[Repigmentation in vitiligo universalis triggered by hemodialysis].

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmenting disorder. Vitiligo universalis is a rare form responsible for significant aesthetic damage. To date, the exact pathogenesis remains unknown. Its treatment, a real challenge, consists rather in removing the still pigmented areas. We report a case of a patient followed for stable vitiligo universalis from an early age who presented with repigmentation shortly after initiation of hemodialysis.

[The Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and intestinal invagination].

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hamartomatous polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract and mucocutaneous melanin pigmentation. This condition can occur and cause symptoms at any age, but intestinal obstruction due to intussusception is a frequent complication. Two cases of this syndrome associated to intussusception are reported. Both patients were girls, 2 and 8 years old respectively and underwent surgical treatment.

Congenital erythropoietic porphyria--oral manifestations and dental treatment in childhood: a case report.

Congenital erythropoietic porphyria is a rare condition resulting from an inborn error in prophyrin metabolism. This deficiency leads to hemolytic anemia, photosensitivity, blistering of the skin, and deposition of red-brown pigments in the bones and teeth. The literature regarding the dental aspects of this disorder is briefly reviewed and the preventive, restorative, and esthetic dental management of a 4-year-old child with congenital erythropoietic porphyria is described.

Spontaneous Achilles tendon rupture as the initial presentation of ochronosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder characterized by homogentisic acid accumulation leading to ochronosis, which weakens connective tissues and may rarely affect tendons. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 43-year-old man presented with sudden right ankle pain and functional loss without preceding trauma. Examination revealed a palpable gap and pigmentation of the sclera and ear. Intraoperatively, the Achilles tendon was friable and black. Histopathology confirmed ochronotic degeneration. Surgical repair using a modified Krackow suture with intraosseous anch

Quantitative multi-contrast in vivo mouse imaging with polarization diversity optical coherence tomography and angiography.

Retinal microvasculature and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) play vital roles in maintaining the health and metabolic activity of the eye. Visualization of these retina structures is essential for pre-clinical studies of vision-robbing diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We have developed a quantitative multi-contrast polarization diversity OCT and angiography (QMC-PD-OCTA) system for imaging and visualizing pigment in the RPE using degree of polarization uniformity (DOPU), along with flow in the retinal capillaries using OCT angiography (OCTA). An adaptive DOPU aver

Lysosomal Trafficking Regulator (LYST).

Regulation of vesicle trafficking to lysosomes and lysosome-related organelles (LROs) as well as regulation of the size of these organelles are critical to maintain their functions. Disruption of the lysosomal trafficking regulator (LYST) results in Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by oculocutaneous albinism, prolonged bleeding, severe immunodeficiency, recurrent bacterial infection, neurologic dysfunction and hemophagocytic lympohistiocytosis (HLH). The classic diagnostic feature of the syndrome is enlarged LROs in all cell types, including lys

Pigmented purpuric dermatosis or mycosis fungoides: A diagnostic dilemma.

Pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD), a group of vascular disorders with variable clinical picture is reported in all races and age groups with a male predilection. There are reports of mycosis fungoides manifesting as pigmented purpura as well as progression of PPD to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. The diagnostic dilemma is compounded by PPD manifesting histological similarity to mycosis fungoides. Currently, it is believed that PPD with monoclonal T-cell population is more likely to progress to malignancy. We report a 31-year-old male patient who presented with the lichenoid clinical variant of P

[Uveitis, caused by Echo-11 virus].

Analysis of clinical manifestations of a total enteroviral infection with ECHO-11 virus-induced uveitis in 58 infants aged 2 weeks to 1.5 years has shown that uveitis develops on days 1-10 of the disease and is associated with a weak injection, endothelial edema, hyperemia and edema of the iris rapidly eventuating in destruction of the pigment lamina and fenestration. Posterior synechiae, pupil deformations, grave uveitis with hypotonia of 4-10 mm Hg are rapidly developing. A two-year follow-up has shown marked hemo- and hydrodynamic disorders, retarded growth of the involved eye, development

Controversies and conundrums in pachychoroid spectrum disorders: A structured diagnostic approach.

The term pachychoroid, derived from the Greek word pachy meaning "thick," refers to a choroidal phenotype characterized by increased choroidal thickness, dilated outer choroidal vessels (pachyvessels), and attenuation of the overlying Sattler layer and choriocapillaris. Initially recognized in central serous chorioretinopathy, this phenotype is now acknowledged as the underlying pathophysiological basis for a broader spectrum of retinal disorders, including pachychoroid pigment epitheliopathy, pachychoroid neovasculopathy, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, focal choroidal excavation, peripapi

[Remission of vitiligo during treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin: report of one case].

Vitiligo is associated with other autoimmune diseases. We report a 52-year-old male with a Sjögren syndrome that was treated with monthly pulses of intravenous immunoglobulin for a chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. The neurological disorder responded adequately to the treatment and the patient also noted a marked remission of his vitiligo with almost compete re-pigmentation of the scalp and face and partial repigmentation of other areas.

Therapeutic promise of carotenoids as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents in neurodegenerative disorders.

Neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis have various disease-specific causal factors and pathological features. A very common characteristic of NDs is oxidative stress (OS), which takes place due to the elevated generation of reactive oxygen species during the progression of NDs. Furthermore, the pathological condition of NDs including an increased level of protein aggregates can further lead to chronic inflammation because of the microglial activation. Carotenoids (CTs) ar

Adeno-Associated Viral Gene Therapy for Inherited Retinal Disease.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a group of rare, heterogenous eye disorders caused by gene mutations that result in degeneration of the retina. There are currently limited treatment options for IRDs; however, retinal gene therapy holds great promise for the treatment of different forms of inherited blindness. One such IRD for which gene therapy has shown positive initial results is choroideremia, a rare, X-linked degenerative disorder of the retina and choroid. Mutation of the CHM gene leads to an absence of functional Rab escort protein 1 (REP1), which causes retinal pigment epithelium
