The feasibility and acceptability of a brief intervention for clients of substance use services experiencing symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common among clients of substance use services. Existing treatments for these co-occurring conditions tend to be lengthy, treatment retention is relatively poor, and they require extensive training and clinical supervision. The aim of the present study was to conduct a preliminary examination of the feasibility and acceptability of a brief intervention for PTSD symptoms among individuals seeking substance use treatment. METHODS: An uncontrolled open-label pilot study was conducted among 29 inpatients of a medicated deto

Exposure to violence among women with unwanted pregnancies and the association with post-traumatic stress disorder, symptoms of anxiety and depression.

AIM: The objective was to examine lifetime exposure to violence, physical and sexual, among women seeking termination of pregnancy (TOP) and its association with socio-demographic factors, PTSD, symptoms of anxiety and depression. DESIGN: The design of the study was a Swedish multi-centre study targeting women requesting TOP. METHODS: All women requesting TOP with a gestational length less than 12 pregnancy weeks were approached for participation in the study. The questionnaire comprised the following research instruments: Screen Questionnaire-Post traumatic Stress Disorder (SQ-PTSD) and Hos

Dysfunction of calcium/calmodulin/CaM kinase IIα cascades in the medial prefrontal cortex in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant problem that may affect individuals who have been exposed to a traumatic event or events, including combat, violent crime or childhood abuse. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is known to be significantly involved in emotional adjustment, particularly introspection, amygdala inhibition and emotional memory. In the acute phase of severe traumatic stress, the mPFC appears to undergo a change in plasticity for a short time, which suggests that the mPFC may be the reponse-sensitizing region. Calcium (Ca2+) is one of most significant intracel

For veterans with mild traumatic brain injury, improved posttraumatic stress disorder severity and sleep correlated with symptomatic improvement.

This was an observational study of a cohort of 63 Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) associated with an explosion. They had headaches, residual neurological deficits (NDs) on neurological examination, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and were seen on average 2.5 years after their last mTBI. We treated them with sleep hygiene counseling and oral prazosin. We monitored headache severity, daytime sleepiness using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, cognitive performance using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, and the presenc

Acute panicogenic, anxiogenic and dissociative effects of carbon dioxide inhalation in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

BACKGROUND: Increased anxiety and panic to inhalation of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) has been described in patients with anxiety disorders, especially panic disorder, compared to healthy subjects. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been hypothesised to resemble panic disorder and is currently classified as an anxiety disorder in DSM-IV. However, there are only very few data available about the sensitivity of patients with PTSD to CO(2). METHODS: In 10 patients with PTSD, 10 sex- and age-matched healthy subjects and 8 patients with panic disorder we assessed anxiety, panic, dissociative and

Use of healthcare services 8 years after the war in Kosovo: role of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to examine the use of health-care services and medication, as well as health risk behaviours such as smoking, in relation with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive episode (MDE) in post-war Kosovo. METHODS: A sample of 864 adults was interviewed in 2007 of which 551 took part in a 2001 survey. They were assessed using the PTSD and MDE sections of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Use of health-care services, alcohol and tobacco were

Behaviorally inhibited temperament is associated with severity of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and faster eyeblink conditioning in veterans.

Prior studies have sometimes demonstrated facilitated acquisition of classically conditioned responses and/or resistance to extinction in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is unclear whether these behaviors are acquired as a result of PTSD or exposure to trauma, or reflect preexisting risk factors that confer vulnerability for PTSD. Here, we examined classical eyeblink conditioning and extinction in veterans self-assessed for current PTSD symptoms, exposure to combat, and the personality trait of behavioral inhibition (BI), a risk factor for PTSD. A total of 128 veterans were

The Risk of Suicide according to Drug Abuse and Nicotine Dependence in Patients with War Injuries and Chronic Traumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of suicide is higher in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than the general population. This prevalence rate is related to many factors including drug dependence. This study was conducted in people wounded during the Iran-Iraq war with PTSD, in order to compare the risk of suicide in those with and without drug and nicotine dependence. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted in 2007-2008, comprised 104 male individuals who had participated in the Iran-Iraq war and had a current diagnosis of PTSD. They had been referred to a psychiatry hospi

Increased DHEA and DHEA-S plasma levels in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and a history of childhood abuse.

Current findings about dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S) in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been inconsistent. We investigated whether a history of severe childhood traumatisation affects these steroids in PTSD patients. Patients of 33 with chronic PTSD (15 with and 18 without sexual and/or severe physical abuse before age 12) were studied in a combined low dose dexamethasone/corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) test. Mean pre-CRH levels of both plasma DHEA and DHEA-S were significantly increased in the subgroup with childhood

Memory and prefrontal functions in earthquake survivors: differences between current and past post-traumatic stress disorder patients.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies reported deficits in cognitive functions in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Most were, however, conducted on man-made trauma survivors. The high comorbidity of alcohol use and depression with PTSD in these studies further complicated the interpretation of their results. We compared prefrontal lobe functions and memory in three earthquake survivor groups: current PTSD, past PTSD and no PTSD. We hypothesized that prefrontal performances of the current and past PTSD groups would be worse than that of control group. METHOD: Survivors of the 1999 earthquakes in Turke

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in children and adolescents: from Sigmund Freud's "trauma" to psychopathology and the (Dys)metabolic syndrome.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety syndrome that develops after exposure to traumatic life events. Symptoms include re-experience of the initial trauma, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma and symptoms of excessive arousal. Neuroendocrine studies in adults with PTSD have demonstrated that basal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) CRH levels are elevated and urinary cortisol levels are variable--low in the majority of cases--whereas other studies demonstrate no differences in urinary and plasma cortisol concentrations. Urinary catecholamine excretion is higher in PTSD patient

Contribution of cognitive factors to the prediction of post-traumatic stress disorder, phobia and depression after motor vehicle accidents.

Past research into the psychological consequences of traumatic events has largely focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), although other anxiety disorders and depression are also common in the aftermath of trauma. Little is known about differential predictors of these conditions. The present study investigated the extent to which theoretically derived cognitive variables predict PTSD, phobias and depression after motor vehicle accidents. The cognitive predictors were compared to a set of established, mainly non-cognitive predictors. In addition, we tested how disorder-specific the co

Cocaine dependence with and without post-traumatic stress disorder: a comparison of substance use, trauma history and psychiatric comorbidity.

This study examined the relationship between substance use, trauma history, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and psychiatric comorbidity in a treatment seeking sample of cocaine dependent individuals (N = 91). Structured clinical interviews revealed that 42.9% of the sample met DSM-III-R criteria for lifetime PTSD. Comparisons between individuals with and without lifetime PTSD revealed that individuals with PTSD had significantly higher rates of exposure to traumatic events, earlier age of first assault, more severe symptomatology, and higher rates of Axis I and Axis II diagnoses. Post-traumatic stress disorder among American Legionnaires in relation to combat experience in Vietnam: associated and contributing factors.

The relationship between combat stress, DSM-III-defined post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and a variety of behavioral factors was examined in a large nonclinical population. A total of 2858 randomly selected American Legion members who had served in Southeast Asia completed a questionnaire which elicited information on military service, personal health, and a variety of mental health outcomes. The data confirm the utility of the PTSD diagnosis as a distinct clinical entity. The frequency of PTSD and the extent of symptoms developed varied with the severity of criteria used for determining

Is post-traumatic stress disorder a risk factor for development of opioid use disorder among individuals with chronic non-cancer pain? A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: There is emerging evidence that posttraumatic-stress disorder may have mediating effects in development of chronic-non-cancer-pain and opioid-use-disorder independently, but its impact on the development of opioid-use-disorder in people with chronic-non-cancer pain is still unclear. OBJECTIVES: (i) Estimate the risk of opioid-use-disorder among individuals with chronic-non-cancer-pain and posttraumatic-stress disorder, relative to those with chronic-non-cancer-pain only, and (ii) identify potential correlates of opioid-use-disorder among people with chronic-non-cancer-pain and p

Psychostimulants for the Treatment of Comorbid Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in a Patient With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A Case Report and Literature Summary.

We present a case of a 35-year-old female with an extensive history of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who experienced a traumatic sexual and physical assault and later developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The patient disclosed that her current medication (Vyvanse) used to treat ADHD has been the only treatment modality that has helped control her intrusive thoughts and nightmares. Decreased dopaminergic receptors are associated with developing PTSD and psychostimulants are known to have an effect of increasing Dopamine release. This case report shows promising resu
