The global burden, risk and inequality of maternal obstructed labor and uterine rupture from 1990 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Obstructed labor (OL) and uterine rupture (UR) are common obstetric complications. This study explored the burden, risk factors, decomposition, and health inequalities associated with OL and UR to improve global maternal health. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analysis study including data on OL and UR from the Global Burden of Diseases, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. The main outcome measures included the number and age-standardized rate (ASR) of incidence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), prevalence, and deaths. RESULTS: The global burden of OL and UR has decline

Mapping global zoonotic niche and interregional transmission risk of monkeypox: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of monkeypox have been ongoing in non-endemic countries since May 2022. A thorough assessment of its global zoonotic niche and potential transmission risk is lacking. METHODS: We established an integrated database on global monkeypox virus (MPXV) occurrence during 1958 - 2022. Phylogenetic analysis was performed to examine the evolution of MPXV and effective reproductive number (Rt) was estimated over time to examine the dynamic of MPXV transmissibility. The potential ecological drivers of zoonotic transmission and inter-regional transmission risks of MPXV were examined.

Chronic epididymitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis LGV-L2 in an HIV-negative heterosexual patient: a case report.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen and the leading bacterial cause of sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Chlamydia trachomatis genovars L1-L3 are responsible for lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), an invasive sexually transmitted disease endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, South America, the Caribbean, India and South East Asia. The typical signs and symptoms of C. trachomatis LGV urogenital infections in men include herpetiform ulcers, inguinal buboes, and/or lymphadenopathies. Since 2003, endemic cases of proctitis and proctocolitis caused by

Prevalence of human papillomavirus genotypes among African women with normal cervical cytology and neoplasia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several meta-analyses confirmed the five most prevalent human papillomavirus (HPV) strains in women with and without cervical neoplastic diseases are HPV16, 18, 31, 52, and 58. HPV16/18 are the predominant oncogenic genotypes, causing approximately 70% of global cervical cancer cases. The vast majority of the women studied in previous analyses were from Europe, North America, Asia, and most recently Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite the high burden of cervical cancer morbidity and mortality in Africa, a robust meta-analysis of HPV genotype prevalence and distribution in Afri

The GBD 2021 perspective: COVID-19's impact on diarrheal mortality and etiological trends, 1990-2021.

INTRODUCTION: Diarrheal diseases remain a leading cause of global mortality. While significant progress has been made in reducing diarrheal deaths, particularly among children under five, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced new dynamics through non-pharmaceutical interventions and healthcare disruptions. Understanding the evolving burden during this period is critical for guiding post-pandemic control strategies. METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, we analyzed diarrhea-related deaths and age-standardized death rates (ASDRs) across 204 countries from 1990 to 2021. Es

Incidence of tuberculosis among reported AIDS cases in Quebec from 1979 to 1996.

BACKGROUND: The impact of HIV infection on tuberculosis (TB) rates in Quebec has not been fully established. Because concurrent HIV infection is the single most important factor in TB reactivation, the authors used Quebec AIDS surveillance data to quantify the extent of TB among reported AIDS cases and to identify the characteristics of AIDS patients with TB. METHODS: The study population comprised people aged 15 years and over with AIDS diagnosed between Jan. 1, 1979, and Dec. 31, 1996, and reported by Mar. 13, 1997. Patients with TB (all forms) and those without TB were compared. Multivaria

Whole-population trends in obesity across dimensions of inequality in England, 2019-25: a retrospective, longitudinal cohort study of 54 million adults.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the 21st century's greatest public health challenges. Evidence on how inequalities intersect to shape the obesity burden is scarce, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to investigate trends in the incidence and prevalence of obesity among adults in England, and to examine variation by age, sex, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and geographical region. METHODS: In this retrospective, longitudinal cohort study, we analysed whole-population, individual-level, anonymised, electronic health records with life-course data on the entire population of adult

Prevalence of Radial Artery Variants and Their Relationship with Clinical Considerations of the Antebrachial Region: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: The radial artery (RA) is one of the terminal branches of the brachial artery, extending along the lateral forearm, crossing the anatomical snuffbox, and contributing to the palmar arches. Anatomical variations in the RA are of great clinical relevance due to their implications in procedures such as transradial catheterization, arterial cannulation, and bypass grafting. These variants may alter the course, branching pattern, or origin of the vessel, potentially increasing procedural complexity and the risk of iatrogenic injury. In critically ill patients and in surgical or interven

The Prevalence of Islet Autoantibodies in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Global Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pancreatic islet autoantibodies (iAb) are the hallmark of autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes. A more comprehensive understanding of the global iAb prevalence could help reduce avertible morbidity and mortality among children and adolescents and contribute to the understanding in the observed differences in the incidence, prevalence and health outcomes of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes across and within countries. We present the first scoping review that provides a global synthesis of the prevalence of iAb in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. RE

Predictors of self-reported sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men in 54 low and middle income countries (LMICs): a comparison of deep learning and classical machine learning algorithms.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a global health challenge, with 374 million new cases annually. Among men, STIs cause serious complications, increase the risk of HIV infection, and contribute to stigma and economic burdens, especially in low and middle income countries. Traditional models often miss complex risk interactions, while machine learning and deep learning offer stronger predictive tools. This study applied deep learning and traditional machine learning algorithms to predict self-reported STIs and to model predictors of self-reported STIs among men in 54 L

Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis on Janus kinase inhibitors in the management of vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a disease that affects people of all skin shades and can impact their quality of life. Reliable evidence on the effectiveness and adverse events associated with the recent use of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors to treat vitiligo is needed. This protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis seeks to collect evidence from both randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies to determine the effectiveness and patient-centered outcomes concerning treatment with JAK inhibitors. METHODS: We will conduct a systematic review of the literature for RCTs and obse

Prevalence of syphilis among men who have sex with men: a global systematic review and meta-analysis from 2000-20.

BACKGROUND: The WHO Global Health Sector Strategy aims to reduce worldwide syphilis incidence by 90% between 2018 and 2030. If this goal is to be achieved, interventions that target high-burden groups, including men who have sex with men (MSM), will be required. However, there are no global prevalence estimates of syphilis among MSM to serve as a baseline for monitoring or modelling disease burden. We aimed to assess the global prevalence of syphilis among MSM using the available literature. METHODS: In this global systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, and

Local dynamics of a white syndrome outbreak and changes in the microbial community associated with colonies of the scleractinian brain coral Pseudodiploria strigosa.

Reef corals in the Mexican Reef System have been severely affected by the emergence of a white syndrome that resembles both White Plague II and SCTLD descriptions. Meandroid scleractinian coral species are among the most severely affected. To gain insight into this affliction we conducted a broad study in the brain coral Pseudodiploria strigosa at a rear reef site in the NE Mexican Caribbean. We describe macro and microscopical signals of the disease, characterize the outbreak dynamics, the tissue histopathology, explore immunological responses in the individuals, and compare microbial assembl

Impact of minimum catch size on the population viability of Strombus gigas (Mesogastropoda: Strombidae) in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

The queen conch Strombus gigas represents one of the most important fishery resources of the Caribbean but heavy fishing pressure has led to the depletion of stocks throughout the region, causing the inclusion of this species into CITES Appendix II and IUCN's Red-List. In Mexico, the queen conch is managed through a minimum fishing size of 200 mm shell length and a fishing quota which usually represents 50% of the adult biomass. The objectives of this study were to determine the intrinsic population growth rate of the queen conch population of Xel-Ha, Quintana Roo, Mexico, and to assess the ef

Across ancestries, HLA-B∗08:01∼DRB1∗03:01 (DR3) and HLA-DQA∗01:02 (DR2) increase the risk to develop juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus through low complement C4 levels.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune/inflammatory disease with a strong genetic component. Genetic burden is higher in children when compared to patients with adult-onset SLE, contributing to earlier disease expression and more severe phenotypes. The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) cluster on chromosome 6p21.3 is among the most variable genomic regions, representing a major risk-factor for SLE in adults. Its impact on juvenile-onset (j)SLE remains largely unstudied. METHODS: High-resolution sequencing of HLA class I (A, B, C), class II (DRB1, DQA1, DQB1) and cl
