Variation in parameters affecting risk of human disease due to TBE virus.

To rank variables affecting risk of human disease due to tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in the Russian Far East, we compared annual changes in (1) frequency of human contact with vector ticks, (2) prevalence of infection in the tick population and (3) quantity of virus present infected ticks. Sites were sampled uniformly over a 4-year period in a forested region where Ixodes persulcatus serves as the principle vector. The questing density of ticks on vegetation remained relatively constant during the course of this study. The frequency of contacts of the local human population with ticks

Effects of a lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) burden on performance and metabolic indicators in growing beef steers.

We examined the response of selected animal performance, endocrine, immune, and metabolic factors from 13 steers (254+/-6.1 kg) with and without a lone star (Amblyomma americanum) tick burden during progressive days of the tick feeding cycle. Steers were randomly assigned to either non-treated controls or treated with 300 adult pair of A. americanum per animal. Animals were weighed and blood sampled on days -7, 0, 10, 14, 21, 28, and 35 relative to tick treatment. Tick treatment did not affect (P<0.1) animal performance. Experimental day did (P<0.05) affect body weight gain and dry matter inta

Does fluralaner (Exzolt® 5%) affect the enzootic stability of tick fever in beef calves subjected to strategic tick control in a tropical region?

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impact of fluralaner on herd enzootic stability regarding tick fever pathogens (TFPs). This study aimed to assess whether implementing strategic control of Rhipicephalus microplus using fluralaner could influence the enzootic stability of beef herds regarding TFPs on a farm where this compound had never been previously used. METHODS: One hundred Bos taurus indicus calves were divided into two groups of 50 animals each. One group underwent strategic tick control with pour-on fluralaner at 2.5 mg/kg (FLU), while the control group received a pour-on combinat

First molecular detection of Mycoplasma ovis in horses from Brazil.

This study aimed to determine the occurrence of hemoplasmas and tick-borne pathogens (TBP) (Theileria equi, Babesia caballi, and Ehrlichia sp.) in horses and ticks' salivary glands, and determine the factors associated with exposure/infection in a rural settlement in southern Brazil. Blood samples from 22 horses were screened for anti-T. equi and anti-Ehrlichia sp. antibodies by an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) assays. Samples were also tested by PCR assays for T. equi and B. caballi (18S rRNA and rap-1 genes, respectively), hemoplasmas (16S rRNA gene), and Ehrlichia sp. (dsb gene)

The on-Site Monitoring and Specimen-Making of Ectoparasites on Rodents and Other Small Mammals.

The ectoparasites of rodents and other small mammals usually involve five categories of arthropods-fleas, sucking lice, gamasid mites, chigger mites, and occasionally, ticks. These ectoparasites are medically important, serving as vectors for diseases such as plague, murine typhus, scrub typhus, forest encephalitis, Lyme disease, and other zoonoses. Field surveys, collection, and specimen preparation of ectoparasites are crucial for studying taxonomy, faunistics, ecology, and epidemiology. They are also essential for vector surveillance. The present protocol summarizes the on-site monitoring a

Ectoparasites of dogs (Canis familiaris) from northeastern Nigeria: an epidemiological study.

Ectoparasites of dogs represent an important group of parasites. They often suck blood, cause pruritis, and could serve as vectors of many pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. In northeastern Nigeria, there is a lack of data regarding ectoparasites of dogs. Therefore, this study was undertaken to explore the external parasites of dogs and the associated epidemiological risk factors. A total of 1041 dogs (mean age = 8.5 ± 2.1 months) from residential house visit (54.9%) and those attending veterinary clinic (45.1%) were sampled in northeastern Nigeria. Multivariate logistic reg

Serologic responses to peptides of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi in dogs infested with wild-caught Ixodes scapularis.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi are both transmitted by Ixodes spp. and are associated with clinical illness in some infected dogs. This study evaluated canine antibody responses to the A. phagocytophilum p44 peptides APH-1 and APH-4 as well as the B. burgdorferi C6 peptide before and after doxycycline treatment. A total of eight dogs were infested with wild-caught I. scapularis for 1 week. Blood was collected prior to tick attachment and from Days 3-77 to 218-302 with doxycycline treatment beginning on Day 218. Blood was assayed for A. phagocytophilum DNA by PCR assay. Sera

First detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and enzootic focus of Theileria orientalis in cattle from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Theileria orientalis is a tick-borne intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite of cattle causing oriental or benign theileriosis. It has a worldwide distribution and is not considered a zoonotic agent, while the disease symptoms range from subclinical to severe. Theileria spp. are very common co-infecting agents with other tick borne pathogens such as Babesia spp., Anaplasma spp. including zoonotic Anaplasma phagocytophilum with rising prominence. This study is an exploratory investigation of the occurrence of Anaplasma spp. and other blood parasites in cattle from Gacko and Bileća, Herzegovina. Bl

The effect of fluralaner treatment of small mammals on the endemic cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi in a natural environment.

Among approaches aimed at reducing Lyme disease risk in the environment, those targeting reservoirs of Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson are promising because they have the potential to reduce both the density of questing Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidea) ticks and the prevalence of B. burgdorferi in the tick population. In this 4-yr field study, we treated a population of wild small mammals with 2 densities of fluralaner baits and investigated the effect of the treatment on 3 parameters of the endemic cycle of B. burgdorferi: (i) the prevalence of infected Peromyscus mice (PIM), (ii) the den

Sex ratios of the tick Ixodes arboricola are strongly female-biased, but there are no indications of sex-distorting bacteria.

Studies on sex ratio are of fundamental importance for understanding the biology of populations and biological control of pests and pathogens. In most Ixodes tick species, only females feed in the adult stage and, hence, contribute to pathogen transmission. The tree-hole tick Ixodes arboricola infests cavity-nesting birds and has limited dispersal possibilities. It plays an important role in the maintenance of zoonotic disease cycles. Here, we quantified the sex ratio of 718 adult I. arboricola ticks obtained from a laboratory stock at nine distinct periods (cohorts) from 2008 to 2015. In addi

Interaction between acari ectoparasites and rodents in Suez Governorate, Egypt.

From the medical point of view, the relation between man and rodents comes in the priority. Some rodent populations are wild but others are commensal and live in close association with man. They steal his food and conveying many zoonotic diseases. Their arthropod ectoparasites play an important role in conveying or transmitting these zoonotic diseases. Several disorders and diseases of man are tick borne relapsing fever, Rocky mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, and many others. Besides numerous species of mites occasionally infest man. They transmit several diseases as Rickettsia tsutsugamu

Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment of Rocky Mountain spotted fever are reviewed. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a severe infection caused by Rickettsia rickettsii transmitted to man by various species of ticks. High-incidence areas exist in the southeast and south central United States. Only 60-70% of patients with the disease report a history of tick bite or exposure to tick-infested areas. The disease is initially characterized by fever, headache, gastrointestinal complaints, myalgia, and a generalized rash. In several days generalized vasculitis may lead to pe

Parasitism in captive and reintroduced red wolves.

Fecal examinations revealed that at least 10 of 21 (48%) captive red wolves (Canis rufus) and eight of 12 (67%) free-ranging red wolves were infected with intestinal parasites. No captive wolves and only one of seven reintroduced wolves had dirofilariasis. Ticks were collected from 10 of 21 (48%) captive wolves and nine of 12 (75%) free-ranging animals. Ivermectin administered at a dosage of 50 micrograms/kg of estimated body weight every 30 to 60 days apparently prevented or ameliorated parasitism in red wolves.

Feeding-state is associated with shifts in the Haemaphysalis bispinosa microbiome and its potential as a sentinel for circulating livestock pathogens.

Ticks harbour microbial communities that shape their capacity to acquire and transmit host-associated bacteria. Haemaphysalis (H.) bispinosa is a tick that widely infests variety of hosts across Asia, yet how its bacterial communities are reconfigured across the transition from free-living to blood-feeding states in the field remains poorly understood. Herein, we characterise the microbiome of H. bispinosa using full-length 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. A total of 225 ticks were collected from cattle and the surrounding environment in Central Java, Indonesia. The analysis revealed a diverse array

In vitro repellency of DEET and β-citronellol against the ticks Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and Amblyomma sculptum.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and Amblyomma sculptum can parasite humans and domestic animals and are vectors of pathogens, including zoonoses. Repellents are an important tool of tick control. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of N,N-diethyl- 3-methylbenzamide (DEET), a standard repellent, versus β-citronellol in a Petri dish bioassay. A semicircle of filter paper (31.8cm2) was treated with 87μl of one of four concentrations (0.200, 0.100, 0.050 and 0.025mg/cm2) of β-citronellol, DEET or solvent (ethanol). A head-to-head test was developed treating one side with increasing concen

Low risk of Lyme borreliosis in a protected area on the Tyrrhenian coast, in central Italy.

A comprehensive Lyme borreliosis risk assessment process was applied in S. Rossore Estate, on the Tyrrhenian coast, near Pisa, Italy. Host-seeking Ixodes ricinus nymphs peaked in May in oak-dominated deciduous wood (median, Q1-Q3, number of nymphs/50 m dragging = 4.5, 2.5-8), whereas host-seeking larvae peaked in August in the same habitat type (6.0, 4-17/50 m dragging). Prevalence of I. ricinus infestation was 88.9% in wild rodents (n = 11), 64.3% in fallow deer (n = 28) and 0.0% in wild boars (n = 5). Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was not isolated from rodents' organs, and from 80 I. ricin

Permethrin-impregnated bednets reduce nuisance arthropods in Gambian houses.

The prevalence of bedbugs (Cimex hemipterus L.), chicken ticks (Argas persicus Oken) and headlice (Pediculus capitis De Geer) was surveyed in a rural area of The Gambia. At the beginning of the study 37.5% of children's beds were infested with bedbugs and 3.9% with chicken ticks, whilst the prevalence rate of pediculosis in children under 10 years old was 28.8%. Both bedbugs and headlice were clustered within compounds. Headlice prevalence increased with hair length and they were more common on girls than boys. Following this cross-sectional survey all bednets in the sixteen hamlets were eithe

Molecular evidence indicts Haemaphysalis leachi (Acari: Ixodidae) as the vector of Babesia rossi in dogs in Nigeria, West Africa.

Babesia rossi is the most pathogenic among the large canine babesias and it is the major cause of canine babesisosis in Nigeria. In South Africa it is transmitted by Haemaphysalis elliptica however, its putative vector in Nigeria where Rhipicephalus sanguineus is the most prevalent tick on dogs compared to Haemaphysalis species has not been ascertained. The incongruity between tick distribution and the frequent detection of B. rossi in Nigeria motivated this investigation to identify the local vector(s) of B. rossi. A total of 3805 ticks were collected from 363 naturally infested dogs from dif
