BLOOD CALCIUM DISTRIBUTION IN ANAPHYLAXIS IN THE GUINEA PIG.

The results above reported for total calcium and the membrane-diffusible fraction in the serum of the guinea pig, taken at various intervals during anaphylactic shock, confirm the findings of previous workers that the total calcium is essentially unchanged. There is, however, the further finding that the diffusible fraction is considerably increased over that found for the animal similarly treated but not manifesting characteristic symptoms.

THE INFLUENCE OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE UPON EXPERIMENTAL BOTULISM.

1. Calcium chloride given subcutaneously, intraperitoneally, or intravenously has been found to have no effect upon the production of botulism following the injection of Bacillus botulinus (Strain 80B) into the peritoneal cavity of guinea pigs. 2. Treatment of Bacillus botulinus with alcohol has been found markedly to decrease its toxicity for guinea pigs. This is in conformity with the work of Bronfenbrenner and Schlesinger. 3. Toxin-free spores of Bacillus botulinus have been found pathogenic for guinea pigs. 4. No prejudice as to possible results in rabbits should be based upon the above co…

ON THE RELATION OF TETANY TO THE PARATHYROID GLANDS AND TO CALCIUM METABOLISM.

1. Tetany occurs spontaneously in many forms and may also be produced by the destruction of the parathyroid glands. Recent researches tend t … nimal to the veins of a normal one. 7. Numerous researches have shown the important relation of the calcium salts to the excitability of the central nervous system. Their withdrawal leaves the nerve cells in a state of hyperexcitability which can be made to disappear by supplying them with a solution of a calcium salt. 8. Tetany may be regarded as an expr …

Animal models for calcium oxalate kidney stone research.

Calcium oxalate (CaOx) stones are the most prevalent form of nephrolithiasis and are characterized by a substantial risk of recurrence. Their pathogenesis arises through distinct etiological pathways, including idiopathic metabolic susceptibility, monogenic disorders such as primary hyperoxaluria, enteric hyperoxaluria, and toxicant-associated injury, and is shaped by two primary papillary mechanisms: Randall's plaque formation and ductal plugging. A central translational limitation is that most experimental systems, particularly chemically induced rodent models, rely on acute hyperoxaluria. T…

Calcium-Sensing Receptor Regulation of Gastrointestinal Hormone Secretion.

The interaction of dietary nutrients with chemoreceptors in the gastrointestinal tract after a meal stimulates the secretion of gut hormones, which trigger the key processes of digestion and absorption, and also regulate energy intake and postprandial glycemia. One of these receptors, first recognized for its capacity to gauge extracellular calcium (Ca2+), is the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR). Subsequent to its cloning, the CaSR was found to sense not only Ca2+, but also L-amino acids (AAs) and, based on solved protein structures, distinct binding sites have been reported for Ca2+ ions and t…

Calcium Reshapes Aβ Aggregation at Anionic Lipid Membranes.

Dysregulated calcium homeostasis is a hallmark of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), the aggregation of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides at neuronal membranes is shown to be modulated by the presence of Ca2+ ions, yet the molecular mechanism by which Ca2+ reshapes Aβ aggregation at anionic membrane surfaces remains poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we employed coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the aggregation of the model amyloidogenic K16LVFFAE22 fragment of Aβ (Aβ16-22), o…

Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter Regulates ITAM-Dependent Platelet Activation.

BACKGROUND: Platelet activation relies on changes in cytoplasmic calcium flux. However, little is known about the role mitochondrial calcium flux plays in platelet activation. Activation induces release of calcium from intracellular stores, which enters the mitochondrial matrix through the MCU (mitochondrial calcium uniporter) to regulate bioenergetics and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, as demonstrated in other cells. However, whether MCU contributes to platelet function is unclear. METHODS: We generated platelet-specific Mcu-deficient mice (Mcuplt-/-) and compared them to littermat…

Calcium Alginate Aerogel-MIL160 Nanocomposites for CO2 Removal.

Using MOFs in powder form leads to mass transfer limitations and large pressure drops in packed bed adsorbers. Use of MOF/aerogel composites (called MOFACs) in bead form could overcome these challenges without compromising the MOF's adsorption performance, as observed with other shaping methods, such as the use of polymeric binders. In this study, Ca-alginate-aerogel-MIL-160(Al) MOFACs (AlgMIL160) were prepared via sol/gel-assisted direct mixing methods, followed by supercritical drying. The gas sorption, powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and scanning electron microscopy characterization results

Arene Activation by Calcium Hydride/Zinc Amide Equilibration.

The β-diketiminato calcium hydride, [(BDI)CaH]2 (BDI = HC{(Me)CNDipp}2, where Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3), reacts with [Zn{N(SiMe3)2}2] and [Zn(TMP)2] (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) to provide labile species and complex equilibria with a degree of commonality in ultimately providing the products of calcium to zinc β-diketiminate transmetalation. The silazide system provides the known [(BDI)Ca{N(SiMe3)2}] and the heterobimetallic, [(BDI)Ca{N(SiMe3)2}(μ-H)Zn]2, as a viable instrument for ligand transfer to yield [(BDI)ZnH] as the final reaction product. In contrast, the TMP-derived system evide…

Tmem45b modulates itch via endoplasmic reticulum calcium regulation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the role of Tmem45b, a gene expressed in itch-associated Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, in t … ated using both atopic dermatitis-like and dry skin-like mouse models. To investigate intracellular calcium dynamics, calcium imaging was performed on dissociated DRG neurons. Additionally, bulk RNA-seq was conducted on DRG from Tmem45b cKO mice to assess transcriptomic changes. Serca1 expression and the calcium storage capacity of the endoplasmic reticul …

Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease (chondrocalcinosis): a review.

Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease (CPPD) is a metabolic arthropathy characterized by gross calcium pyrophosphate crystals deposition within articular cartilage, in the periarticular and articular tissues. The disease is also called by other names such as pseudogout or chondrocalcinosis. Deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals provokes an inflammation within the synovial membrane followed by degenerative changes in cartilage and bone. The underlying mechanism for increased intraarticular accumulation of calcium crystals is not known. CPPD is fairly common conditi…
