min speech samples they produced in response to standardized and purposely ambiguous instructions. The authors studied the incidence of parental loss among 163 gender-disordered patients and an equal number of psychiatric control patients. An unusually high number of gender-disordered patients had lost their fathers, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. Many of these patients showed shifts in gender identity in the year after loss, and during that period many requested surgical sex reassignment for the first time. Changes in the patient's relationship with the remaining parent and experiences related to loss of the father are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant risk factor for suicidal behavior and an important clinical marker of psychopathology. NSSI is especially common in adolescent girls. A number of psychosocial correlates of adolescent NSSI have been identified, including problems characterized by disinhibition and negative affectivity. However, it is unknown whether these characteristics prospectively predict first-onset NSSI, limiting our understanding of its etiology and prevention.
