Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment decreases bladder pain in cyclophosphamide cystitis: a Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain (MAPP) Research Network animal model study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-neutralizing antibodies can reduce pain and voiding dysfunction in the cyclophosphamide (CYP) cystitis model of bladder pain in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult female mice received anti-VEGF-neutralizing antibodies (10 mg/kg i.p. B20-4.1.1 VEGF mAb) or saline (control) pre-treatment, followed by CYP (150 mg/kg i.p.) to induce acute cystitis. Pelvic nociceptive responses were assessed by applying von Frey filaments to the pelvic area. Spontaneous micturition was assessed using the void spot assay

Atypically presented flank pain in a patient with pulmonary embolism; a case report and literature review of a diagnostic dilemma.

RATIONALE: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially life-threatening condition with a broad spectrum of clinical presentations, making diagn … esentation. Proposed mechanisms include diaphragmatic pleural irritation, pulmonary infarction, and referred pain through shared thoracic sensory pathways. This case highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for PE in patients presenting with unexplained atypical pain, particularly when risk factors are present. Case report: Favorable outcomes of spinal cord stimulation in complex regional pain syndrome Type II consistent with thermography findings.

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain disorder that develops as a consequence of trauma to one or more limbs. Despite the availability of multiple modalities to diagnose CRPS, a gold standard technique for definitive diagnosis is lacking. Moreover, there are limited reports describing the use of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to treat CRPS Type II, given the low prevalence of this condition. Herein, we present the case of a patient with CRPS Type II with novel thermography findings who underwent SCS for pain management after an Achilles tendon repair surgery. CASE

Sacral epiduroscopic laser decompression for complex regional pain syndrome after lumbar spinal surgery: A case report.

RATIONALE: CRPS after a lumbar surgery has symptoms that are similar to PSSS. However, standard criteria for distinguishing CRPS from PSSS do not exist. We present a case report of a 31-year-old female with CRPS symptoms after lumbar spinal surgery treated by performing SELD. PATIENT CONCERNS: This patient was referred to our pain clinic for left ankle pain. She received a lumbar discectomy for a herniated lumbar disc (L5/S1) but the pain was aggravated after surgery. DIAGNOSES: The characteristics of the pain were burning, tingling, and cold, and were accompanied by other symptoms such as s

The analgesic effect of photobiomodulation therapy (830 nm) on the masticatory muscles: a randomized, double-blind study.

This study assesses the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (830 nm) for myalgia treatment of masticatory muscles. Sixty patients with muscular myalgia were selected and randomly allocated into 2 groups (n=30): Group A comprised patients given a placebo (control), and Group B consisted of those undergoing photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). PBMT and placebo were applied bilaterally to specific points on the masseter and temporal muscles. Referred pain elicited by palpation and maximum mouth opening were measured before (EV1) and after (EV2) the treatments. The data were analyzed using statis…

[Facial and eye pain - Neurological differential diagnosis].

Head and facial pain are common in neurological practice and the pain often arises in the orbit or is referred into the eye. This is due to the autonomic innervation of the eye and orbit. There are acute and chronic pain syndromes. This review gives an overview of the differential diagnosis and treatment. Idiopathic headache syndromes, such as migraine and cluster headache are the most frequent and are often debilitating conditions. Trigemino-autonomic cephalalgias (SUNCT and SUNA) have to be taken into account, as well as trigeminal neuralgia. Trigemino-autonomic headache after eye operations

Case report: successful epiradicular peripheral nerve stimulation of the C2 dorsal root ganglion for postherpetic neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication following an acute varicella zoster virus infection. PHN often results in a chronic severe pain condition refractory to conservative pain management treatments. Peripheral nerve stimulation over the affected spinal nerve root may be an effective treatment option for patients with intractable PHN. OBJECTIVE: To describe a successful case of peripheral nerve stimulation of the second cervical dorsal root ganglion for the treatment of intractable PHN. CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old man with a 15-month history of severe PHN wa

Neuropathy after herniorrhaphy: indication for surgical treatment and outcome.

BACKGROUND: Chronic neuropathy after hernia repair is a neglected problem as very few patients are referred for surgical treatment. The aim of the present study was to assess the outcome of standardized surgical revision for neuropathic pain after hernia repair. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study we evaluated all patients admitted to our tertiary referral center for surgical treatment of persistent neuropathic pain after primary herniorrhaphy between 2001 and 2006. Diagnosis of neuropathic pain was based on clinical findings and a positive Tinel's sign. Postoperative pain was evaluated by

Relationship between patient symptoms and endosonographic findings in chronic pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis (CP) relies on the presence of up to nine distinct pancreatic parenchymal and ductal abnormalities, without considering other factors such as age, duration of disease or clinical symptoms. Our goal was to examine the impact of patient symptoms on EUS findings in patients with CP. METHODS: All patients with previously suspected CP who had symptomatic disease referred to our medical center for pancreatic EUS were identified. Patients were stratified into two groups based on their clinical symptoms--pain only and

Palliative care in inflammatory bowel disease: an evidence-based approach.

The management of the patient with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is challenging for both the physician and the patient. IBD imposes both a physical and emotional burden on patients' lives. Palliative care is important for IBD patients because it focuses on improving quality of life. While palliative care does not change the natural history of the disease, it provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms. This article focuses on various aspects of care for IBD patients including pain control, management of oral and skin ulcerations, stomal problems in IBD patients, control of naus

A Rare Case of Recurrent Hematometra of Unknown Etiology.

An abnormal blood collection in the uterus is referred to as hematometra. Obstruction of the genitourinary outflow system caused by earlier surgeries or congenital defects is most frequently related to this rare disorder. The symptoms of hematometra include acute pelvic pain and a history of absent menarche. Here is a case of a 42-year-old female who presented with complaints of severe lower abdominal pain, and pain during urination that was accompanied by vulval itching in June 2021. She had undergone two Caesarean sections and a myomectomy in the past. She was given three monthly injections
