Glaucoma: now and beyond.

The glaucomas are a group of conditions leading to irreversible sight loss and characterised by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells. Although not always elevated, intraocular pressure is the only modifiable risk factor demonstrated by large clinical trials. It remains the leading cause of irreversible blindness, but timely treatment to lower intraocular pressure is effective at slowing the rate of vision loss from glaucoma. Methods for lowering intraocular pressure include laser treatments, topical medications, and surgery. Although modern surgical innovations aim to be less invasive, m

Diagnosis and management of postrefractive surgery ectasia.

Postrefractive surgery ectasia is a serious, sight-threatening complication seen after the following procedures: laser in situ keratomileusis, photorefractive keratectomy, small-incision lenticule extraction, radial keratotomy, and/or arcuate keratotomy. Specific risk factors may include age, corneal thickness, degree of refractive error, corneal topographic changes including irregular astigmatism, percent tissue ablation, and residual stromal bed. Biomarkers may be a new option to help indicate who is at greatest risk for ectasia. Visual aids including spectacles or contacts lenses are often

Retinopathy of prematurity: the disease process, classifications, screening, treatment, and outcomes.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the cessation of normal eye development and subsequent abnormal vessel growth that occurs exclusively in premature infants. ROP was first discovered in the 1940s and was for two decades the leading cause of blindness in children. Currently, the disease causes about 500 new cases of blindness per year. The severity of the disease increases with decreasing gestational age. The pathogenesis of ROP involves disruption of normal retinal vascularization. Vessel endothelial growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, and oxygen play important roles in its developmen

Multimodal diagnosis of Parkinson's disease with an internet-based collaborative agent architecture of medical language models.

Parkinson's disease (PD) remains one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders, where delays in diagnosis compromise therapeutic outcomes and increase healthcare costs. Conventional unimodal approaches, based on voice, sensors, or imaging, face critical limitations, including small datasets, lack of reproducibility, and high infrastructure demands. To address these challenges, the proposed multimodal agent-based architecture integrates medical language models, audio signals, and neuroimaging, and is supported by data-machine learning pipelines and an edge-cloud infrastructure. The syst

Early retinal disease detection from fundus images using deep neural networks.

Manual diagnosis of retinal diseases from fundus images is slow, subjective, and highly dependent on specialist availability, an ongoing challenge in low-resource regions that leads to delayed treatment and preventable vision loss. This study aims to develop a high-accuracy, automated deep learning framework for early detection of multiple retinal diseases using fundus images, with emphasis on methodological transparency, comparative model evaluation, and applicability in real clinical environments. A dataset of 3,848 labeled fundus images from the University of Gondar Referral Hospital was pr

Task optimized vision transformer for diabetic retinopathy detection and classification in resource constrained early diagnosis settings.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a progressive complication of diabetes and a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. Early detection and accurate classification of DR severity are critical for timely intervention but remain challenging, particularly in resource-constrained settings. While conventional deep learning (DL) models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown promising results, they often struggle to capture long-range dependencies in retinal fundus images and typically require substantial computational resources, limiting their utility on low-cost hardware. To a

Analysis on diagnosing diabetic retinopathy by segmenting blood vessels, optic disc and retinal abnormalities.

The main intention of mass screening programmes for Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is to detect and diagnose the disorder earlier than it leads to vision loss. Automated analysis of retinal images has the likelihood to improve the efficacy of screening programmes when compared over the manual image analysis. This article plans to develop a framework for the detection of DR from the retinal fundus images using three evaluations based on optic disc, blood vessels and retinal abnormalities. Initially, the pre-processing steps like green channel conversion and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equali
