An approach to the management of volvulus of the sigmoid colon.

The colon involved with the sigmoid volvulus is much thicker than the normal colon. It is easy to handle and holds sutures well. Patients who have sigmoid-colon volvulus do not have much faecal loading. Most of the distension is gaseous. In the hands of experienced surgeons primary anastomosis can be done after sigmoid colectomy with safety and excellent results.

Exposing the Barcoding Void: An Integrative Approach to Study Snail-Borne Parasites in a One Health Context.

Trematodes are snail-borne parasites of major zoonotic importance that infect millions of people and animals worldwide and frequently hybridize with closely related species. Therefore, it is desirable to study trematodiases in a One Health framework, where human and animal trematodes are considered equally important. It is within this framework that we set out to study the snail and trematode communities in four artificial lakes and an abattoir in Zimbabwe. Trematode infections in snails were detected through multiplex PCR protocols. Subsequently, we identified snails by sequencing a partial m…

Systemic treatment of AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma: current status and perspectives.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is the most frequent type of cancer in patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). In the western world, its incidence decreased dramatically in the era of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). In contrast, the incidence of KS has been steadily climbing in parallel with the AIDS epidemic in Africa over the past 10-15 years, being the most common cancer in adult men in countries like Uganda and Zimbabwe. AIDS-KS can be diagnosed at any stage of HIV infection, although it more commonly occurs in the setting of severe immune suppression, especially wit…
