Biological factors contributing to divergent cortical abnormalities in adolescent and adult psychiatric disorders.

Cortical morphological alteration patterns differ between adolescent and adult psychiatric disorders. However, the biological factors contributing to the divergence are unclear. Cortical thickness (CT) alterations in adolescents and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were derived from the ENIGMA. We examined whether the structural connectome constrains disease-related CT alterations, followed by identifying likely epicenter regions and testing the hub vulnerability hypothes

Impact of supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids after maternal dietary deficiency on adolescent anxiety and microglial morphology.

Dietary maternal deficiency in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) is a potential risk factor for the development of anxiety and other mood disorders in children and adolescents. Here, we used a previously characterized maternal n-3 PUFA dietary deficiency model in rats to determine the impact of postweaning supplementation on adolescent anxiety-like behaviors. We focused on two models of anxiety: innate anxiety tested by the elevated plus maze and a novel operant model of learned anxiety where animals learn that actions may be associated with a variable probability of harm. Tyrosine hydroxylase expression and neuronal loss in the male and female adolescent ventral tegmental area.

Adolescence is a critical period of development characterized by numerous behavioral and neuroanatomical changes. While studies of adolescent neurodevelopment typically compare adolescent age groups with young adults, there are fewer studies that assess developmental trajectories within the adolescent period. In the adolescent prefrontal cortex, some maturational changes take place linearly/chronologically, while others are associated specifically with pubertal onset. The adolescent ventral tegmental area (VTA), a primary source of forebrain dopamine, is relatively understudied during this per

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in mothers and adolescents after the Wenchuan earthquake: A cross-sectional and longitudinal network analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study used network analysis to investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal network between PTSD symptoms within mother-adolescent dyads at 12 and 18 months after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. METHODS: The sample was from the Wenchuan Earthquake Adolescent Health Cohort. 399 mother-adolescent dyads completed the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Self-Rating Scale at 12 and 18 months after the earthquake. We assessed central symptoms (those with the most significant influence on other symptoms) and bridge symptoms (symptoms connecting different communities) in contemporary netw

Comparing behavior following binge ethanol in adolescent and adult DBA/2 J mice.

The adolescent brain undergoes maturation in areas critically involved in reward, addiction, and memory. Adolescents consume alcohol more than any other drug, typically in a binge-like manner. While adults also binge on alcohol, the adolescent brain is more susceptible to ethanol-related damages due to its ongoing development, which may result in persistent behavioral and physical changes, including differences in myelination in the frontal cortex. Sex also impacts ethanol metabolism and addiction progression, suggesting females are more sensitive than males. This study addressed memory, socia

Phase locking of event-related oscillations is decreased in both young adult humans and rats with a history of adolescent alcohol exposure.

Alcohol exposure typically begins in adolescence, and frequent binge drinking has been associated with health risk behaviors including alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Few studies have documented the effects of a history of adolescent binge drinking on neurophysiological consequences in young adulthood. Synchrony of phase (phase locking (PL)) of event-related oscillations (EROs) within and between different brain areas reflects communication exchange between neural networks and is a sensitive measure of adolescent development in both rats and humans, and thus may be a good translational measure o…

Transient upregulation of immune activity induced by adolescent social stress is involved in cognitive deficit in adult male mice and early intervention with minocycline.

Increasing evidence shows that the developmental perturbation of immune activity can lead to long-lasting neurodevelopmental and behavioral abnormalities. In our previous study, we found that deficiencies of microglia and TNFα in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) were involved in the impairment of cognitive flexibility induced by adolescent social stress in adult mice. It remains unclear how and when immune changes occur following adolescent stress exposure and whether it is possible to prevent the delayed occurrence of cognitive impairment through early immune intervention. Firstly, the pre

Impaired fear memory extinction during adolescence is accompanied by the depressive-like behaviors.

Fear is the emotion that is best understood in terms of brain mechanisms. And the management of fear memories is important when facing mental health disorders such as post-traumatic stress. Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological human development and the ability to deal with the fear memory in adolescence may be a potent factor for developing mental disorders in adulthood. However, little is known about the direct relationship between the ability to deal with the fear memory and appearance of depressive-like behaviors. To assess this, we used a model of associative l

Updated Criteria for Fusion Level Selection in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Including Use of Three-Dimensional Analysis.

The development of new technologies and an enhanced understanding of the three-dimensional deformity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis has led to advances in surgical management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Posterior spinal approaches with pedicle screw constructs are now standard of care because they allow for powerful rotation maneuvers with three-column deformity correction. Selective fusion of the main curve while allowing for spontaneous correction of compensatory curves should be attempted whenever possible in the interest of limiting fusion size and preserving spinal mobility. Dealing With Uncertainty: Testing Risk- and Ambiguity-Attitude Across Adolescence.

Attitudes to risk (known probabilities) and attitudes to ambiguity (unknown probabilities) are separate constructs that influence decision making, but their development across adolescence remains elusive. We administered a choice task to a wide adolescent age-range (N = 157, 10-25 years) to disentangle risk- and ambiguity-attitudes using a model-based approach. Additionally, this task was played in a social context, presenting choices from a high risk-taking peer. We observed age-related changes in ambiguity-attitude, but not risk-attitude. Also, ambiguity-aversion was negatively related to re

Cutaneous malignancy in adolescents.

There is compelling epidemiologic evidence that cutaneous malignancies, most notably malignant melanoma and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, are increasing in incidence. The adolescent population is also affected by this rise in incidence, but can represent both a unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Herein we present up-to-date epidemiology, clinical presentation, risk factors for development, and management options for malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma as each pertains to the adolescent population. Prevention in this age group

Mammary masses in the adolescent female.

Disease of the breast is uncommon in the adolescent female. Of 25,650 surgical specimens examined at The Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago from 1974 through 1985, only 40 lesions were of adolescent breast origin in females. The ages of the patients ranged from 12 to 22 years. The most common lesion was fibroadenoma (19) followed by gigantomastia and cystosarcoma phyllodes. A malignant lesion is rare in this age group and both instances in this series had predisposing factors (for example, prior regional radiation in childhood). The findings of this study, plus that of the literature revi

Thoracic morphological characteristics of primary spontaneous pneumothorax patients requiring surgical intervention.

BACKGROUND: Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is a condition commonly observed in adolescents, often associated with physical characteristics such as tall stature, low body weight, and a flat thoracic cage. However, the relationship between thoracic morphology and the development of PSP remains unclear. This study aimed to compare thoracic parameters between adolescent PSP patients and healthy controls and to identify potential thoracic risk factors for PSP. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted, including adolescent males aged 13-19 years who underwent surgery for PS

Analysis of sagittal alignment in thoracic and thoracolumbar curves in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: how do these two curve types differ?

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review and radiographic analysis. OBJECTIVE: To determine if differences exist in the sagittal alignment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients with thoracic versus thoracolumbar curve patterns. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Relative anterior overgrowth has been suggested as the possible pathomechanism behind thoracic scoliosis. Given the proposed importance of the sagittal alignment on the development of AIS and the known association between pelvic parameters and sagittal alignment, the authors postulate that pelvic incidence may influence the loca

Adolescent drinking causes a loss of aspartoacylase-expressing oligodendrocytes and hypomyelination of anterior cingulate and corpus callosum axons in male mice, but not females.

Adolescent binge drinking is a strong predictor of alcohol use disorder and related mental health outcomes in adulthood, which may be due to disruptions in myelination during this dynamic period of brain development. White matter expansion in frontal regions during adolescence is essential for mature decision-making and stress regulation, yet the cellular mechanisms by which alcohol disrupts this process remain poorly understood. We used multi-label immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy to visualize proteins in oligodendrocyte lineage cells and myelin ensheathment of axons in the anterior

A nociceptive stress model of adolescent physical abuse induces contextual fear and cingulate nociceptive neuroplasticities.

Adolescent physical abuse impairs emotional development and evokes cingulate pathologies, but its neuronal and circuit substrates are unknown. Conditioning adolescent rabbits with noxious colorectal distension for only 2 h over 3 weeks simulated the human child abuse in amplitude, frequency, and duration. Thermal withdrawal thresholds were unchanged suggesting that sensitized spinal mechanisms may not be operable. Unchanged weight, stools, colorectal histology, and no evidence of abdominal pain argue against tissue injury or irritable bowel syndrome. Contextual fear was amplified as they avoid

Longitudinal Reciprocal Relationships Between Discrimination and Ethnic Affect or Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese American Adolescents.

Discrimination plays an important role in the development of ethnic minority adolescents. However, previous studies have often adopted a unidirectional model examining the influence of discrimination on adolescent development, thus leaving the potential reciprocal relationship between them understudied. Moreover, there is a dearth of studies on Chinese Americans in the discrimination literature. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the reciprocal relationships between discrimination and two measures of adolescent outcomes (i.e., ethnic affect and depressive symptoms) from early adolescence t…

Deconstructing Methodological Paradigms in Adolescent Gambling Research: a Critical Analysis and Future Directions.

Four years after Delfabbro & King's (2021) foundational critique, adolescent gambling research continues to struggle with fundamental validity questions. Through a critical narrative review synthesizing literature from 2022 to 2025, we evaluate the field's progress in addressing their core contentions regarding measurement validity, causal inference, and longitudinal evidence. Our analysis reveals persistent epistemological tensions between epidemiological and developmental approaches. The review identifies a validity problem in adolescent gambling assessment: instruments adapted from adult po

Support-seeking about social relationships with friends is associated with friendship quality, emotional support, and self-disclosure in adolescence.

Adolescent friendships offer a crucial context for learning to seek social support. Through repeated social support encounters, adolescents take in social information and shape their own development. The current study characterizes adolescents' support-seeking discussion topics with close friends, how the topics are influenced by adolescent age and gender, and how they are related to interpersonal processes in close friendships. A community sample of 184 adolescents (85 boys, 99 girls; 58% white, 29% Black, 13% other identity groups) participated annually from age 13 to 18. Through these six w

Family Characteristics, Transgender Identity and Emotional Symptoms in Adolescence: A Population Survey Study.

Sociodemographic and psychosocial family factors have profound implications for adolescent development, identity formation and mental health during the adolescent years. We explored the associations of sociodemographic and psychosocial family factors with transgender identity in adolescence and the role of these factors in the associations between gender identity and emotional disorders. Data from a large adolescent population survey from Finland were analysed using logistic regression models. Reporting transgender identity was associated with mother's low level of education, accumulating fami…
