Gambling-related psychological predictors and moderators of attentional bias among electronic gaming machine players.

Objective: Attentional biases (ABs) have been shown to develop in the context of substance use disorders. Relatively less focus has been paid toward the development of ABs in behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder (GD). Furthermore, the psychological predictors and moderators of AB in GD remain unknown. The present study addressed these empirical gaps. Methods: Fifty-two non-GD electronic gaming machine (EGM) players, 25 GD-EGM players, and 61 non-gamblers completed measures of gambling-related behaviors and cognitions (problem gambling severity, cravings, expectancies, motives) and s

Dropout from face-to-face, multi-session psychological treatments for problem and disordered gambling: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this systematic review and meta-analysis were to examine the overall prevalence of dropout from psychological treatments for problem gambling and gambling disorder and to examine how study, client, and treatment variables influenced dropout rates. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted to identify studies of cognitive and/or behavioral therapies and motivational interventions for problem gambling and gambling disorder. Meta-analysis was used to calculate an overall weighted dropout rate. Random effect meta-regressions were used to examine covariates of dropout rates.

Emotion regulation and psychological and physical health during a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.

The current research tests the links between emotion regulation and psychological and physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Study 1, parents (N = 365) who had reported on their psychological and physical health prior to the pandemic completed the same health assessments along with their use of emotion regulation strategies when confined in the home with their school-aged children during a nationwide lockdown. In Study 2, individuals (N = 1,607) from a nationally representative panel study completed similar measures of psychological and physical health and use of emotion regulation s

Integrating headache trigger management strategies into cognitive-behavioral therapy: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Traditionally, the standard advice to individuals suffering from migraine and tension-type headache was that the best way to prevent headaches is to avoid the triggers. This advice has been challenged in recent years and the Trigger Avoidance Model of Headache has been proposed, which suggests that one pathway to developing a headache disorder is by avoiding triggers resulting in trigger sensitization. The objective of the study was to evaluate a novel intervention for primary headache comprising a new approach to trigger management that includes exposure to some triggers with the g

Massed cognitive processing therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder in women survivors of intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) report significant trauma histories, high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), head injuries and comorbid disorders, and multiple barriers to treatment that often preclude the regular attendance and engagement required in typical therapy protocols. The significant challenges faced by IPV survivors needing treatment may be ameliorated by condensing effective treatments for PTSD, such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT), in an accelerated delivery timeline. METHOD: Using a multiple subject, single case design of six matched pai

Sources of variability in the prospective relation of language to social, emotional, and behavior problem symptoms: Implications for developmental language disorder.

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) are at risk for social, emotional, and behavioral (SEB) maladjustment throughout development, though it is unclear if poor language proficiency per se can account for this risk as associations between language and SEB appear more variable among typical-language children. This study investigated whether the relationship between language and SEB problems is stronger at very low levels of language and considered confounders including socioeconomic status, sex, and nonverbal intelligence. These were examined using a population-based survey design

Linguistic indicators of chronic pain acceptance in individuals with spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: Pain acceptance is a robust predictor of adjustment to chronic pain, including pain in those with spinal cord injury (SCI). This preliminary study aimed to identify linguistic patterns indicative of chronic pain acceptance to gain new insights into the underlying cognitive-emotional process of this construct. METHOD: Individuals with SCI and chronic pain (N = 30) completed the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ) and a semistructured interview about their pain. Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software was used to quantify linguistic categories of interest in transcribed i

Subtyping patients with binge-eating disorder by dietary restraint and negative affect: Characteristics and treatment outcome.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) subtyped by dietary restraint (DR) and the negative affect (NA) dimension of depression, anxiety, hostility, and self-esteem, comparing clinical features and outcome of evidence-based psychological treatments. It was hypothesized that individuals with DR and high NA (DR-HNA) would have lower functioning and poorer immediate and long-term BED treatment outcomes compared to those with DR and low NA (DR-LNA). METHOD: Cluster analysis was conducted (n = 159) as a secondary analysis of data from a randomized group cognitive-b

A culturally tailored intervention to reduce risk of alcohol-exposed pregnancies in American Indian communities: Rationale, design, and methods.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to alcohol can cause lifelong physical and cognitive challenges in the form of fetal alcohol syndrome and other fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The prevention of prenatal alcohol exposure is thus a public health priority - and one that should account for the particular needs of subpopulations, including in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. Prior to conception, alcohol-exposed pregnancy prevention is accomplished by encouraging the reduction or elimination of risky alcohol use and/or promoting effective contraceptive use among risky dri

Refixation patterns of mind-wandering during real-world scene perception.

Recent studies have shown that mind-wandering (MW) is associated with changes in eye movement parameters, but have not explored how MW affects the sequential pattern of eye movements involved in making sense of complex visual information. Eye movements naturally unfold over time and this process may reveal novel information about cognitive processing during MW. The current study used Recurrence Quantification Analysis (Anderson, Bischof, Laidlaw, Risko, & Kingstone, 2013) to describe the pattern of refixations (fixations directed to previously inspected regions) during MW. Participants complet

The interparental relationship: Meta-analytic associations with children's maladjustment and responses to interparental conflict.

The aim of the current meta-analysis was to aggregate concurrent and longitudinal empirical research on associations between the interparental relationship and both children's maladjustment (i.e., externalizing and internalizing symptoms) and children's responses to interparental conflict (i.e., emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and physiological). Based on major theoretical frameworks, we distinguished between six dimensions of the interparental relationship: relationship quality, conflict frequency, hostile, disengaged, and unconstructive forms of conflict, and child-related conflict. Interpersonal change as a mediator of the within- and between-patient alliance-outcome association in two treatments for generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Although a better therapeutic alliance associates with treatment outcome, it may do so in different ways. For example, alliance quality may promote improvement as it shifts over time (within-patient changes); alternatively, alliance quality may also, or instead, influence outcome when generally higher or lower for some patients relative to others (between-patient differences). Although both components have been linked to patient improvement, the distinct mechanisms of these associations have been rarely examined. Conceptually, it follows that within-patient alliance fluctuations (re

Probing gambling urge as a state construct: Evidence from a sample of community gamblers.

Little effort has been made to systematically test the psychometric properties of the Gambling Craving Scale (GACS; Young & Wohl, 2009). The GACS is adapted from the Questionnaire on Smoking Urges (Tiffany & Drobes, 1991) and thus measures gambling-related urge. Crucially, the validation of scales assessing gambling urge is complex because this construct is better conceptualized as a state (a transient and context-determined phenomenon). In the present study, we tested the psychometric properties of the French version of the GACS with 2 independent samples of community gamblers following an in

Mummy, daddy, and addiction: Implicit insecure attachment is associated with substance use in college students.

Indirect measures of cognition have become an important tool in research on addiction. To date, however, no research has examined whether indirect measures of parent attachment relate to substance use. To examine this issue, a sample of college students (N = 121) was asked to complete two measures of explicit attachment (the Relationship Questionnaire; Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991, and the Adult Attachment Styles; Collins & Read, 1990), and a measure of implicit attachment (the Single Category Implicit Association Test, Karpinski & Steinman, 2006). The indirect attachment measure assessed the

Neuropsychological test performance in depressed and nondepressed collegiate athletes following concussion.

OBJECTIVE: To examine neuropsychological test differences following concussion between collegiate athletes screening positive and negative for depression. METHOD: Participants included 113 (91 male) college athletes, who were assessed at baseline and following diagnosis of sport-related concussion (SRC). The Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen was used as a screener for depression. Athletes were categorized as either depressed (≥4) or nondepressed (<4) following injury and compared on composites for memory and attention-processing speed. Groups were also compared on reliable change index sc

Are primary and secondary types of brain anomalies exclusive factors affecting the attention networks in individuals with spina bifida?

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) frequently exhibit cognitive impairments on tasks mediated by brain regions involved in the posterior attention network. Although such deficits have been historically assumed to result from primary and secondary brain insults, there is a dearth of literature regarding whether sequential versus simultaneous surgical closure of neural folds and surgical shunt placement affect neuropsychological function and brain structure of attention networks that have been widely studied in individuals with SBM. The current study addressed these

Anosognosia for prospective and retrospective memory deficits: Assessment and theoretical considerations.

OBJECTIVE: Patients who suffer from memory loss after an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) may also suffer from anosognosia, or unawareness of their memory loss. How we define and measure anosognosia can have critical implications for its study and clinical assessment. Commonly used measures often lack standardization and reliability checks for responses. Moreover, these methods rely heavily on cognitive abilities (e.g., language abilities) that are often affected after brain injury. The aim of this study is to elucidate how to best conceptualize and detect anosognosia for memory loss by introducing

Female rats express habitual behavior earlier in operant training than males.

Habitual behavior can be advantageous by increasing the availability of cognitive resources for use in other tasks. However, habitual behaviors are problematic when they are coopted to prolong the maladaptive responding present in several psychopathologies such as substance abuse, dysregulated fear responding in posttraumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although sex differences exist in the occurrence or progression of these psychopathologies, there are no studies that compare the development of habitual behavior systematically in male and female animals. In the present

Executive impairment is associated with unawareness of neuropsychiatric symptoms in premanifest and early Huntington's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Unawareness of neuropsychiatric symptoms appears to be common in Huntington's disease (HD), but the clinical correlates of unawareness are unclear. Identifying predictors of unawareness is important for improving diagnosis of neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive impairment, specifically executive impairment, may be a potential important predictor of unawareness. The authors examined whether unawareness of neuropsychiatric symptoms is more common in early HD compared to premanifest HD, and whether executive task performance was associated with awareness, independent of demographi

Memory dysfunction in school-aged children exposed prenatally to antiepileptic drugs.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal exposure to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and in particular valproate (VPA) has been shown to impair intellectual and language development in children, but the impact on memory functioning has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate memory skills in school-age children who were exposed to AEDs prenatally. METHOD: The sample comprised of 105 children aged 6 to 8 years. Information on AED exposure, maternal epilepsy, pregnancy, and medical history was prospectively obtained. Children completed a neuropsychological assessment including measures of verbal a
