Effects of high-intensity aerobic exercise on psychotic symptoms and neurocognition in outpatients with schizophrenia: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The focus in recent years on physical inactivity and metabolic disturbances in individuals with schizophrenia raises the question of potential effects of physical activity. Physical activity has shown beneficial effects on cognition in healthy older individuals as well as on symptom severity in depression. However, opinions diverge regarding whether aerobic high-intensity interval training reduces cognition and key symptoms in schizophrenia. The main objective for the trial is to investigate the potential effects of aerobic high-intensity interval training on neurocognitive functio

3D convolutional neural networks uncover modality-specific brain-imaging predictors for Alzheimer's disease sub-scores.

Different aspects of cognitive functions are affected in patients with Alzheimer's disease. To date, little is known about the associations between features from brain-imaging and individual Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related cognitive functional changes. In addition, how these associations differ among different imaging modalities is unclear. Here, we trained and investigated 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) models that predicted sub-scores of the 13-item Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog13) based on MRI and FDG-PET brain-imaging data. Analysis of the traine

The effect of multi-component exercise intervention in older people with Parkinson's disease and mild cognitive impairment: A randomized controlled study.

A multimodal exercise training program might be the best way to improve motor and cognitive function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), but this has yet to be fully proven in PD patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study aims to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of a theory-based, multi-component exercise intervention in older people with PD-MCI. Participants were randomized into an intervention group (n=23) and an active control group (n=23), receiving the theory-based multi-component exercise intervention and Parkinson's health exercises, respectively. All part

Neurophysiological and cognitive effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in three girls with Rett Syndrome with chronic language impairments.

BACKGROUND: this study was based on both neurophysiological decelerated activity and communication deficits in Rett Syndrome (RTT). AIMS: the aim was to examine the neurophysiological and cognitive effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in three girls with RTT with chronic language impairments. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: we proposed an integrated intervention: tDCS and cognitive empowerment applied to language in order to enhance speech production (new functional sounds and new words). Because maximal gains usually are achieved when tDCS is coupled with behavioral training, w

What is dyslexia? An exploration of the relationship between teachers' understandings of dyslexia and their training experiences.

Given that an estimated 5-10% of the worldwide population is said to have dyslexia, it is of great importance that teachers have an accurate understanding of what dyslexia is and how it effects their students. Using results from a large-scale survey of teachers in England and in Wales (N ≈ 2,600), this paper demonstrates that teachers held a basic understanding of dyslexia, based on the behavioural issues that it is associated with. Teachers lacked the knowledge of the biological (i.e., neurological) and cognitive (i.e., processing) aspects of dyslexia. Moreover, a number of teachers mentioned

Generating synthetic MRI scans for improving Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) combined with Machine Learning (ML) enables early diagnosis, but ML models often underperform when trained on small, heterogeneous medical datasets. Transfer Learning (TL) helps mitigate this limitation, yet models pre-trained on 2D natural images still fall short of those trained directly on related 3D MRI data. To address this gap, we introduce an intermediate strategy based on synthetic data generation. Specifically, we propose a conditional Denoising Diff

The effect of left frontal transcranial direct-current stimulation on propranolol-induced fear memory acquisition and consolidation deficits.

Accumulating evidence supports the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in modulating numerous cognitive functions. Despite the fact that tDCS has been used for the enhancement of memory and cognition, very few animal studies have addressed its impact on the modulation of fear memory. This study was designed to determine whether pre/post-training frontal tDCS application would alter fear memory acquisition and/or consolidation deficits induced by propranolol in NMRI mice. Results indicated that administration of β1-adrenoceptor blocker propranolol (0.1mg/kg) impaired fear

Gait Analysis for Identifying Normal Cognition, Subjective Cognitive Decline, and Mild Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson Disease: Diagnostic Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) along with subjective cognitive decline (PD-SCD) are considered an intermediate status between those with normal cognition (PD-NC) and those with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI). Wearable digital monitoring technologies and machine learning models offer significant potential for assessing cognitive impairment in patients with PD. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the utility of wearable technology and machine learning for identifying ordinal cognitive stages (OCS) in PD based on timed up and go (TUG) tests (including single-task TUG [TUGst] an

CRF Receptor Type 1 Modulates the Nigrostriatal Dopamine Projection and Facilitates Cognitive Flexibility after Acute and Chronic Stress.

Repeated restraint stress (RRS) in rats impairs cognitive flexibility, particularly when faced with additional mild acute stress (AS). We tested the hypothesis that this impairment is associated with altered dopaminergic activity in the dorsal striatum (DS) driven by corticotropin-releasing-factor receptor type 1 (CRFR1) in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Sixty-two male rats received RRS or handling for 14 d, before training on a two-action, two-outcome instrumental conditioning task. Initial learning was assessed using an outcome devaluation test. Cognitive flexibility was assessed

The Effects of Distraction on Cataract Surgery Performance in Consultants and Trainees Using a Simulator.

PURPOSE: Mental workload is a recognised concept in medicine, and cognitive overload may lead to complications in surgery, including cataract surgery. A better understanding of what factors contribute to this can potentially improve patient safety and decrease surgeon stress. Simulated cataract surgery is now an essential part of training and a safe environment for exploring the effects of cognitive load upon performance. We used the EyeSi cataract surgery simulator to assess the effects of distraction on surgical performance and on ophthalmology trainees and consultants undertaking cataract s

A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of electro acupuncture and transcranial direct current stimulation with computerized cognitive rehabilitation in patients with vascular cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) refers to all cognitive disorders caused by cerebrovascular disorders. For the treatment, many types of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments are used but their underlying mechanisms and effects are unclear. Regarding nonpharmacologic treatment, electroacupuncture (EA), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and computerized cognitive rehabilitation treatment (CCRT) are effective. Here, we report the protocol for a randomized controlled trial of the effect and safety of combination therapy of EA or tDCS and CCRT in patients with

Hierarchical learning creates invariant schema within plastic neural networks.

Cognitive neural circuits must balance the plasticity needed for continual learning with the stability needed to preserve an underlying reasoning framework, called a schema. How circuit learning rules form and protect such schemata from being continually overwritten during learning remains unknown. On a visual boundary detection task, we show that a hierarchical learning algorithm creates an invariant schema circuit whose weights remain fixed following sparse initial training, with additional data serving to refine the upstream representation. In contrast, the end-to-end backpropagation algori

Prevention of Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia: The Role of Physical Activity and Exercise.

Vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia, specifically cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), are the second most common cause of dementia. Currently, there are no specific pharmacological treatments for CSVD, and the use of conventional antidementia drugs is not recommended. Exercise has the potential to prevent and mitigate CSVD-related brain damage and improve cognitive function. Mechanistic pathways underlying the neurocognitive benefits of exercise include the control of vascular risk factors, improving endothelial function, and upregulating exerkines. Notably, the thera

Further evidence for the efficacy of a metacognitive group training in schizophrenia.

Metacognitive training (MCT) for patients with schizophrenia is a novel psychological group treatment targeting cognitive biases putatively involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia (e.g. jumping to conclusions, overconfidence in errors). Its eight modules are available cost-free online in many languages. In the present study, 36 subacute or remitted patients were randomly allocated to either the MCT or a wait-list group who received treatment-as-usual (TAU). Baseline and post assessments were 8 weeks apart and were performed blind to group status. MCT showed significantly greater improvem…
