Combination of HRLC-MS with MPP and GNPS data analysis to identify major constituents of MtSK inhibitory Alpinia galanga extract.

Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd. (Zingiberaceae), or galangal, has been previously reported as active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) in vitro. The present study assessed a novel antitubercular mechanism of of galangal through M. tuberculosis shikimate kinase (MtSK) inhibitory assays. Sequential extractions of nonpolar solvents hexane and dichloromethane (DCM) were performed on galangal and screened in MtSK inhibitory assays to identify potential activity. Samples were then subjected to high resolution (HR) LC-MS chemical fingerprinting and analysis. Additionally, a novel approach was under

Social media provides support and education for pregnant people when healthcare does not.

INTRODUCTION: The use of social media for health-related reasons is growing, but there is a dearth of research on the mechanisms of support provided. Understanding how social media groups work could improve communications between providers and patients. Preeclampsia (PreE) is a hypertensive disease of pregnancy that has short- and long-term physical and psychosocial effects. The Preeclampsia, Eclampsia & HELLP Syndrome Survivors Global Support Network (PEHSS) Facebook group is an online, international, moderated support group that provides evidence-based information and community support. Networks of Adversity in Childhood and Adolescence and Their Relationship to Adult Mental Health.

Adverse experiences before the age of eighteen are common and include diverse events ranging from sexual abuse to parental divorce. These stressful experiences have been linked to physical and mental health issues. Previous research has focused mainly on childhood adversity, such as experiences in the family environment. Little consideration has been given to adversities that may be particularly harmful in adolescence. To understand adolescents' adverse experiences, this project used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, total N = 14,901, N ≈ 1,200 - 10,000 per

The association between parental risk behaviors during childhood and having high risk networks in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that both social networks and parent drug use influence individual drug use among adolescents and that peers continue to influence drug use among adults. This analysis aims to determine whether parent drug use during childhood is associated with having drug-using networks in adulthood after adjusting for individual adult drug use. METHODS: 650 young adult drug users were recruited through targeted street outreach and respondent-driven sampling in New York City (2006-2009). Baseline surveys ascertained demographics, network characteristics, drug use behavior

Challenges in HIV prevention and treatment among men who have sex with men in China: structural exclusion, healthcare inequity, and testing avoidance.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China face a high burden of HIV infection. While biomedical interventions are crucial, technology alone cannot explain the challenges of AIDS prevention and treatment in this group; deeper social structural factors need urgent attention. This study analyzes the ways that structural barriers, through the national policy system and structural stigma, affect the HIV prevention and treatment behaviors of MSM in China. We reviewed central-level academic and policy documents and analyzed the data using NVivo 12. We then integrated the research results from these do

The perceived impact of homelessness on health during pregnancy and the postpartum period: A qualitative study carried out in the metropolitan area of Nantes, France.

The number of homeless people has been constantly increasing in Europe over recent years, as well as the proportion of women among the homeless population. Pregnancy can increase the risk of becoming homeless and, on the other hand, homelessness has been widely connected to adverse perinatal outcomes. The objective of this study was to describe the overall perceived impact of homelessness on health during pregnancy and the postpartum period, using a qualitative research approach to prioritize women's perspective. One-time semi structured interviews were conducted with 10 pregnant women and 10

Is social support related to better mental health, treatment continuation and success rates among individuals undergoing in-vitro fertilization? Systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

Infertility and its treatment via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) represent a global health area of increasing importance. However, the physical and psychological burden of IVF can negatively impact psychological wellbeing, as well as treatment retention and success. Social support has been found to have positive health effects among populations facing health-related stressors worldwide, and its potential protective role for IVF patients merits further attention. We present a protocol for a systematic review of peer-reviewed published studies quantitatively investigating associations between soci

Abnormal spatiotemporal processing of emotional facial expressions in childhood autism: dipole source analysis of event-related potentials.

Previous studies of face processing in autism suggest abnormalities in anatomical development, functioning and connectivity/coordination of distributed brain systems involved in social cognition, but the spatial sequence and time course of rapid (sub-second) neural responses to emotional facial expressions have not been examined in detail. Source analysis of high-density event-related potentials (ERPs) is an optimal means to examine both the precise temporal profile and spatial location of early electrical brain activity in response to emotionally salient stimuli. Therefore, we recorded 128-ch

Learners' experience and perceived impact of a health literacy program in adult basic education: a qualitative study.

UNLABELLED: Objectives and importance of the study: Adult literacy programs aim to empower learners to participate more effectively in everyday life. This includes programs with health content embedded in curricula to target health literacy. Adult learners who attend these programs represent a heterogeneous population, but include a high proportion of hard-to-reach or socially disadvantaged groups in terms of age, ethnicity, educational background, language and prevalence of learning disabilities. In 2014, we conducted a cluster-randomised controlled trial of a health literacy program in adult

Race Adjusted for Social and Environmental Disparities Is the Principal Determinant of T2HIGH Inflammation in Children With Severe Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Robust T-helper 2 (T2) inflammation drives a phenotype noted for difficult symptoms in children with asthma. Past studies show that Black children have greater T2 inflammation than White children. However, it is not clear how disparate social and environmental factors inform this difference. OBJECTIVE: To examine the fundamental factors that differentiate T2HIGH and T2LOW inflammation phenotypes in children with severe, treatment-refractory asthma. METHODS: Children underwent bronchoscopy and measures of blood T2 markers. T2HIGH children (n = 202) had blood or lung lavage (bronch

Emotional regulation neural circuitry abnormalities in adult bipolar disorder: dissociating effects of long-term depression history from relationships with present symptoms.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is common and debilitating and confounding effects of depression history on neural activity in BD are unknown. We aimed to dissociate neural activity reflecting past depression-load vs. present symptom severity using the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth (COBY), a prospective longitudinal cohort study of pediatric-onset BD. In n = 54 COBY (18-32 years), we modeled depression scores over time (up to 17.5 years) using a standardized autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model, followed by k-means cluster analysis. N = 36 healthy participants (HC, 20-36 years) were included
