Postpartum psychiatric hospital admissions: A population-based study from British Columbia, Canada.

The risk of psychiatric hospitalization increases in the year postpartum, and rates have been rising. However, data describing these admissions is limited. In this retrospective, population-based study of all deliveries between 2015-2019 in British Columbia (BC), Canada, we linked BC perinatal data registry with other health services data, including all hospital admissions. Rates, characteristics, and risk factors for postpartum psychiatric hospital admissions were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression modeling. Following 189,530 deliveries, there were 812 postpartum ps

Serious maternal complications in relation to severe pre-eclampsia: a retrospective cohort study of the impact of hospital volume.

OBJECTIVE: We examined rates of serious maternal complications in relation to severe pre-eclampsia based on the delivering hospital's annualised volume. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. POPULATION AND SETTING: Singleton deliveries (n = 25 782 235) in 439 hospitals in the USA. METHODS: Annualised hospital volume was categorised as 25-500, 501-1000, 1001-2000 and >2000. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Rates of in-hospital maternal death and serious maternal complications, including puerperal cerebrovascular disorders, pulmonary oedema, disseminated intravascular coagulation, acute renal, heart and

[Psychoses in puerperium: symptoms, course and long-term prognosis].

86 women who suffered from a psychotic disorder for the first time in their life within 6 weeks after parturition, were investigated regarding sociodemographic and gynaecological parameters, time of onset and initial symptomatology, psychopathological symptoms during hospitalisation, treatment and short-term outcome of the illness. The majority of patients became ill after the first (75%), full-term normal (63%) delivery and within the first two postpartum weeks (78%). The most frequent initial symptoms were anxiety, restlessness, depressive mood, sleep disturbances, behaviour disturbances, ca

Maternal Mortality Among Black Women in Brazil: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality in Brazil remains a critical indicator of social and racial inequalities, reflecting structural failures in access to and quality of obstetric care. Black women, particularly those categorized as black or brown, are at a higher risk of dying during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period. This is the result of the intersection of institutional racism, poverty, and social vulnerabilities. This study aimed to analyze trends and associated factors of maternal mortality among black women in Brazil from 2000 to 2020. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort an

Impact of Blood Pressure Self-Management on Vascular Remodeling After Hypertensive Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive pregnancy disorders are associated with long-term adverse cardiac and vascular remodeling post index pregnancy. The POP-HT trial (Physician Optimised Postpartum Hypertension Treatment) demonstrated that improved puerperal blood pressure control leads to reduced blood pressure and beneficial cardiac remodeling during the first year postpartum. This study describes the impact on postpartum vascular remodeling. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded end point trial in a single UK hospital where 220 women were assigned 1:1 to intervention (self-management

Effect of types of placenta previa on maternal and neonatal outcomes: a 10-year retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Through this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different types of placenta previa (PP) on maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: This study was conducted in The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University and Tongji Hospital between January 2009 and 2019. PP was traditionally classified into four types, namely low-lying placenta, marginal, partial, and complete PP. Previous studies have classified PP into two types, namely low-lying placenta and PP. Based on our clinical experience, we proposed the classification of PP into three types, for the first time, wh

Establishment of an antepartum predictive scoring model to identify candidates for vaginal birth after cesarean.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based medicine has shown that successful vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is associated with fewer complications than an elective repeat cesarean. Although spontaneous vaginal births and reductions in cesarean delivery (CD) rates have been advocated, the risk factors for VBAC complications remain unclear and failed trials of labor (TOL) can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: To construct an antepartum predictive scoring model for VBAC. Retrospective analysis of charts from 1062 women who underwent TOL at no less than 28 gestational weeks with vertex singleton

[Bipolarity correlated factors in major depression: about 155 Tunisian inpatients].

The distinction between the depressive troubles according to their inclusion in bipolar disorders or in recurrent depressive disorders offers an evident practical interest. In fact, the curative and mainly the preventive treatment of these troubles are different. So it is necessary to identify the predictive factors of bipolar development in case of inaugural depressive episode. In 1983, Akiskal was the first who identified those factors: pharmacological hypomania, puerperal depression, onset at early age (<25 years), presence of psychotic characteristics, hypersomnia and psychomotor inhibitio

Postpartum Mental Health Disorders in Indigenous Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review synthesized and evaluated the evidence on the prevalence of postpartum mental health disorders in Indigenous women. METHODS: Comprehensive searches of biomedical electronic databases including Medline, EMBASE, PsychINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science were performed for peer-reviewed literature published from 1990 to September 2018. The search strategy included terms related to the postpartum period, mental health disorders, and Indigenous ancestry. Epidemiological observational studies that evaluated the prevalence of mental health disorders in the postpartum an

Prevention in high risk children of depressed parents.

Opportunities for prevention of psychopathology in children and families are often overlooked in the treatment of the depressed adult patient. Research and clinical findings are reviewed which highlight the impact on children and the family of depressed parents. They range from illness serious enough to require hospitalization to cases in which depression has not yet been diagnosed. These findings are used as guidelines for the development of preventive and therapeutic interventions for all family members.

Depressive symptom contagion in the transition to parenthood: Interparental processes and the role of partner-related attachment.

How depressive symptoms unfold within a couple during the perinatal events of pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood is poorly understood. In this prospective study, we aim to investigate the reciprocal relation between maternal and paternal depressive symptomatology, specifically how symptoms in 1 partner relate to subsequent symptom level changes in the other partner throughout the perinatal period. Further, we aim to identify parents who are particularly vulnerable to the development of disruptive processes of negative mood states. Data were collected from 1,036 mothers and 878 fathers

[Diagnostics and correction of coagulopathy in pregnant women and puerperas with gestosis].

INTRODUCTION. Gestosis is a complication of normal pregnancy which for long years takes the 2-3rd place in maternal and perinatal mortality and women morbidity structure. 396 patients with moderate and heavy gestosis from 2007 to 2011 were studied. In 53 women (13.4%) it was accompanied by complex haemostasis disturbances and part of women had sepsis. Therefore the retrospective differential analysis of haemostasis disturbances with algorithm presented in this article was carried out. Haemostasis status, complete blood count, biochemical blood analysis data were analyzed. Correction of haemost
