Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension: An Uncommon Cause of Postural Vestibulocochlear Symptoms.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension is an uncommon but increasingly recognized condition characterized by an orthostatic headache secondary to low cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Vestibulocochlear symptoms are common but rarely the only presenting feature and can be challenging to differentiate from Meniere's disease. We present a case series that highlights the common vestibulocochlear symptoms and a review of the literature to increase awareness amongst otolaryngologists and highlight the path to diagnosis and management of this condition.

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): An Update for Clinical Practice.

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a variant of autonomic cardiovascular disorder characterized by an excessive increase in heart rate upon standing associated with light-headedness, headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath, and brain fog. The etiology of POTS is largely unknown and often debilitating. The 3 major hypotheses about the pathophysiology of POTS are autoimmunity, abnormally increased sympathetic activity, and sympathetic denervation leading to central hypovolemia and reflex tachycardia. Given its heterogeneous nature, it is crucial to understand each component o

[The comorbid mechanism of vestibular migraine and persistent postural-perceptual dizziness].

Vestibular migraine and persistent postural-perceptual dizziness both involve the vestibular system and are similar in clinical manifestations. After acute attack of vestibular migraine, it can gradually evolve into persistent posture-perceptual dizziness; persistent posture-perceptual dizziness caused by various factors can be combined with symptoms similar to vestibular migraine. Studies have shown that abnormal multi-sensory signal integration, abnormal neurotransmitters and genetic factors may be the co-disease mechanism of the two.

Prognostic value of postural hypotension in hospitalized patients with heart failure.

Although postural hypotension (PH) is reportedly associated with mortality in the general population, the prognostic value for heart failure is unclear. This was a post-hoc analysis of FRAGILE-HF, a prospective multicenter observational study focusing on frailty in elderly patients with heart failure. Overall, 730 patients aged ≥ 65 years who were hospitalized with heart failure were enrolled. PH was defined by evaluating seated PH, and was defined as a fall of ≥ 20 mmHg in systolic and/or ≥ 10 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure within 3 min after transition from a supine to sitting position. Neurodynamic Functions and Their Correlations with Postural Parameters in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Knowledge about neurodynamic functions of the nervous system (NS) in patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is limited. This study aimed to assess the mechanosensitivity of the NS structures (MNS) in adolescents with IS. The study included 69 adolescents with IS and 57 healthy peers aged 10-15 years. The Upper Limb Neurodynamic Test 1 (ULNT1), straight leg raise (SLR) test, and slump test (SLUMP) were used to assess MNS. The spinal curvatures in the sagittal plane and selected ranges of motion were measured. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman's rank correlation.

Characterizing gaze and postural stability deficits in people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: People with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) experience a wide range of symptoms that can alter function and limit activity and community participation. Symptoms including sensory changes, weakness, fatigue and others have been well documented. However, symptoms related to changes in vestibular related function, including gaze and postural stability have not been fully explored. While some recent studies have begun to provide insight into these deficits in PwMS and have explored the use of rehabilitation paradigms for their management, much remains unknown about the full extent of these d

Postural Control and Functional Ankle Stability in Professional and Amateur Skateboarders.

Basic maneuvers in skateboarding, such as the ollie, put the player at high risk for ankle injuries because of the position of the feet required to perform the maneuvers. This study investigated ankle stability and reaction time for the tibialis anterior, fibularis longus, and fibularis brevis in professional and amateur skateboarders. In total, 16 professional and 16 amateur skateboarders were recruited as participants and underwent range of motion assessments, balance testing, and muscle reaction time measurements. The results revealed that professional skateboarders had a significantly smal

Transdermal auricular vagus stimulation for the treatment of postural tachycardia syndrome.

Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a chronic disorder characterized by symptoms of orthostatic intolerance such as fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, palpitations, dyspnea, chest discomfort and remarkable tachycardia upon standing. Non-invasive transdermal vagal stimulators have been applied for the treatment of epilepsy, anxiety, depression, headache, and chronic pain syndromes. Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating effects after transdermal vagal stimulation raised interest for applications in other diseases. Patients with sympathetic overactivity, reduced cardiac vagal drive and pre

The tightening parameters of the vibratory devices modify their disturbing postural effects.

The purpose was to specify the impact of two different forces exerted by vibratory devices on the Achilles tendon on postural balance. The postural balance of 13 participants was evaluated on a force platform in two 40 s bipedal stance conditions with closed eyes. Tendon vibrations (80 Hz) were triggered 10 s after the beginning of the postural evaluation and applied during 20 s. Two levels of the force exerted by the vibrators were calibrated using load cells to control the tightening parameters of the vibrators: a strong tightening (ST) condition at 45 N and a light tightening (LT) condition

Association between Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and Joint Hypermobility.

Joint hypermobility syndrome refers to increased joint flexibility beyond the normal range of motion. This syndrome has a benign form known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type 3. This is a disorder in which hypermobility is accompanied by clinical manifestations in the absence of any systemic disease. A clinical finding associated with this condition is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The following is a rare case of joint hypermobility syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The relevance of this case report lies in the impact that this disease had on the patient's qualit
