Adolescent Surgery Experience (ASE) Prospective Cohort Study: Postoperative Pain Trajectory, Opioid Use, and Satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Between 3 and 5% of adolescents develop new persistent opioid use after surgery. Little is known about their recovery experience, including pain trajectory, pain treatment, and prolonged opioid use. METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled adolescents between June 2022 to May 2023 before undergoing select procedures associated with mild, moderate, or severe postoperative pain ("major procedures"). Data were collected using text-message surveys at baseline, daily for the first 2 postoperative weeks and monthly for 5 months; baseline data are reported separately. The primary

Maternal point-of-care ultrasound training during Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship: A national survey.

INTRODUCTION: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is widely used to facilitate management of critical patients. Literature about maternal POCUS (M-POCUS) is limited, but there is interest in its potential to optimize care for high-risk obstetric patients. Currently, there is no data on the frequency of M-POCUS use among Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) fellows in training. We aimed to determine what proportion of MFM fellows perform M-POCUS, and whether exposure to an obstetric intensive care unit (OBICU) impacts M-POCUS utilization. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of fellows in the Unit

Pilot study of a community-based PM2.5 educational intervention: impacts on behavior, exposure, and pulmonary function.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM) is a recognized Group 1 carcinogen and is also associated with adverse cardiopulmonary and neurological outcomes. However, community-based strategies to reduce exposure among vulnerable populations remain limited in Korea. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of a structured, nurse-delivered educational intervention to improve protective behaviors, reduce indoor PM2.5, and enhance pulmonary function among older adults. METHODS: A cluster non-randomized controlled trial, involving 59 participants (intervention group, n = 30; control g

Comparative functional, perioperative and oncological outcomes of robot-assisted and open radical prostatectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has increasingly replaced open radical prostatectomy (ORP) based on evidence suggesting improved perioperative outcomes and faster recovery. However, few randomized trials directly compare both techniques. This review compares perioperative, functional, and oncological outcomes of RARP versus ORP, integrating newly available high-impact studies. METHODS: A thorough search of major databases was conducted from the inception of each database up to November 2025, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Two reviewers independently screened studies

'The Second Arrow': A Collaborative Autoethnographic Exploration of What Can Be Learned From One Long COVID Journey.

INTRODUCTION: Long COVID is a complex multisystem illness with multiple relapsing-remitting symptoms, which can vary in severity and impact people's daily lives. This study utilises the first author's experience of falling ill with and recovering from long COVID to investigate the lived experience of the illness. Learnings that could positively influence how people with long COVID, and health professionals, approach rehabilitation and recovery from the illness going forward are identified. METHODS: Employing collaborative autoethnography, the first author investigated her personal experience

A personalized and systematically designed adherence intervention improves photoprotection in adults with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP): results of the XPAND randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence to photoprotection in xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) increases morbidity and shortens lifespan due to skin cancers. OBJECTIVES: To test a highly personalized intervention (XPAND) to reduce the dose of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) reaching the face in adults with XP, designed using known psychosocial determinants of poor photoprotection. METHODS: A two-arm parallel group randomized controlled trial, including patients with suboptimal photoprotection to receive XPAND or a delayed-intervention control arm that received XPAND the following year. XPAND comprises seven 1 : 1

Exploratory analysis of blood alcohol concentration-related technology use and drinking outcomes among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) technology use may reduce alcohol use and related negative consequences; however, little is known about its efficacy without prompting from researchers or pay-per-use. This exploratory analysis assessed relationships between mHealth technology use frequency and alcohol-use outcomes. METHODS: Young adults who drink heavily (N = 97, Mage = 23, 51% male, 64% non-Hispanic White, Mdrinks/week = 21) had the option to use three mHealth technologies (breathalyzer device/app, blood alcohol content estimator app, drink counting via text message) while drinking for 2

The effects of regular home delivery of HIV self-testing and follow-up counselling on HIV testing and prevention outcomes in men who have sex with men who test infrequently in the United States: a pragmatic, virtual randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Past research shows that HIV self-testing (HIVST) can increase testing and facilitate more HIV diagnoses relative to clinic testing. However, in the United States, the use of HIVSTs is limited due to concerns that those who use HIVST could be less likely to be linked to care. METHODS: From January 2019 to April 2022, we recruited 811 men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States who tested infrequently using an online marketing campaign and randomized them 1:1:1 to receive one of the following every 3 months for a year: (1) text message reminders to get tested at a local

The Marri Gudjaga project: a study protocol for a randomised control trial using Aboriginal peer support workers to promote breastfeeding of Aboriginal babies.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding protects against a range of conditions in the infant, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), diarrhoea, respiratory infections and middle ear infections [1, 2]. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding until six months of age, with continued breastfeeding recommended for at least two years and other complementary nutritious foods [3]. The 2017-18 National Health Survey (NHS) and 2018-19 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) reported that the proportion of breastfeeding in Aboriginal and Torres Stra

A study protocol for a European, mixed methods, prospective, cohort study of the effectiveness of naloxone administration by community members, in reversing opioid overdose: NalPORS.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, opioid use causes more than 100,000 overdose deaths annually. Naloxone has proven efficacy in reversing opioid overdoses and is approved as an emergency antidote to opioid overdose. Take home naloxone (THN) programmes have been introduced to provide 'community members', who are likely to observe opioid overdoses, with naloxone kits and train them to recognise an overdose and administer naloxone. The acceptability and feasibility of THN programmes has been demonstrated, but the real-life effectiveness of naloxone administration by community members is not known. In recent

Evaluating the impact of culturally specific patient-centric behavioral intervention package versus usual care for tobacco cessation among patients attending noncommunicable disease clinics in North India: A single-blind trial pilot study protocol.

BACKGROUND: In a low and middle-income country (LMIC) like India, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) contribute a major proportion (61.8%) of all causes of death. Out of this, 48% of cardiovascular diseases , 23% of Chronic Respiratory Diseases , and 10% of Cancer deaths are attributable to tobacco use. Tobacco use is a major risk factor for NCDs and thus, the tobacco cessation approach is a high priority intervention to combat complications and death among NCD patients. While several interventions are available for tobacco cessation, in resource constraint countries like India, the effectivenes

The use of the mHealth program Smarter Pregnancy in preconception care: rationale, study design and data collection of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy nutrition and lifestyle contribute to the worldwide rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases. This also accounts for the reproductive population, in which unhealthy behavior affects fertility and pregnancy outcome. Maternal smoking, alcohol consumption and inadequate folic acid supplement use are strongly associated with fetal complications as small for gestational age, premature birth and congenital malformations. In the Netherlands 83% of the perinatal mortality rate is due to these complications and is relatively high compared to other European countries. In orde
