Boar semen improvement through sperm capacitation management, with emphasis on zinc ion homeostasis.

Critical to fertilization success, sperm capacitation within the female oviductal sperm reservoir endows mammalian spermatozoa with hyperactivated motility and capacity to fertilize. An elaborate cascade of signaling events during capacitation guides the redistribution of sperm plasma membrane seminolipid and cholesterol, Ca-influx and increases tyrosine phosphorylation to promote hyperactivated motility. Such events result in the remodeling of the sperm acrosome, increased fluidity and fusability of the plasma membrane, shedding of surface-adsorbed seminal plasma proteins that glue sperm head

Carbon fibre based flexible piezoresistive composites to empower inherent sensing capabilities for soft actuators.

New materials and technologies in sensing and actuation have led to the development of soft actuators and robots for biomedical systems, assistive devices, exploration and rescue. The use of integrated actuation-sensing materials in such systems is gaining interest, but there are few examples where the body of the actuator or soft robot acts as the sensing element. The development of smart soft actuators that have inherent sensing capabilities can provide advantages of high sensitivity, ease of manufacture and cost efficiency, without impairing actuator dynamics. To achieve this goal, we have

Computational Drug Repositioning with Random Walk on a Heterogeneous Network.

Drug repositioning is an efficient and promising strategy to identify new indications for existing drugs, which can improve the productivity of traditional drug discovery and development. Rapid advances in high-throughput technologies have generated various types of biomedical data over the past decades, which lay the foundations for furthering the development of computational drug repositioning approaches. Although many researches have tried to improve the repositioning accuracy by integrating information from multiple sources and different levels, it is still appealing to further investigate

Marine macromolecules cross-linked hydrogel scaffolds as physiochemically and biologically favorable entities for tissue engineering applications.

Marine biopolymer composite materials provide a technological platform for launching biomedical applications. Biomaterials demand good biocompatibility without the possibility of inflammation or foreign body reactions. In this study, we prepared two biocomposite hydrogels namely; HAC (hydroxyapatite, alginate & chitosan) and HACF (hydroxyapatite, alginate, chitosan & fucoidan) followed by calcium chloride cross linking. The prepared scaffolds were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Porosity measurement, swelling, biodegradation, hemolysis

Semisynthetic hydrophilic polyals.

Non-bioadhesive, fully biodegradable soluble polymers would be very instrumental in advanced biomedical applications, such as gene and drug delivery and tissue engineering. However, rational development of such materials is hindered by the complexity of macromolecule interactions with biological milieu. The prevalence of carbohydrates in naturally occurring interface structures suggests an alternative, biomimetic approach. Interface carbohydrates, regardless of their biological function, have common non-signaling substructures (e.g., acetal and ketal groups, secondary and primary alcohols). We

Vaccine technology: looking to the future.

The impact of vaccination on the health of the world's peoples has been considerable. With the possible exception of clean water, no other development has had such a major effect on the reduction of mortality and on population growth. During the last 200 years, vaccination has controlled nine major diseases and has led to the eradication of one, ie smallpox. However, in many instances the exact mechanisms of successful vaccines are not fully understood. Almost all of the vaccines in use today are of three types: live attenuated micro-organisms, inactivated whole micro-organisms, or split or su

Feasibility of in-home monitoring for people with glaucoma: the I-TRAC mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a chronic disease of the optic nerve and a leading cause of severe visual loss in the UK. Once patients have been diagnosed, they need regular monitoring at hospital eye services. Recent advances in technology mean patients with glaucoma can now monitor their disease at home. This could be more convenient for patients and potentially reduce costs and increase capacity for the NHS. However, it is uncertain whether self-monitoring would be acceptable or possible for patients with glaucoma. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to: identify which patients are most appropriate f

Early cost-utility analysis of tissue-engineered heart valves compared to bioprostheses in the aortic position in elderly patients.

OBJECTIVES: Aortic valve disease is the most frequent indication for heart valve replacement with the highest prevalence in elderly. Tissue-engineered heart valves (TEHV) are foreseen to have important advantages over currently used bioprosthetic heart valve substitutes, most importantly reducing valve degeneration with subsequent reduction of re-intervention. We performed early Health Technology Assessment of hypothetical TEHV in elderly patients (≥ 70 years) requiring surgical (SAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) to assess the potential of TEHV and to inform future develo

Discrepancies and priorities in staging and restaging malignant lymphoma by SPET, SPET/CT, PET/CT and PET/MRI.

Due to the rapid development of modern imaging methods and also of medical oncology, there has been a significant progress in diagnosis and treatment of malignant lymphomas in the last few years. Nuclear medicine (NM) imaging methods gained new perspectives via the so called hybrid technologies-single-photon emission tomography combined with computed tomography (SPET/CT), positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) and recently even positron emission tomography combined with magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI), which have led to a better image quality and diagnosti

Rituximab for the first-line treatment of stage III/IV follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

This paper presents a summary of the evidence review group (ERG) report into the clinical and cost-effectiveness of rituximab for the first-line treatment of stage III/IV follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (FNHL) based upon the manufacturer's submission to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as part of the single technology appraisal (STA) process. The manufacturer's scope restricts the intervention to rituximab in combination with CVP (cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisolone) (R-CVP); the only comparator used was CVP alone. The evidence from the one included

Assessment of a clinical checklist in the diagnosis of fragile X syndrome in India.

Fragile X syndrome (FRAXA) is one of the most common forms of mental retardation. It is caused by the expansion of cytosine-guanine-guanine (CGG) repeats in the 5' untranslated region of the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene, located at Xq27.3. The number of CGG repeats in the FMR1 gene occurs in four distinct ranges: 2-50 (normal), 50-60 (gray zone), 60-200 (premutation), and > 200 (full mutation). When the number of CGG repeats exceeds 200, the gene becomes hypermethylated and transcriptionally silenced, which results in the loss of FMR protein and causes FRAXA. The key clinical fea
