The Effects of Heat Stress on the Ovary, Follicles and Oocytes: A Systematic Review.

Climate change is driving significant environmental changes with profound implications for human health, including fertility. While the detrimental effects of heat on spermatogenesis are well-documented, the impact of elevated temperatures on ovaries and female fertility remains less explored. This review systematically examines the literature on heat stress (HS) effects on mammalian ovaries, follicles, and oocytes. Evidence from mammalian models indicates that HS significantly impairs ovarian function, disrupting hormone profiles, reducing ovarian size and weight, altering histology, decreasi

Reactions at interfaces as a source of sulfate formation in sea-salt particles.

Understanding the formation of sulfate particles in the troposphere is critical because of their health effects and their direct and indirect effects on radiative forcing, and hence on climate. Laboratory studies of the chemical and physical changes in sodium chloride, the major component of sea-salt particles, show that sodium hydroxide is generated upon reaction of deliquesced sodium chloride particles with gas-phase hydroxide. The increase in alkalinity will lead to an increase in the uptake and oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfate in sea-salt particles. This chemistry is missing from cur

Stability of a stochastic brucellosis model with semi-Markovian switching and diffusion.

To explore the influence of state changes on brucellosis, a stochastic brucellosis model with semi-Markovian switchings and diffusion is proposed in this paper. When there is no switching, we introduce a critical value R s and obtain the exponential stability in mean square when R s < 1 by using the stochastic Lyapunov function method. Sudden climate changes can drive changes in transmission rate of brucellosis, which can be modelled by a semi-Markov process. We study the influence of stationary distribution of semi-Markov process on extinction of brucellosis in switching environment includ

Influence of satellite-derived rainfall patterns on plague occurrence in northeast Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: In the tropics, rainfall data are seldom accurately recorded, and are often discontinuous in time. In the scope of plague-research in northeast Tanzania, we adapted previous research to reconstruct rainfall patterns at a suitable resolution (1 km), based on time series of NDVI: more accurate satellite imagery was used, in the form of MODIS NDVI, and rainfall data were collected from the TRMM sensors instead of in situ data. First, we established a significant relationship between monthly rainfall and monthly composited MODIS NDVI. The established linear relationship was then used t

Predictive models for heat stress assessment in Holstein dairy heifers using infrared thermography and machine learning.

Heat stress is a condition that impairs the animal's productive and reproductive performance, and can be monitored by physiological and environmental variables, including body surface temperature, through infrared thermography. The objective of this work is to develop computational models for classification of heat stress from respiratory rate variable in dairy cattle using infrared thermography. The database used for the construction of the models was obtained from 10 weaned heifers, housed in a climate chamber with temperature control, and submitted to thermal comfort and heat wave treatment

Effect of Temperature and Humidity on the Allegro-inflammatory Factors and Allergic Rhinitis-related Behavior.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an allergic disease induced by the T helper 2 (TH2) lymphocyte immune response, where its mediators are the primary cause of clinical symptoms. Environmental factors are the primary determinants of the allergic response in genetically susceptible individuals. This study investigates the effects of climate conditions (warm, cold, humid, and dry) on allergic rhinitis. AR models were created in mice under 4 different conditions. We investigated AR-related behavior (sneezing and nose rubbing), as well as total immunoglobulin E (IgE), histamine, interleukin-4 (IL-4), leuko

Mapping the environmental limitations to growth of coastal Douglas-fir stands on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii spp. menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) occurs over a wide range of environmental conditions on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Although ecological zones have been drawn, no formal spatial analysis of environmental limitations on tree growth has been carried out. Such an exercise is desirable to identify areas that may warrant intensive management and to evaluate the impacts of predicted climate change this century. We applied a physiologically based forest growth model, 3-PG (Physiological Principles Predicting Growth), to interpret and map current limita

Predicting habitat suitability of Dalbergia latifolia Roxb. (Indian rosewood) using MaxEnt: implications for conservation and sustainable forest management.

BACKGROUND: Dalbergia latifolia Roxb. (Indian rosewood) is a leguminous tropical hardwood of high ecological and economic value, native to India’s tropical and subtropical forests. Its richly coloured, durable heartwood and acoustic qualities make it a prized timber in domestic and international markets. Ecologically, the species contributes to forest health by stabilising soils, fixing atmospheric nitrogen, and supporting associated biodiversity. However, populations have sharply declined due to illegal logging, unsustainable harvesting, and habitat loss. It is currently classified as Vulnera

Daily Temperature and Bacillary Dysentery: Estimated Effects, Attributable Risks, and Future Disease Burden in 316 Chinese Cities.

BACKGROUND: Bacillary dysentery (BD) remains a significant public health issue, especially in developing countries. Evidence assessing the risk of BD from temperature is limited, particularly from national studies including multiple locations with different climatic characteristics. OBJECTIVES: We estimated the effect of temperature on BD across China, assessed heterogeneity and attributable risks across cities and regions, and projected the future risk of BD under climate change. METHODS: Daily BD surveillance and meteorological data over 2014-2016 were collected from the Chinese Center for

Satisfied employees, stronger teams: linking need satisfaction to team-boosting behaviours via work engagement.

PURPOSE: Modern work teams are increasingly diverse, dynamic, and dispersed. For organisations to thrive in this context, they must prioritise team functioning. Individual team members play a central role in shaping team climate, dynamics, and performance. This study investigates relationships between basic psychological need satisfaction (BPNS), work engagement, and team-boosting behaviours (TBB). Drawing on self-determination theory, it examines whether employees' need satisfaction relates to discretionary behaviours that enhance team climate through work engagement, linking individual motiv

Glacier boundary extraction and spatiotemporal variation analysis in Geladandong region.

Glaciers, as sensitive indicators of global climate change, play a crucial role in influencing the global water cycle, sea level rise, and ecosystem dynamics. Understanding the interactive mechanisms between glacier boundary changes and multidimensional factors such as climate and topography is essential for revealing the complex relationships underlying the ecological functions supported by glacier systems. This study proposes a Remote Sensing Index-Random Forest fusion method (NDI-RF) to map glacial extent. The NDI-RF approach combines remote sensing index techniques with Random Forest model

[Biophysical effects of wetland vegetation changes on land surface temperature: Research progress and prospects.].

Wetland vegetation regulates surface energy balance through biophysical processes and modulates land surface temperature. However, a systematic understanding of such effect remains insufficient. We systematically reviewed the effects of wetland vegetation changes on land surface temperature from three perspectives: distribution patterns, vegetation coverage, and phenological dynamics. The regulation of key biophysical processes such as evapotranspiration, surface albedo, and turbulent exchange by wetland vegetation changes exhibits pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity, thereby leading to di

Greater Coupling Between Tree Radial Growth and Canopy Activity Is Associated With Weaker Drought Resistance in Drier Closed Forests.

Understanding tree radial growth and its resistance to extreme droughts is crucial for predicting forest carbon sequestration in response to climate change. Photosynthates derived from canopy activity are fundamental to tree radial growth and drought resistance. However, the extent to which tree radial growth is coupled with canopy activity and whether such coupling is associated with growth resistance to extreme droughts remain unclear. Here, we compiled a pan-continental paired dataset of tree radial growth (represented by tree-ring chronologies) and canopy activity (estimated by a vegetatio

Seasonal water use strategies of dominant herbaceous species in a desert steppe revealed by stable isotopes.

INTRODUCTION: Global climate change alters the spatiotemporal distribution of soil water, reshaping plant water use strategies in water-limited ecosystems. However, seasonal shifts in plant water-source use and uncertainties associated with different water-source partitioning approaches remain insufficiently quantified in desert steppe ecosystems. METHODS: Using stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes combined with soil water content (SWC), we investigated the seasonal water sources of Stipa klemenzii and Cleistogenes songorica in a desert steppe in Inner Mongolia from May to September 2025. Prenatal exposure to extreme ambient heat may amplify the adverse impact of Superstorm Sandy on basal ganglia volume among school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Weather-related stressors on healthy brain development has become an important topic in recent years. Notably, prenatal stress exposure to natural disasters may disrupt child neurodevelopment, with recent research exploring its impact on child brain morphology. Prenatal exposure to extreme weather events, such as ambient heat, may also affect child brain morphology. The basal ganglia, while historically related to motor ability, has gained increasing attention for its role in various non-motor functions, such as emotion regulation. Leveraging an existing cohort with and without pre

An App-Based Intervention to Protect Home Care Workers From Heat-Related Health Risks: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of heatwaves, posing growing risks for workers. Home care workers face heightened heat risks due to physically demanding tasks, rising patient needs, frequent travel, and limited access to cooling environments. This study aims to causally evaluate the effectiveness of an app-based intervention (REHEAT strategy) in reducing adverse effects of heatwaves among Swiss home care workers. This multicenter, unblinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT) will involve 350 home care workers from the regions of Northern and Southern Switzerland. Part

The national distribution of lymphatic filariasis cases in Malawi using patient mapping and geostatistical modelling.

BACKGROUND: In 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that Malawi had successfully eliminated lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem. Understanding clinical case distributions at a national and sub-national level is important, so essential care packages can be provided to individuals living with LF symptoms. This study aimed to develop a national database and map of LF clinical cases across Malawi using geostatistical modelling approaches, programme-identified clinical cases, antigenaemia prevalence and climate information. METHODOLOGY: LF clinical cases identified th
