Primary aortic myxofibrosarcoma mimicking thrombus: findings on CT, MRI, and angiography.

Aortic sarcoma is a rare vascular malignancy. We report a case of primary aortic myxofibrosarcoma mimicking thrombus. This neoplasm demonstrated no contrast enhancement on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and was clinically suspected to represent a large thrombus, although aortic primary neoplasm was considered in the differential diagnosis on the basis of imaging. Biopsies of the aortic lesion and a concurrent brain lesion were consistent with the diagnosis of aortic myxofibrosarcoma with brain metastasis. This report highlights overlapping imaging features between primary ao

Semi-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in an immunosuppressed patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The authors present the high-resolution computed tomography findings of an immunosuppressed patient with semi-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. CASE PRESENTATION: The main finding consisted of irregular, thick-walled cavity in the right upper lobe and a mass with soft-tissue attenuation within it and thickening of adjacent pleura. Additional findings were bronchial wall thickening associated with a 'tree-in-bud' pattern. Following the clinical, laboratorial and imaging criteria, the diagnosis of semi-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis was defined and antifungical treatment was intro

Disseminated lymphangiomatosis with skeletal involvement: detection with magnetic resonance lymphangiography.

Disseminated lymphangiomatosis is an uncommon disorder characterized by diffuse or multifocal proliferation of complex, irregular lymphatic channels involving soft tissue, viscera, retroperitoneum, eyes and the skeletal system. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasonography, and conventional radiography are the favored radiologic imaging modalities in assessing the extent of pathologic changes in patients suffering from disseminated lymphangiomatosis. Historically, imaging evaluation was performed with conventional lymphography. We report on the first patient suffe

CT and MRI findings of carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation.

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare tumor that occurs in the soft tissue of the neck or in the thyroid gland. We report a case of CASTLE in a 54-year-old man presenting with hoarseness. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a mass enclosing the right carotid artery with the shape of lobulation and invasion to the trachea. The mass was hypointense on T1-weighted imaging and, on T2-weighted imaging, showed a hyperintense periphery with isointense center relative to muscle. In dynamic MRI, the mass revealed gradual but slight heterogeneo

Automatic estimation of the corneal limbus in videokeratoscopy.

An algorithm for estimating the corneal limbus from videokeratoscopic images is proposed. After the image is transformed to a polar grid, a novel edge-detection procedure, suitable for the detection of the soft edge produced by the limbus, is used to locate the limbus. Outliers due to the eyelids, eyelashes, and videokeratoscopic rings are removed by taking advantage of the approximate circularity of the cornea. An ellipse which minimizes the sum of the squared algebraic errors is fitted to the remaining edge points. Comparisons between the proposed algorithm, a manual computer-based technique

Rare craniofacial anomaly: Tessier no. 2 cleft.

Four cases of facial cleft that fit the anatomic description of the rare Tessier no. 2 cleft, with two patients having the no. 12 cleft extending to the cranium as no. 2 clefts, are presented. In all patients, clinical expressions of the anomaly were different. Thus, diverse surgical procedures were used in all cases. These cases and review of the literature help to define the soft-tissue and bony course of these clefts, and also emphasize the role of three-dimensional computed tomography scan imaging to show the bony cleft route. The diagnosis and treatment plan of the no. 2 cleft as well as

Presurgical confirmation of craniofacial implant locations in children requiring implant-retained auricular prosthesis.

Early prosthetic treatment is believed to be psychologically beneficial to children who have an ear defect resulting from congenital malformation. Lack of soft tissue landmarks and minimal bone thickness in deformed auricular areas are sometimes problematic for craniofacial implant placement in these children. This article describes procedures to confirm locations of craniofacial auricular implants by using computed tomographic scan information and a surgical stent. The procedures can also be applied to children and adults to identify locations for auricular implant placement. This method ensu

Burkitt's lymphoma involving the mandible: report of a case and review of Japanese cases.

A Japanese case of Burkitt's lymphoma is presented. The intraoral and panoramic images showed alveolar bone destruction with an infiltrative border, displacement of lower molars, root resorption, and loss of lamina dura and the follicular cortex of a developing tooth, similar to descriptions in previous reports. Computed tomography revealed that a primary lesion occupied the mandible and extended to the muscles of facial expression and to the sublingual and submandibular spaces. Another soft tissue mass was evident in the contralateral parapharyngeal space. Results of a survey of the Japanese

Management of nasal aspergillosis in a dog with a single, noninvasive intranasal infusion of clotrimazole.

An 11-year-old, spayed female keeshond was presented for unilateral epistaxis and serous nasal discharge of four weeks duration. Initial nasal radiographs, rhinoscopy, and histopathology suggested severe, destructive lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis. The patient deteriorated while receiving an anti-inflammatory dose of prednisone. A computed tomographic scan of the nose demonstrated a soft-tissue density in both the right nasal cavity and frontal sinus. Samples for histopathology obtained at surgery were diagnostic for nasal aspergillosis. All clinical signs resolved with a single, noninvasive infus

Juvenile xanthogranuloma of nerve root origin.

A case of juvenile xanthogranuloma arising from the first sacral nerve root is reported together with a review of the literature. The patient presented with symptoms of low back pain and sciatica, and with S1 nerve root tensions signs. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass arising from the right S1 nerve root. The tumour was resected, and the morphological and immunocytochemical appearances of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of juvenile xanthogranuloma. Soft tissue juvenile xanthogranulomas have been described but are extremely rare. However, we believe this is

CT appearance of diaphragmatic pseudotumors.

Invaginations of the muscular fibers of the diaphragm into the upper abdomen may appear as nodules of soft tissue density on computed tomographic (CT) sections in deep inspiration. If these nodules indent the adjacent stomach or distal transverse colon, they may mimic small mural tumors or metastatic implants. Similar nodules protruding from the diaphragmatic crura into the adjacent retroperitoneal fat may be mistaken for enlarged lymph nodes on CT. Differential diagnosis of these pseudotumors from pathologic lesions is based on their continuity peripherally with the diaphragm and their separa

Computed tomography angiography features of a retroperitoneal extra-adrenal paraganglioma in a cat.

A 7-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of a large-volume abdominal space-occupying lesion. A computed tomography angiography examination detected a round retroperitoneal mass, in contact with the large abdominal vessels, characterized by an external hyperattenuating capsule and a larger hypoattenuating center. The capsule was soft-tissue attenuating with marked heterogenous contrast enhancement. The center was hypoattenuating pre- and post-contrast administration. The mass displaced both kidneys laterally and the descendent colon ventrally. The mesenteri

Comparison of the aesthetic impact on the mandibular angle of two types of osteotomy.

The growing aesthetic demand for projection and definition of the mandibular angle has challenged oral and maxillofacial surgeons, requiring new approaches to osteotomies during orthognathic surgery. This study was undertaken to compare the conventional sagittal split osteotomy (SSO) with anterior oblique osteotomy (AOO) regarding their effects on the mandibular angle in both bone and soft tissue outcomes. A longitudinal observational cohort study was conducted with patients who underwent orthognathic surgery, including pre- and postoperative computed tomography and photographic examinations w

When Infection Masquerades as Malignancy: Fatal Basidiobolomycosis Presenting as Suspected Rhabdomyosarcoma in a Child.

BACKGROUND: Basidiobolomycosis is an uncommon fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum, primarily impacting immunocompetent children in tropical areas. Its indolent presentation and radiologic mimicking to soft tissue cancers often result in misdiagnosis and delayed antifungal treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 10-year-old child from a remote farming community in Ghana who had a 2-year history of a progressively increasing abdominal wall mass, severe malnutrition, and respiratory distress. The initial computed tomography scan suggested rhabdomyosarcoma. Laboratory te

A Disease of the Past in the Present: From Trench Foot to Critical Care With Severe Non-freezing Cold Injury.

Non-freezing cold injury (NFCI), historically described as trench foot, is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition resulting from prolonged exposure to cold, wet environments at near-freezing temperatures. We present the case of a previously healthy 21-year-old man found partially submerged for three days, who developed profound hypothermia, shock, altered consciousness, and extensive soft tissue compromise. Laboratory evaluation revealed multiorgan dysfunction, and brain computed tomography (CT) demonstrated diffuse cerebral edema. Blood cultures became positive within seven hours,

Cervical Necrotizing Fasciitis With Intractable Hiccups.

We report a case of a 61-year-old immunosuppressed man with rheumatoid arthritis on etanercept and past intravenous drug use who presented with intractable hiccups, an unreported feature of cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF). He was initially diagnosed with a viral syndrome, but later developed severe sepsis with neck swelling, dysphagia, and ligneous induration. The absence of skin changes, probably secondary to etanercept-induced immunosuppression, hindered diagnosis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan of the neck indicated CNF accompanied by descending necrotizing mediastinit
