Major ABO incompatible BMT in children: determining what residual volume of donor red cells can safely be infused following red cell depletion.

Major ABO incompatible BM transplantation carries a risk of acute haemolysis. Red cell depletion reduces this risk but not all incompatible RBC (iRBCs) are removed and in children the residual volume can be significant relative to body weight. We sought to determine the volume of iRBCs that can be safely given to children. All patients receiving fresh BM from a donor with a major ABO blood group mismatch between January 2000 and July 2013 at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, were included. Seventy-eight patients were identified. The median volume of iRBCs transfused was 1.6 mL/kg (range

Increased incidence of haemolytic disease of the new-born caused by ABO-incompatibility when tetanus toxoid is given during pregnancey.

To determine whether tetanus toxoid given during pregnancy increases the risk of haemolytic disease of the new-born, 818 group O pregnant women were given one to three doses of tetanus toxoid during the third trimester. There was a significant increase in the incidence of neonatal jaundice among the ABO-incompatible infants of women given toxoid, compared to a control group. Comparative studies were also done at two hospitals: tetanus toxoid was not given during pregnancy at one hospital and was used routinely at the other. More of the mothers given toxoid had high titres of IgG anti-A or anti

Impact of Uniform Methods on Interlaboratory Antibody Titration Variability: Antibody Titration and Uniform Methods.

CONTEXT: -Substantial variability between different antibody titration methods prompted development and introduction of uniform methods in 2008. OBJECTIVE: -To determine whether uniform methods consistently decrease interlaboratory variation in proficiency testing. DESIGN: -Proficiency testing data for antibody titration between 2009 and 2013 were obtained from the College of American Pathologists. Each laboratory was supplied plasma and red cells to determine anti-A and anti-D antibody titers by their standard method: gel or tube by uniform or other methods at different testing phases (imme

ABO incompatibility does not affect transfusion requirements or clinical outcomes of unrelated cord blood transplantation after myeloablative conditioning for haematological malignancies.

BACKGROUND: The effects of ABO incompatibility on cord blood transplantation (CBT) have not been confirmed. We retrospectively investigated the effect of ABO incompatibility on the clinical outcomes and changes of isoagglutinin titres of 261 consecutive patients who underwent CBT in a single centre. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied patients with haematological malignancies undergoing unrelated CBT following myeloablative conditioning. There were 80 matched, 72 major mismatched, 72 minor mismatched, and 37 bidirectional mismatched transplants. Risk factors that could potentially influence the

Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943): A Versatile Blood Scientist.

Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) was an Austrian-American biologist, physician, and immunologist whose groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized the fields of transfusion medicine, immunology, and virology. His most famous work was the identification of the ABO blood group system in 1901, which explained the causes of transfusion reactions and laid the foundation for safe blood transfusions. This discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930. Landsteiner continued his research, identifying the MN and P blood group system in 1927 and the Rh blood group system in 1940, which

Symptomatic coccidioidomycosis following a severe natural dust storm. An outbreak at the Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif.

Eighteen newly diagnosed cases of symptomatic cocidioidomycosis developed two to four weeks following exposure to a severe natural dust storm. The population at risk consisted of 26,000 residents of the San Joaquin Valley with access to health care at the Naval Hospital, Lemoore, Calif. Eight patients were white, and ten were nonwhite. The number of cases per 100,000 was estimated to be 36 for the white group and 254 for the nonwhite group. The disease was disseminated in four patients, and all were from the nonwhite group. One patient with disseminated disease, a black man, died. These data s

Outcomes of Highly Urgent ABO-Incompatible Living Donor Liver Transplantation in National Databases.

BACKGROUND: Highly urgent adult living donor liver transplantation (HU-LDLT) is essential for patients with acute liver failure (ALF), acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), and severe cirrhosis who are in life-threatening situations. The results of adult highly urgent ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) remain ambiguous when there is insufficient time to await a compatible organ. This study aimed to compare the results of adult ABOi HU-LDLT with those of adult ABO-compatible (ABOc) HU-LDLT utilizing data from the Korean Network for Organ Sharing (KONOS). METHODS

Prior to ABOi liver transplant with PD-1 inhibitor in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation (LT) is a unique and effective method for treating end-stage liver diseases and acute liver failure, bringing hope to many patients with liver cancer. LT is currently widely used in the treatment of liver diseases. However, there have been no patients with liver cancer who have undergone ABO-incompatible (ABOi) LT after treatment with the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitor reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A patient with liver cancer who received sintilimab injection, an anti-PD1 therapy, before LT was admitted in the transplantatio

Acute Cellular Rejection in ABO-Incompatible Renal Transplant Recipients Receiving Rituximab Is Associated with Delayed-Onset Neutropenia.

BACKGROUND Rituximab induces long-lasting B cell depletion in the peripheral blood and increases the levels of proinflammatory cytokines associated with regulatory B cell depletion. Previous reports showed that B cell-related cytokine release after administration of rituximab may induce acute cellular rejection (ACR) and delayed-onset neutropenia. The present study was conducted to investigate the correlation between acute rejection and delayed-onset neutropenia in ABO-incompatible renal transplant recipients who underwent administration of rituximab for 1 year after transplantation. A case of progressive thrombotic microangiopathy after ABO-incompatible renal transplantation.

A 21-yr-old man of blood type O receiving hemodialysis for IgA nephropathy underwent living-related ABO-incompatible (ABOI) renal transplantation from his mother, whose blood type is A. He was negative for flow cross-match, anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibody, and anti-MICA antibody. Pre-treatment anti-A IgG titer was 1:256. Desensitization consisted of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, methylprednisolone, rituximab, and plasmapheresis. He developed acute antibody rejection at day 2 post-transplant, which was successfully treated. After renal artery reconstruction surgery at day 91 fo

Hemolytic anemia after ABO nonidentical living donor kidney transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: ABO compatible non-identical kidney transplants are used frequently. Acquired hemolytic anemia has been reported after ABO mismatched transplantation. Patients of A, B or AB blood groups may receive organs from ABO-compatible, but non-identical donors, mostly from O blood group donors. It may also occur in patients of the AB blood group who receive a kidney from a donor of the A or B blood groups. PATIENTS AND METHODS: ABO non-identical living donor kidney transplantation was done in 214 cases. All studied patients received kidneys from one haplotype HLA mismatched living donors

Intestinal metaplasia with adherent Helicobacter pylori: a hybrid epithelium with both gastric and intestinal features.

Helicobacter pylori seem to avoid areas of intestinal metaplasia in the gastric mucosa, but attachment of these bacteria to epithelium with the appearance of incomplete intestinal metaplasia has been documented. To characterize the nature of the epithelium to which H pylori was attached, we carried out an immunohistochemical study using monoclonal antibodies against gastric surface mucous cell mucins (M1), blood group-related carbohydrates antigens (Le(a), sialyl Le(a), Le(b), type 1H, and type 2H) and sialyl Tn antigen. The results of this study suggest that these areas of H pylori attachment

Pediatric heart transplantation across ABO blood type barriers: a case study.

Heart transplantation with ABO blood type-incompatible donors has historically been contraindicated because of the high risk of an immediate hyperacute humoral graft rejection. The immature neonatal immune system presents an immunologic window that allows for breaching the ABO barrier before the natural development of anti-ABO antibodies. Information from a small series of neonates has demonstrated similar survival rates and posttransplant outcomes compared to ABO-compatible transplantations. In the posttransplant period, particular attention is placed on the surveillance of graft-specific ant

Safety and impact of donor-type red blood cell transfusion before allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation with major ABO mismatch.

BACKGROUND: Changes within the ABO system are regularly observed phenomena in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation (PBPCT). Major ABO mismatch can lead to different clinical problems including acute hemolysis after infusion of the allograft, delay of red blood cell (RBC) engraftment, or even manifestation of pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This retrospective study demonstrates the safety and the impact of donor-type RBC transfusion before allogeneic PBPCT in major ABO settings as routinely performed at our tr
