Improved SSVEP Classification Through EEG Artifact Reduction Using Auxiliary Sensors.

Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) are one of the key paradigms used in brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Their performance, however, is substantially degraded by EEG artifacts of muscular, motion-related, and ocular origin. This issue is particularly pronounced in individuals exhibiting increased facial muscle tension or involuntary eye movements. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate an EEG artifact reduction method based on auxiliary channels, including central (Cz), frontal (Fp1), electrooculographic (HEOG), and muscular electrodes (neck, cheek, jaw). Signals

Development and validation of social compensation design scale for urban older users in the context of smart-home social media.

BACKGROUND: The social compensation hypothesis posits that computer-mediated communication can offset psychosocial vulnerabilities among users who face barriers to face-to-face interaction, thereby enhancing well-being. Yet, there is no validated instrument to assess which design features of digital systems enable such compensation. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a Social Compensation Design Scale (SCDS) for urban older adults living alone, situated within smart-home social media as part of home-based, health-enabling environments. METHODS: We conducted a three-phase study from an inform

Perceive, Adapt, and Interact: An Intelligent Virtual Agent for Education in Mixed Reality.

Mixed Reality (MR) environments are reshaping education by fostering engagement and motivation. Within such environments, Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVAs) can serve as personalized guides, tutors, or collaborative partners. In this research, we present a novel IVA for education that perceives the learner's environment, adapts its guidance to their progress, and interacts with both the learner and the real world. Our multimodal IVA integrates speech capabilities powered by large language models (LLMs) with computer vision for dynamic scene understanding, allowing it to converse naturally with

ShadowFormer++: multi-scale shadow priors and diffusion-guided refinement for high-fidelity shadow removal.

Shadows in images cause significant challenges for computer vision applications as they degrade image quality and hinder tasks such as object detection, visual tracking, and semantic segmentation. Existing shadow removal methods often struggle as they fail to localize shadow regions accurately without suppressing non-shadow areas; they tend to lose fine-grained textures and illumination consistency across boundaries, and they also demand heavy computation that limits their use in real-time or resource constrained systems. To address these limitations, we propose a novel framework called Shadow

Helmet detection in traffic scenarios: enhanced performance for complex environments.

In the cutting-edge development of computer vision technology, the high missed detection rate caused by target occlusion and the high computational cost of model inference remain core technical bottlenecks restricting the deployment of robust object detection systems in real-world scenarios. This paper presents an improved YOLOv10n-based algorithm to address these issues. Adaptive-DySample (ADS) enhances target detection via three innovative mechanisms-dynamic alignment, challenging sample prioritization, and multi-scale fusion with range adjustment-enabling flexible, object-aware upsampling t

Unobscured off-axis three-mirror freeform all-aluminum imaging telescope.

Freeform optics has emerged as a significant design tool over the past decade. Non-rotationally symmetric optical surfaces enable high-performance imaging systems to achieve a large field of view (FOV), high resolution, low distortion, lightweight construction, and compact structure simultaneously. Advances in single-point diamond-turning fabrication and computer-generated hologram (CGH)-based metrology are gradually making optical imaging with freeform optics more practical. In this paper, we present the development and verification of an unobscured off-axis three-mirror freeform aluminum ima

Mitigating Diagnostic Errors in Lung Cancer Classification: A Multi-Eyes Principle to Uncertainty Quantification.

In radiology, particularly in lung cancer diagnosis, diagnostic errors and cognitive biases pose substantial challenges. These issues, including perceptual errors, interpretive mistakes, and cognitive biases such as anchoring and premature closure, are often unnoticed by experienced radiologists. To address these challenges, we propose the Multi-Eyes principle approach, which utilises multiple deep learning models to reduce bias and potentially improve diagnostic accuracy. Inspired by the Four-Eyes principle in business and cybersecurity, this methodology employs various 3D and 2D (for validat

Computer-aided breast cancer detection and classification in mammography: A comprehensive review.

Cancer is the second cause of mortality worldwide and it has been identified as a perilous disease. Breast cancer accounts for ∼20% of all new cancer cases worldwide, making it a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Mammography is an effective screening tool for the early detection and management of breast cancer. However, the identification and interpretation of breast lesions is challenging even for expert radiologists. For that reason, several Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems are being developed to assist radiologists to accurately detect and/or classify breast cancer. This review

Focus Article: Theoretical aspects of vapor/gas nucleation at structured surfaces.

Heterogeneous nucleation is the preferential means of formation of a new phase. Gas and vapor nucleation in fluids under confinement or at textured surfaces is central for many phenomena of technological relevance, such as bubble release, cavitation, and biological growth. Understanding and developing quantitative models for nucleation is the key to control how bubbles are formed and to exploit them in technological applications. An example is the in silico design of textured surfaces or particles with tailored nucleation properties. However, despite the fact that gas/vapor nucleation has been

Evaluating true BCI communication rate through mutual information and language models.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are a promising means for restoring communication to patients suffering from "locked-in" syndrome. Research to improve system performance primarily focuses on means to overcome the low signal to noise ratio of electroencephalogric (EEG) recordings. However, the literature and methods are difficult to compare due to the array of evaluation metrics and assumptions underlying them, including that: 1) all characters are equally probable, 2) character selection is memoryless, and 3) errors occur completely at random. The standardization of evaluation metrics t
