Physiological and nutritional state can modify sensory ability and perception through hormone signaling. Obesity and related metabolic disorders present a chronic imbalance in hormonal signaling that could impact sensory systems. In the olfactory system, external chemical cues are transduced into electrical signals to encode information. It is becoming evident that this system can also detect internal chemical cues in the form of molecules of energy homeostasis and endocrine hormones, whereby neurons of the olfactory system are modulated to change animal behavior towards olfactory cues. We hyp

INTRODUCTION: Since antiquity, natural products have been widely used to relieve symptoms and prevent numerous diseases. Early treatments for vascular disorders, including thrombosis, relied heavily on plant-derived substances, which later served as prototypes for the development of platelet aggregation inhibitors and coagulation-modulating agents. Among these bioactive constituents, phenolic compounds-abundantly found in various botanical sources-have gained prominence due to their well-established antioxidant properties and reported anticoagulant effects. Recent studies highlight that the st

BACKGROUND: Constipation is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis. Conventional pharmacological treatments, while effective for short-term symptom relief, are limited by adverse effects, high recurrence rates after discontinuation, and risks of dependency with prolonged use. Xiaoer Qixing Cha (XQC), a well-established Chinese herbal prescription, is widely utilized in pediatric care for addressing dyspepsia, diminished appetite, and constipation. However, its therapeutic mechanisms remain poorly elucidated.
PURPOSE: This study was designed to comprehen

Osteoporosis is a chronic bone disorder characterized by decreased bone mass, leading to brittle bones and fractures. Oxidative stress has been identified as the most profound trigger for the initiation and progression of osteoporosis. Current treatment strategies do not induce new bone formation and fail to address a high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have been explored in bone tissue regeneration owing to their inherent osteogenic property, but they lack antioxidant and cell adhesion properties, required in such applications. We have developed

The pathological hallmark of Huntington disease (HD) is the intracellular aggregation of mutant huntingtin (mHTT) in striatal neurons and glia associated with the selective loss of striatal medium-sized spiny neurons. Up to the present, the role of glia in HD is poorly understood and has been classically considered secondary to neuronal disorder. Trehalose is a disaccharide known to possess many pharmacological properties, acting as an antioxidant, a chemical chaperone, and an inducer of autophagy. In this study, we analyzed at an early postnatal development stage the abnormalities observed in

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), affecting up to 15% of pregnancies worldwide, is a complex metabolic disorder arising from the interaction of pregnancy-induced insulin resistance and inadequate pancreatic β-cell compensation. This review synthesizes current advances in understanding the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies of GDM. Mechanistically, GDM develops through a multifactorial network involving placental hormone–driven insulin resistance, impaired β-cell adaptive remodeling, genetic susceptibility, and epigenetic modifications that alter key metabolic regulators such as INSR an

Anthropogenic activities and the large volume of compounds released into the environment are sources of contamination for plants, animals, and humans. The herbicide monosodium methyl arsenate (MSMA) ranks among the best-selling agricultural pesticides in Brazil. It is classified as highly toxic, containing arsenic, which crosses the placenta, reaching the developing embryo. To assess the toxic effects of these chemicals, model organisms such as chicken embryos are used, as they share phylotypic features with human embryos in the early stages of development, allowing extrapolation between speci

The blood-testis barrier (BTB) is a specialized structure that maintains the testicular microenvironment and supports normal spermatogenesis. Preserving its structural integrity is critical for male reproductive function. In recent years, growing attention has been directed toward the adverse effects of exogenous toxicants, including environmental pollutants, nanomaterials, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and microplastics, on BTB integrity. Increasing evidence indicates that these toxicants impair the BTB through four major, interconnected mechanisms: (i) oxidative stress and disruptio

Hidden protein states with partially unfolded regions can have a functional relevance and may also contribute to an uncontrolled self-association of proteins leading to pathological conditions. Human ileal bile acid-binding protein (hI-BABP), a member of the family of intracellular lipid-binding proteins (iLBPs), plays a key role in the transcellular trafficking and metabolic targeting of bile salts. Disorder-order transitions and sparsely populated hidden states in hI-BABP are thought to be key elements of ligand recognition, with implications for bile salt recycling and bile salt-mediated si

The dorsolateral column of the periaqueductal gray (dPAG) is a midbrain structure involved in innate defensive reactions but also contributes to processes relevant to the neurobiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, whether dPAG activity contributes to the expression and consolidation of aversive memories, as well as persistent anxiety-like states, remains unclear. The present study investigated these processes in male and female Wistar rats using the conditioned place aversion (CPA) paradigm followed by the elevated plus maze (EPM) test to assess anxiety-like behavior. Increased phosphorylation of TDP-43 is a pathological hallmark of several neurodegenerative disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). However, the regulation and roles of TDP-43 phosphorylation remain incompletely understood. A variety of techniques have been utilized to understand TDP-43 phosphorylation, including kinase/phosphatase manipulation, phosphomimic variants, and genetic, physical, or chemical inducement in a variety of cell cultures and animal models, and via analyses of post-mortem human tissues. These studies have produced conflic

Sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) is an alternative to perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), primarily used as surfactant in various industrial and commercial applications. Due to the presence of both perfluorinated carbon tail and sulfonate functional group in its molecular structure, OBS exhibits exceptional chemical stability and resistance to environmental degradation. Recent environmental monitoring studies have detected OBS in soil, surface and groundwater, across diverse geographic regions, indicating that human populations are inevitably exposed to this pollutant through

OBJECTIVES: Keratinocytes, the predominant cells in the uppermost layer of the skin, serve as theprimary protection against environmental threats. These cells exhibit activation in the presence of physical trauma, ultraviolet radiation, chemical agents, or allergenic substances. Once activated, keratinocytes release a variety of immunomodulatory soluble mediators that initiate and propagate the inflammatory response. However, dysregulation of this response and the consequent overactivation of pro-inflammatory mediators within the skin may contribute to the pathogenesis of diverse conditions, i
