Differential diagnosis of pediatric conjunctivitis (red eye).

Because eye injuries and diseases may potentially result in serious vision impairments, accurate diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic conditions are imperative. A symptom common to eye impairments is conjunctivitis, or red eye, a commonly seen manifestation in an ambulatory pediatric population. Because conjunctivitis is caused by various etiologies, clinicians must derive a differential diagnosis. This article examines possible causes of conjunctivitis after the neonatal period in this population. Differential diagnosis is dependent on a complete history, distinct physical findings, and use

A survey of color discrimination in German ophthalmologists. Changes associated with the use of lasers and operating microscopes.

Color vision tests were performed on 211 German ophthalmologists during their annual meeting at Essen. The subjects also answered detailed questionnaires about their use of lasers and operating microscopes, and their ocular and general health. It was found that 33% of doctors who use lasers or operating microscopes have decreased color discrimination for colors in a tritan color-confusion axis (greater than 2 standard deviations above normal). There is a relationship between number of patients treated and the degree of threshold elevation. Thirty hours of using the operating microscope produce…

Testing of vestibular function: an adjunct in the assessment of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) often complain of dysequilibrium that is nonspecific. The basis of this complaint is unknown but may be related to vestibular system abnormalities, in that an association between inner-ear deficits and infectious mononucleosis has been established in the medical literature. An overview of quantitative vestibular function testing is given, including vestibulo-ocular and vestibulospinal tests. The basic principles of caloric and rotational testing are provided, including the interaction between vision and the vestibular system. Moving-platform posturo

The King-Devick (K-D) test of rapid eye movements: a bedside correlate of disability and quality of life in MS.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the King-Devick (K-D) test of rapid number naming as a visual performance measure in a cohort of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 81 patients with MS and 20 disease-free controls from an ongoing study of visual outcomes underwent K-D testing. A test of rapid number naming, K-D requires saccadic eye movements as well as intact vision, attention and concentration. To perform the K-D test, participants are asked to read numbers aloud as quickly as possible from three test cards; the sum of the three test card times in secon

Visual dysfunctions and ocular disorders in children with developmental delay. II. Aspects of refractive errors, strabismus and contrast sensitivity.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of refractive errors, strabismus and reduced contrast sensitivity in an unselected group of children with developmental delay (DD), and to propose extensions to the existing guidelines to assess the number of examinations required to optimally support children with DD. METHODS: A total of 923 children with IQ < or = 80, aged 4-15 years, from Copenhagen County, Denmark, were ophthalmically examined. The prevalence of refractive errors and strabismus and the presence of reduced contrast sensitivity were recorded and related to level of IQ. RESULTS: Among the

Color Vision Losses in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by impairments in social/communication abilities and restricted behaviors. The present study aims to examine color vision discrimination in ASD children and adolescents without intellectual disability. The participants were also subdivided in order to compare color vision thresholds of autistic participants and those who achieved diagnostic criteria for Asperger Syndrome (AS). Nine subjects with autism, 11 participants with AS and 36 typically developing children and adolescents participated in the study. Color vi

Visual-evoked potentials and electroretinograms in ruminants with thiamine-responsive polioencephalomalacia or suspected listeriosis.

Electrodiagnostic visual testing (electroretinogram [ERG] and visual-evoked potential [VEP]) was performed on 5 ruminants (3 lambs, 1 kid, and 1 steer) with thiamine-responsive polioencephalomalacia (PEM) and on 2 sheep with listeriosis. The lambs and kid had typical clinical signs of PEM, especially blindness. In these animals, the ERG was normal but the VEP was abnormal. Follow-up recordings in the kid and 1 lamb indicated an improvement in VEP recordings accompanying a gradual return of vision after thiamine treatment. Possible subtle changes in VEP peak latencies could not be assessed beca

Cortical blindness after overlapping retinal-striate lesions: a limit to plasticity in the central visual system.

Lesions in cats, rats, and monkeys that spare more than 2% of the optic tract or visual cortex cause trivial deficits on most measures of vision. Overlap in the topography of the visual system may allow the spared remnant to 'see' a wider field of vision than the physiological map predicts. We tested whether monkeys left with only the lower retinal-field portion of their striate map could see with information coming from the upper half of the retina. In 6 rhesus monkeys the ganglion fibers exiting from the lower half of both retinae were cut with a photocoagulator. Later, the portion of area 1

Effect of stroboscopic vision on single leg hop for distance performance in athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, athletes may become more reliant on their vision to maintain postural control. Wearing stroboscopic glasses, which intermittently disrupt visual input, can result in decreased vision. However, it remains unclear whether this affects single-leg hopping distance in athletes after ACL reconstruction (ACLR). DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Sports physiotherapy clinics and sports clubs. PARTICIPANTS: Athletes (Tegner-score >5) who were (mean (standard deviation)) 16.9 (4.6) months after ACLR (n = 17, age:24.7 (4.6) years), an

Molecular basis of abnormal red-green color vision: a family with three types of color vision defects.

The molecular nature of three different types of X-linked color-vision defects, protanomaly, deuteranomaly, and protanopia, in a large 3-generation family was determined. In the protanomalous and protanopic males the normal red pigment gene was replaced by a 5' red-3' green fusion gene. The protanomalous male had more red pigment DNA in his fusion gene than did the more severely affected protanopic individual. The deuteranomalous individual had four green pigment genes and one 5' green-3' red fusion gene. These results extend those of Nathans et al., who proposed that most red-green color-visi

Obesity and physical activity in children with early vision problems: a secondary analysis of data from the Growing-Up in Ireland study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cross-sectional studies have observed an association between obesity and vision problems. However, longitudinal studies are needed in order to understand the direction of the association. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We used de-identified data from the Growing Up in Ireland infant cohort. Analyses included 6 621 children with height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements at age 9 and age 3 or 5. World Health Organization standards were used to classify BMI as either living with excess weight (BMI ≥ 85th percentile) or living with obesity (BMI ≥ 95th percentile). At age 9, c
