Beaked whales are elusive deep-diving odontocetes, and their distribution and foraging ecology remain poorly documented in Australian waters. This study presents a passive acoustic monitoring (PAM)-based assessment of beaked whale foraging activity along Australia's Northwest Shelf-a continental shelf region with features typically conducive to beaked whale sustenance. The area is also of economic significance due to ongoing offshore oil and gas production, commercial fishing, and commercial shipping, raising concerns about potential impacts on these deep-diving cetaceans. This study collected

Vocalizations of coral reef fishes provide critical insights into population dynamics, community structure, and ecological processes, making passive acoustic monitoring an essential tool for coral reef conservation and management. However, automatic recognition of coral reef fish sounds remains highly challenging due to strong background noise, pronounced intra-class variability, and high inter-class similarity. To address these challenges, a contrastive reef-acoustic learning network (CoRAL-Net) is proposed for coral reef fish sound classification, in which a robust spectro-temporal feature e

Most offspring are born helpless, requiring intense caregiving from parents especially during the first few days of neonatal life. For many species, infant cries are a primary signal used by parents to provide caregiving. Previously we and others documented how maternal left auditory cortex rapidly becomes sensitized to pup calls over hours of parental experience, enabled by oxytocin. The speed and robustness of this maternal plasticity suggests cortical pre-tuning or initial bias for pup call stimulus features. Here we examine the circuit basis of left-lateralized tuning to vocalization featu

Northern saw-whet owls (Aegolius acadicus) are known for their unique asymmetrical ear structure and ability to localize prey acoustically, yet few attempts have been made to explore the auditory capabilities of this species. In this study, we evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) with tonebursts to assess three main hypotheses regarding the evolution of auditory sensitivity: sender-receiver matching, ecological constraints, and phylogenetic/morphological constraints. We found that ABR amplitude increased with increasing stimulus level, which is consistent with results in other avian spec

PURPOSE: Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy in thyroid surgery is still a threatening complication. Our aim was to analyze the impact of prolonged tensile stress on the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) in an animal model using continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring (C-IONM).
METHODS: Constant tensile stress was applied to left and right RLNs in 20 pigs (40 RLN). In a pilot study, five animals were subjected to a tensile force of 0.34 ± 0.07 N for 10 min and changes in amplitude were documented using C-IONM. In the main study, a force of 1.2 N was applied until the signal amplitude was reduced

UNLABELLED: Seasonally breeding songbirds exhibit pronounced annual changes in song behavior, and in the morphology and physiology of the telencephalic neural circuit underlying production of learned song. Each breeding season, new adult-born neurons are added to the pallial nucleus HVC in response to seasonal changes in steroid hormone levels, and send long axonal projections to their target nucleus, the robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA). We investigated the role that adult neurogenesis plays in the seasonal reconstruction of this circuit. We labeled newborn HVC neurons with BrdU, and RA

BACKGROUND: Delirium occurs in up to 80% of intensive care patients and is associated with poor outcomes. The biological cause of delirium remains elusive.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if delirium and recovery are associated with serum levels of interleukins and apolipoprotein E over time and with apolipoprotein E genotype.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 77 patients with no previous cognitive deficits who required mechanical ventilation for 24 to 96 hours. Daily serum samples were obtained for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay measurements of interleukins 6, 8, and 10 and apolipoprotein E. DNA

Changes in the diving behavior of individual free-ranging juvenile northern elephant seals, Mirounga angustirostris, exposed to the acoustic thermometry of the ocean climate (ATOC) sound source were examined using data loggers. Data loggers were attached to the animals and measured swim speed, maximum depth of dive, dive duration, surface interval, descent and ascent rate, and descent and ascent angle along with sound pressure level (SPL). The ATOC sound source was at a depth of 939 m and transmitted at 195 dB re: 1 microPa at 1 m centered at 75 Hz with a 37.5-Hz bandwidth. Sound pressure leve

Many previous studies of laryngeal biomechanics using in vivo models have employed a constant air How source. Several authors have recently suggested that the lung-thorax system functions as a constant pressure source during phonation. This study describes an in vivo canine system designed to maintain a constant peak subglottic pressure (Psub) using a pressure-controlling mechanism. Increasing levels of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation resulted in a significant rise in resistance followed by a plateau. For a given Psub, flow decreased significantly and precipitously with increasing

Altered sensitivity to environmental stimuli is a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that may drive vulnerability to stress-related and anxiety disorders. To investigate this relationship, we evaluated autonomic and behavioral responses to tactile, nociceptive, and social stressors in juvenile Wistar rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid (VPA), a well-established model of ASD. VPA-exposed and saline-treated control (CTL) rats were subjected to a behavioral paradigm measuring defecation, freezing, and ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in response to handling, electro-tactile stimul

Major depressive disorder (MDD) involves cognitive impairment, altered affective states and dysregulation of neurotransmitter homeostasis. The Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat is characterized by inherent depressive-like behaviour, anxiety, cognitive deficits and dysregulated monoaminergic/GABAergic neurotransmission. This study investigated strain-specific differences in learning and memory, affective states and neurochemical responses to Diazepam (DZP), a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAA receptor, in Wistar and WKY rats. Learning and memory were assessed using the novel object recognition (N

Although previous studies have suggested an association between unpleasant sounds and the use of drugs, scientific evidence supporting this is lacking. This study investigated in rats (male Sprague-Dawley rats) if aversive sounds modulate dopamine (DA) transmission in the mesolimbic reward system and cocaine reinforcement. For sound stimulation, we used artificial low-frequency ultrasound (ALFUS) in the frequency ranges (22-38 kHz) which produces an aversive response in rats. Rats displayed increased anxiety-like behaviors, 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), and stress responses with ALFU

Bats face a great risk of dehydration, so sensory mechanisms for water recognition are crucial for their survival. In the laboratory, bats recognized any smooth horizontal surface as water because these provide analogous reflections of echolocation calls. We tested whether bats also approach smooth horizontal surfaces other than water to drink in nature by partly covering watering troughs used by hundreds of bats with a Perspex layer mimicking water. We aimed 1) to confirm that under natural conditions too bats mistake any horizontal smooth surface for water by testing this on large numbers of

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a well-recognized form of inherited mental retardation, caused by a mutation in the fragile X mental retardation 1 (Fmr1) gene. The gene is located on the long arm of the X chromosome and encodes fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP). Absence of FMRP in fragile X patients as well as in Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice results, among other changes, in abnormal dendritic spine formation and altered synaptic plasticity in the neocortex and hippocampus. Clinical features of FXS include cognitive impairment, anxiety, abnormal social interaction, mental retardation, motor co

Perinatal asphyxia is a major cause of immediate and postponed brain damage in the newborn. It may be responsible for several delayed neurologic disorders and, in this respect, early markers of brain injury would be relevant for therapeutic intervention as well as for identification of infants at high risk for developmental disabilities. Biochemical measurements (brain F2-isoprostane levels) and behavioral tests (ultrasonic vocalization pattern on postnatal days (pnd) 5, 8, and 11, spontaneous motor behaviors on pnd 7 and 12, and homing response on pnd 10) were performed in a rat model of glob

Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) learn vocal behavior during sensitive developmental periods, similar to the way in which human language is acquired. As adults, they recite the learned song pattern in a stereotyped manner. Previously, we demonstrated that central nervous system-associated cannabinoid receptors (CB1) are expressed in brain regions known to control both juvenile song learning and adult recitation of song. Here we extend these findings by establishing the zebra finch as a behavioral model to study cannabinoid pharmacology, showing that the cannabinoid agonist WIN55212-2 inhibi

Isolation in a novel test cage elicits ultrasonic vocalization (USV) in 12-13-day-old rat pups, and the presence of an anesthetized littermate companion reduces USV while eliciting body contact. These responses were studied in pups with surgical lesions of trigeminal snout afferents and after olfactory denervation by nasal ZnSO4 perfusion. With lesions of only one system, body contact with the passive companion was reduced by 20%, and interpup orientation was differentially affected by the two types of lesions. However, USV rates were no different from littermate controls in the presence of th

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Glucocorticoids (GC)s are commonly employed to treat vocal fold (VF) pathologies. However, VF atrophy has been associated with intracordal GC injections. Dexamethasone-induced skeletal muscle atrophy is well-documented in other tissues and believed to be mediated by increased muscle proteolysis via upregulation of Muscle Ring Finger (MuRF)-1 and Atrogin-1. Mechanisms of dexamethasone-mediated VF atrophy have not been described. This pilot study employed in vitro and in vivo models to investigate the effects of dexamethasone on VF epithelium, thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle, a

INTRODUCTION: Equine recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) is a naturally occurring model of length-dependent axonopathy characterized by asymmetrical degeneration of recurrent laryngeal nerve axons (RLn). Distal RLn degeneration is marked, but it is unclear whether degeneration extends to include cell bodies (consistent with a neuronopathy).
METHODS: With examiners blinded to RLN severity, brainstem location, and side, we examined correlations between RLN severity (assessed using left distal RLn myelinated axon count) and histopathological features (including chromatolysis and glial responses
