Equinovarus deformity of the foot is a result of the muscles imbalance in which inventors of the foot, mostly posterior and anterior tibialis muscle, overpower evertors. In children with cerebral palsy untreated spastic equinovarus deformity may cause severe fixed foot deformity and painful callosities under metatarsal heads and on the lateral side of the foot. The gait pattern becomes less effective and needs more energy. The study group consisted of 154 children with cerebral palsy treated in our Clinic by the multilevel soft tissue surgery. For foot problems 136 children needed surgical int

BACKGROUND: The treatment of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia remains difficult and controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of a technique consisting of excision of the pseudarthrosis, autologous bone-grafting, and insertion of a Williams intramedullary rod into the tibia.
METHODS: Twenty-one consecutive patients with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia were managed with this technique between 1978 and 1999, and the results were retrospectively reviewed. The mean age of the patients at the time of the latest follow-up was 17.2 years (range, seve

UNLABELLED: Hindfoot stabilization can be obtained by an isolated talonavicular arthrodesis as well as a triple arthrodesis.
MATERIAL: There were 27 cases of unstable neurological foot, 13 cases of Rhumatoid foot, 7 cases of flat feet and 3 cases of post-trauma arthritis of the talonavicular joint. The procedure was, in all cases, a talonavicular arthrodesis, associated in some cases to a lengthening of the Achilles tendon, tendon transfer and forefoot correction.
METHOD: 50 cases were reviewed with a mean follow-up of 40 months.
RESULTS: There were 18 per cent cases of non-union. This coul

BACKGROUND: The perpendicular plate of ethmoid (PPE) was used to correct short noses in rhinoplasty in Asians, but the safe harvest of the plate and the assessment of its clinical application has been perplexing to plastic surgeons.
AIMS: To explore how to safely cut the perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone and evaluate its application effect.
PATIENTS/METHODS: A finite element model was established to guide the clinical operation. A total of 30 patients with short noses were selected. Among them, 15 patients used autologous septal cartilage to lengthen the nasal tip, and 15 patients used the

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), a prevalent congenital anomaly, is characterized by the backward bending of the hindfoot, the inward turning of the midfoot, and the turning or tilting of the front foot. The likelihood of experiencing clubfoot is higher in males and among firstborn offspring. Both genetic and environmental elements are recognized as factors that play a role in the occurrence of this developmental irregularity. It is diagnosed clinically because the abnormality has been visible since childhood, where one or both feet point downward and inward. If the deformity is not addr

INTRODUCTION: Talipes equinovarus or clubfoot is a congenital deformity of the foot with bone, muscle, and tendon involvement. It's one of the most frequent foot malformations in pediatric orthopedics. Although generally idiopathic, it may have a syndromic cause and be associated with musculoskeletal, neurological, or connective tissue conditions. The treatment of choice in idiopathic clubfoot is the Ponseti method based on manipulation and fixation with serial casts that seek progressive correction of the deformity. The Ponseti method effectiveness has been demonstrated in arthrogryposis and

Transformations in morphology, physiology and behaviour along the mammalian stem lineage were accompanied by profound modifications to reproduction and growth, including the emergence of a reproductive strategy characterized by high maternal investment in a small number of offspring1,2 and heterochronic changes in early cranial development associated with the enlargement of the brain3. Because direct fossil evidence of these transitions is lacking, the timing and sequence of these modifications are unknown. Here we present what is, to our knowledge, the first fossil record of pre- or near-hatc

Modification of low density lipoprotein (LDL), eg, by oxidation, has been proposed as being important for the formation of foam cells and therefore for the development of atherosclerotic plaques. There are a number of reports showing that macrophage-derived foam cells can proliferate in both human and animal lesions, particularly in the early phase of the disease and possibly involving macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF, or CSF-1). We studied the in vitro effects of oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) on murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs), a cell population with a high proliferative capa

Motility of the upper extremities is the sum of movements of an open kinematic chain made up of the hands and the lower and upper arms in the humero-scapular joints which are integrated in the closed kinematic chains of the bilateral symmetrical shoulder girdles. Each shoulder girdle assembles three kinematic links (scapula, clavicle, hemithorax), with three joints (sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, thoraco-scapular), creating a three-bar linkage. This linkage may be characterized as an effective transformer of motion with 11 degrees of freedom ensuring wide ranges of motions. This motion-t

Septicaemia resulting from meningococcal infection is a devastating illness affecting children. Those who survive can develop late orthopaedic sequelae from growth plate arrests, with resultant complex deformities. Our aim in this study was to review the case histories of a series of patients with late orthopaedic sequelae, all treated by the senior author (CFB). We also describe a treatment strategy to address the multiple deformities that may occur in these patients. Between 1997 and 2009, ten patients (seven girls and three boys) were treated for late orthopaedic sequelae following meningoc

Idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip is characterized by the destruction of the articular cartilage due to an unknown cause, principally affecting women during adolescence and producing premature degeneration of the hip. Twelve cases (11 patients) were reviewed at our hospital, with an average follow-up period of 13.2 years, during which a clinical and radiologic study was performed. Despite the treatment implemented, idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip causes progressive degeneration of the joint with the appearance of almost constant pain, stiffness, and anomalous positions. Radiologic studies

OBJECTIVES: An adequate understanding of the evolution of the larynx presumably clarify the physiology and functional histoanatomy of the present-day human organ. This study investigated the comparative histoanatomy of the epiglottis and preepiglottic space of the lemur larynx (a non-human primate without vocal tract).
METHODS: Two normal adult ring-tailed lemur larynges obtained from natural death were investigated. The whole organ serial section technique was employed.
RESULTS: The histologic structures of the lemur epiglottis and preepiglottic space differed considerably from that of huma

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Distal femoral growth plate fracture is one of the most common growth plate fractures in the pediatric age, and associated with growth disturbance risk. Consequences that may arise are hindered growth, irreversible decrease in range of motion, instability, angular deformity and neurovascular issues. Fractures of the lateral condyle show a higher risk of developing sequelae compared to the medial side.
CASE PRESENTATION: Corrective osteotomy of the distal femur was performed in patient with history of femoral fracture which undergone an ORIF procedure for the shaft

This paper presents the outcomes of a conservative approach to greenstick condylar fracture treatment in a child. Serial changes of the inclination angle were measured in a greenstick fracture of the mandibular subcondyle treated with intermaxillary fixation (IMF).A 7-year-old girl presented with the complaint of pain on her chin. She had fallen from a 3-m height and hit her face on the floor. She had limited mouth-opening of one finger breadth. Panoramic radiography and computed tomography confirmed a green-stick (incomplete) fracture of the right condyle, in which the lateral side of the bon

Insertional Achilles tendinopathy is a common pathology that may be resistant to conservative treatment requiring surgical intervention. Treatment often involves partial to complete detachment of the Achilles tendon, debridement, and reattachment. Although 50% of the tendon may be safely resected without significantly compromising strength, the addition of a lengthening procedure requires further reinforcement. We conducted a retrospective review of 43 procedures comparing outcomes of 16 single suture anchor procedures with 27 transosseous fixation procedures for reattachment of the Achilles.

Condylar hyperplasia is the excessive unilateral growth of mandibular leading to facial asymmetry, occlusal disturbance, joint pain and dysfunction. The aim of this study is to evaluate the histological presence of temporomandibular joint in model of condylar hyperplasia by lengthening unilateral condylar neck of distraction osteogenesis. An extra oral distractor was employed to achieve unilateral condylar neck distraction (1·0 mm daily for 7 days). The experimental condylar necks were elongated by 7 mm compared to the contralateral. Eleven adult white rabbits were used. Eight rabbits were, re
