Urban lakes contribute to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions driven by both natural processes and anthropogenic activities. In this study, we conducted seasonal sampling and analysis of GHG concentrations and water chemistries in Xuanwu Lake, Nanjing, China. Concurrently, we observed pore water chemistry within the lake bottom sediments. Radon isotope activity in lake water was also measured. Then, this study expanded to a broad understanding of urban lake GHG emissions by conducting a meta-analysis of over 100 lakes of similar size but various types (urban vs. non-urban). Xuanwu Lake is a

Along low-elevation coastlines, sea-level rise (SLR) threatens to salinate ecosystems. To understand the effects of SLR and freshwater management on landscape carbon (C) exchange, we measured the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 between subtropical wetland ecosystems and the atmosphere along a dynamic salinity gradient. Ecosystems were representative of freshwater marl prairies, brackish ecotones, and saline scrub mangrove forests in the southeastern Everglades. Patterns in NEE explained the landward movement of coastal wetlands, a process observed over the last 70 years. The capacity to ca

Fishponds are hotspots for carbon sequestration, processing, and emissions. However, the environmental drivers of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in these ecosystems remain poorly understood. This study investigates how management practices influence GHG dynamics during the wet phase. We hypothesize that management alters water and sediment characteristics, thereby affecting GHG dynamics. In summer 2023, we measured CO2 and CH4 concentrations, along with water and sediment characteristics, in 38 ponds in La Dombes (France) in response to fertilization, feeding, liming and drying. GHG concentration

Wetland is one of the most significant sources of methane (CH4). Although global warming and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2) are expected to affect the CH4 cycle, the response of CH4 emission in natural wetland and paddy has been observed to be inconsistent. This variation is likely due to the complex interactions among soil, plant, and microbial processes that regulate CH4 dynamics, leaving the underlying mechanisms across global studies unknown. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to elucidate the effects of warming, eCO2, and their co-effects on CH4 cycling in wetla

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations have profound effects on methane (CH4) emissions from rice paddies, yet their impact on anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to explore how elevated CO2 affects the nitrate-driven AOM potential and the abundance and community composition of the associated anaerobic methanotrophs in paddy fields across three soil depths (0-5, 5-10, and 10-20 cm) and three rice growth stages (tillering, jointing, and flowering) through a controlled field experiment using an open-top chamber (OTC) platform. The results showed tha

Carbon capture and utilization remains a major challenge in mitigating climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) fixing microorganisms offer promising routes to convert CO2 emissions into valuable products. Clostridium luticellarii is a recently discovered acetogen capable of converting CO2 to acetic, butyric and isobutyric acids using H2 or methanol as electron donors. Both routes can use renewable electricity as primary energy input, but each has its limitations: While H2-based processes suffer from poor gas-to-liquid mass transfer and low product selectivity beyond acetic acid, methanol requires

The rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and their role in climate change necessitate the formulation of effective techniques for CO2 capture and utilization. The catalytic conversion of CO2 into valuable compounds offers a possible method for reducing its environmentally harmful effects. The present study explores the investigation of two amine-templated one-dimensional copper phosphonate frameworks: [C3N6H6][Cu2(H2hedp)]·H2O (I) and [C4N2H12][Cu3(hedp)2]·4H2O (II) via a hydrothermal synthetic strategy using H4hedp (1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid) as the primary ligand and two differe

Mitigating climate change requires both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. This study investigates a novel biological pH swing strategy for mineral carbonation at ambient conditions as a potential option for atmospheric CO2 removal. Through mathematical modeling, we evaluated a mineral carbonation system that utilized Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans to achieve alternating sulfur reduction and oxidation, respectively, with the cyclic process to effect pH swing for promoting the dissolution of a silicate mineral and the

Climate change has contributed to increased mycotoxin contamination in food systems, posing a growing threat to human health, including reproductive health. Our study aimed to investigate how mycotoxins entering the follicular fluid affect oxidative stress processes. We analyzed 88 follicular fluid samples from infertile patients for common mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), its main metabolite alpha-zearalenol (aZOL), and aflatoxin M1 (AfM1), and examined their relationship with oxidative stress markers (MDA, SOD, GPx, CAT, and TAOC) and hormones (cortisol, estradi

In response to the growing demands for environmental protection and sustainable growth, the development of multifunctional, formaldehyde-free adhesives has emerged as a significant research direction within the field of materials science. Inspired by the robust structure of spider silk (composed of densely packed rigid crystalline regions and loosely arranged amorphous domains), this study employs epoxidized melamine prepolymer (EM) to react with active groups on soy protein, establishing a rigid cross-linked network. A flexible polyester, ESS, is incorporated into the adhesive system via hydr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The environmental presence of excess nitrogen poses a significant threat to biodiversity, human health, and climate stability. Conversely, nitrogen deficiency can hinder our ability to sustainably provide sufficient food for the global population. The impact of nitrates and nitrites on human health is intricately tied to their concentrations in water and food sources. The aim of the following article was to summarize the data on the effects of nitrates on health, with particular emphasis on their effect on the thyroid gland. RECENT FINDINGS: Current scientific findings indic

Burkholderia pseudomallei (Bp), causing melioidosis, is becoming a major global public health concern. It is highly endemic in Southeast Asia (SEA) and Northern Australia and is persisting beyond the established areas of endemicity. This study aimed to determine the environmental variables that would predict the most suitable ecological niche for this pathogenic bacterium in SEA by maximum entropy (MaxEnt) modeling. Systematic review and meta-analysis of data for melioidosis were obtained from public databases such as PubMed, Harmonized World Soil (HWSD) and WorldClim. The potential map showin

Environmental issues and concerns about animal welfare display current challenges in animal husbandry and feeding. Rye, a cereal that has scarcely been used in animal feed in recent decades, could help address some of the challenges in pig feeding as a climate friendly and health promoting feed ingredient. Distinct constituents of rye - especially its non-starch-polysaccharides (NSP) - are fermented in the large intestine while short chain fatty acids (SCFA) are produced in that process. This can promote gut health and the feeling of satiety in pigs. To examine the site of the digestion of rye

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is pivotal for both agricultural activities and climate change mitigation, and biochar stands as a promising tool for bolstering SOC and curtailing soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, the involvement of biochar in SOC dynamics and the underlying interactions among biochar, soil microbes, iron minerals, and fresh organic matter (FOM, such as plant debris) remain largely unknown, especially in agricultural soils after long-term biochar amendment. We therefore introduced FOM to soils with and without a decade-long history of biochar amendment, performed soil mi

Natural gas (NG) is expected to provide a substantial portion of electricity generation in many jurisdictions for the foreseeable future. Postcombustion carbon capture and storage (CCS) effectively abates direct CO2 emissions; however, indirect NG supply chain emissions in most jurisdictions are incompatible with climate change mitigation goals. This life cycle assessment evaluates specific opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint of combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) generation with CCS using existing low-emission NG production practices, technologies, and processes combined with emerging

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been a harm to reservoir health for decades and it is believed that as climate changes and temperatures rise, frequency and severity of HABs are likely to increase as well. Understanding the relationships between physical factors in a reservoir and bloom trends could be key for keeping rising blooms at bay. A modified stability index based on temperature dependent water density at multiple depths was adapted into a code to process high frequency reservoir monitoring data. Metrics and visual tools were developed to use this stability index to objectively analyze

A major consequence of the Industrial Revolution was the acidification of continental water bodies by sulfates (SO42-) and nitrates deposited over long-range distance from atmospheric emissions. Regulation policies were implemented in the 1980s leading to the general decrease of SO42- concentrations in freshwaters and progressive recovery from acidification, a complex process that is still ongoing. The surface water SO42- decrease has been linked to declining calcium (Ca2+) and increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. Here, up to 40 years (1983-2023) of chemical data in 46 lake
