Antibodies to neuronal targets in neurological and psychiatric diseases.

The role of antibodies to specific neuronal and muscle ion channels in the etiology of neuromuscular transmission disorders is now well accepted. In addition, maternal antibodies can cross the placenta and cause neonatal disease or even alter the development of the infant, raising the possibility that some neurodevelopmental conditions could be caused by maternal antibodies. Voltage-gated ion channels are expressed in the brain as well as at the neuromuscular junction, and in recent years it has become clear that antibodies to some central nervous system (CNS) channels can be associated with C

Akabane disease in cattle: congenital abnormalities caused by viral infection. Experimental disease.

Nonpurulent encephalomyelitis and polymyositis were primary lesions of cattle and goats experimentally infected with Akabane virus. Two caprine fetuses, two months old, were infected placentally and examined 11 days after inoculation; twin caprine fetuses, three months old, were inoculated intramuscularly through the dam's uterus and examined nine days after inoculation. Both lesions were seen in each fetus. Reactive proliferation of immature endothelial cells was a significant encephalitic change. Myositic changes included parenchymal degeneration and cell infiltration in fetuses in the myotu

Teratological hip dislocation.

The hallmark of teratological congenital hip dislocation is its advanced severity at birth, signifying longer antenatal duration and accentuation of distortion. There may be contributions from a multiplicity of unrelated syndromes, such as local intrauterine factors, failure of proper formations early in the embryonic period, or genetically determined disorders. Treatment is generally difficult and the end result is uncertain.

Sheep abortions associated with Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii infections in multiple flocks from Southern Brazil.

Neosporosis and toxoplasmosis are important parasitic causes of abortions in small ruminants. This study verified the occurrence of these di … respectively. Macroscopically, neosporosis abortions exhibited fetal mummification, maceration, and arthrogryposis. Toxoplasmosis abortions showed fetal mummification and maceration. The neosporosis abortions included lymphoplasmacytic myositis (70%; 7/10) and myocarditis (60%; 6/10), in addition to necrotizing encephalitis and gliosis (50%; 5/10). Toxoplasmosis …

Eye-tracking visual patterns of sonographers with and without fetal motor assessment expertise.

OBJECTIVES: Fetal motor assessment (FMA) in addition to structural anomaly scan enhances prenatal detection of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC). In the Amsterdam UMC, sonographers are trained to perform FMA. We examined the effect of motor assessment training by comparing sonographers with (SMA) and without this training (S) on their qualitative motor assessment in fetuses with normal (FNM) and abnormal motility (FAM) and their visual processing by eye-tracking. METHODS: The study was performed from 2019 to 2020. Five SMA and five S observed five FNM and five FAM videos. Qualitative F…

Correction of a Complex Foot Deformity With V and Y Osteotomy and Ilizarov Method.

Many authors consider the Ilizarov method as the best choice for correction of complex multiplanar foot deformities. Fifty-one patients, for a total of 55 feet, underwent V or Y osteotomy (respectively 32 and 23), 12 were due to congenital clubfoot outcomes, 11 were from post-traumatic pathologies, 9 from hemimelia, 7 from Charcot-Marie-Tooth, 5 from poliomyelitis, 3 from spina bifida, 2 from myopathy, 2 from poly-epiphyseal dysplasia, 1 from achondroplasia, 1 from arthrogryposis, 1 patient from Charcot's foot and 1 rheumatoid arthritis. All patients were contacted to undergo AOFAS and EQ-5D-5…

One-stage release by double surgical approach for neglected congenital vertical talus: results in a series of walking children in Tanzania.

Congenital vertical talus is an uncommon rigid flatfoot deformity present at birth, producing pain and disability if untreated. This study r … en 2 and 4 years. In two children, the deformity was idiopathic, in two it was associated to distal arthrogryposis and in one to Larsen syndrome. The surgical procedure was performed through a posteromedial and a lateral incision and included extensive soft tissue release and reduction of talo-navicular and subtalar joint, pinned with percutaneous Kirschner wire …

All infants had an abnormal neurological exam, and 18 (20.7%) had arthrogryposis. Mutations in Subunits of the Activating Signal Cointegrator 1 Complex Are Associated with Prenatal Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Congenital Bone Fractures.

Transcriptional signal cointegrators associate with transcription factors or nuclear receptors and coregulate tissue-specific gene transcription. We report on recessive loss-of-function mutations in two genes (TRIP4 and ASCC1) that encode subunits of the nuclear activating signal cointegrator 1 (ASC-1) complex. We used autozygosity mapping and whole-exome sequencing to search for pathogenic mutations in four families. Affected individuals presented with prenatal-onset spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), multiple congenital contractures (arthrogryposis multiplex congenita), respiratory distress, and…

A novel TNNI2 mutation causes Freeman-Sheldon syndrome in a Chinese family with an affected adult with only facial contractures.

Distal arthrogryposes (DAs), a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by congenital contractures with predominant involvement of the hands and feet, can be classified into at least 12 different forms. These autosomal dominant disorders are of variable expressivity and reduced penetrance. Mutations in sarcomeric protein genes, including troponin I2 (TNNI2), troponin T3 (TNNT3), tropomyosin 2 (TPM2), embryonic myosin heavy chain 3 (MYH3), and myosin binding protein C1 (MYBPC1), have been identified in distal arthrogryposis type 1 (DA1, MIM 108120), type 2B (DA2…

Clinical characteristics and VPS33B mutations in patients with ARC syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: ARC (arthrogryposis, renal dysfunction, and cholestasis) syndrome is a rare, fatal cause of neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis without known treatment modalities and has recently been ascribed to a mutation in the VPS33B gene. We assessed the clinical characteristics and investigated the VPS33B mutations in Korean patients with ARC syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 6 patients with ARC syndrome among 90 patients with neonatal cholestasis from 2000 to 2005 and assessed the relative incidence rate ratio, clinical symptoms, laboratory findings, and path…

PURPOSE: To present a case of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome (FSS) with a previously unreported technique of anesthetic management, consisting of a malignant hyperthermia free anesthetic and laryngeal mask airway. CLINICAL FEATURES: Freeman-Sheldon syndrome (also known as whistling face syndrome, Windmill-Vane-Hand syndrome, cranio-carpo-tarsal dysplasia and distal arthrogryposis type 2) is a rare congenital disorder defined by facial and skeletal abnormalities. The three basic abnormalities are microstomia with pouting lips, camptodactyly with ulnar deviation of the fingers and talipes equinovarus…
