OBJECTIVES: To compare, intra-individually, the detection rates of sentinel node on lymphoscintigraphy performed on the day of injection (D0) and on the following day (D1) in breast carcinoma. We also compared 2-day and 1-day protocols in the two groups of patients.

Recent studies have shown that the sentinel lymph node (SLN) procedure might improve staging in colon cancer. However, low SLN identification and high false negative rates have also been reported. Although the radioisotope (RI) method is highly accurate, it requires nuclear medicine facilities and exposes patients to radiation. Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) tracers were shown to be noninferior to RI in trials outside Japan but are not approved in Japan. This eight-year retrospective cohort study of 285 patients with primary cutaneous malignant melanoma compared diagnostic pathways and oncological outcomes, demonstrating significantly lower mortality in patients diagnosed via teledermatology versus face-to-face appointments (5% vs. 23%; adjusted OR 8.1; p = 0.00009), despite comparable clinicopathological features. Sentinel lymph node biopsy positivity was independently associated with significantly higher odds of mortality (adjusted OR 13.9; p = 0.02), confirming its continued prognostic value in guiding adjuvant therapy selection.
