[Bilateral synchronous multilocular epididymal cysts: a case report].

A rare case of bilateral synchronous multilocular epididymal cysts is reported. A fifty-six year old man visited to our hospital with a chief complaint of swelling of bilateral intrascrotal contents. Ultrasonographic findings demonstrated multilocular lesions of the bilateral intrascrotal contents. Preoperative diagnosis was bilateral multilocular hydrocele testes. Operative procedure revealed bilateral cysts originating from the head, body and tail of the epididymis without the cysts of the tunica vaginalis. Operative sight was bilateral synchronous multilocular epididymal cysts, and bilatera

[Diagnosis and therapy of popliteal cyst].

Popliteal cyst is a common peri-knee cyst, also known as a Baker's cyst. With the current development of popliteal cysts, the pathogenesis is mainly due to increased pressure in the knee joint caused by various reasons, leading to a fluid-filled sac that can form behind the knee as a result of enlargement of the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa. The current diagnostic methods include X-ray computed, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance. Among them, magnetic resonance imaging is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of popliteal cysts. There are various treatments, including conservat

Comparison of ethanol and sodium tetradecyl sulfate in the sclerotherapy of renal cyst.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Renal cysts are common in the adult population. Symptomatic cysts traditionally have been treated by percutaneous aspiration with injection of sclerosant agents. Our aim was to compare the efficacy and side effects of ethanol and sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STDS) as sclerosants for symptomatic simple renal cyst. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-five patients with 68 symptomatic simple renal cysts were included in this study. An 8F pigtail catheter was inserted into the cyst under ultrasound guidance followed by aspiration of the cyst fluid. Either 95% ethanol (N = 34) or 3% …

Parathyroid cyst: often mistaken for a thyroid cyst.

INTRODUCTION: Parathyroid cysts are rare but clinically significant lesions. They can be functional, mistaken for a thyroid cyst, and/or managed nonoperatively on occasion. METHODS: We identified seven patients (1 male, 6 females) with the diagnosis of parathyroid cyst from 1998 to 2003. RESULTS: Altogether, 33% of the patients had functional cysts. Sestamibi scans were performed in three of the seven patients, including two with functional cysts; none showed focal uptake. In toto, six of the seven cysts (86%) were found in an inferior parathyroid gland. All of the cysts had crystal-clear as

Endoscopic management of cysticercal cysts within the lateral and third ventricles.

In this report the authors review their 3-year experience with the endoscopic management of patients with hydrocephalus who harbored cysticercal cysts within the third and lateral ventricles. The management plan was to utilize an endoscopic approach to remove the cysts and to incorporate techniques useful in treating obstructive hydrocephalus. The ultimate goals were to avoid having to place a complication-prone cerebrospinal fluid shunt and to eliminate the risk of complications related to cyst degeneration. A retrospective analysis of 10 endoscopically managed patients with hydrocephalus and

Depressive symptomatology in a female patient with Tarlov cyst.

INTRODUCTION: The spinal perineurial cyst is a rare anomaly of the nervous system. It is also known as Tarlov cyst, since it was described for the first time by Isadore M. Tarlov. The pathology is defined as a cystic dilatation between the perineurium and endoneurium of spinal nerve roots, located at the level of the spinal ganglion and filled with cerebrospinal fluid but without communication with the perineurial subarachnoid space. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 56-year-old female who reported sudden onset of symptoms of a depressive symptomatology accompanied with acute pain in the

Ciliary subcompartments and cysto-proteins.

Renal cystic diseases are conditions in which parts of or entire nephrons become enlarged and create fluid-filled cysts. These cysts occur in many genetic diseases. Most of the products of causative genes, termed cysto-proteins, are localized in cilia and/or centrioles. In addition, mutant mice lacking cilia develop renal cysts. Therefore, cilia are thought to have an important role in renal cystogenesis. The cilium is a tiny projection from the cell surface; however, it can be divided into several subcompartments. These subcompartments have specific roles. This review attempts to classify cys

Gastric duplication cysts expressing carcinoembryonic antigen mimicking cystic pancreatic neoplasms in two adults.

Gastric duplication cysts in adults are very rare and usually found incidentally during evaluation for an unrelated ailment. When they are found in close proximity to the pancreas, they can be confused with cystic neoplasms of the pancreas, which are typically also asymptomatic yet more common. As part of the evaluation of cystic pancreatic lesions, cyst fluid analysis for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is undertaken to determine malignant potential. Herein we present two cases of cystic lesions thought to arise from the pancreas found to have elevated preoperative cystic CEA levels. At operat…

Histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of a thyroglossal duct cyst in a budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

A thyroglossal duct cyst is a developmental disorder that occurs in the neck, widely described in humans and rarely reported in animals. This paper describes the microscopic and immunohistochemical characteristics of a thyroglossal duct cyst in a 7-year-old budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) that presented with dyspnoea and lethargy and a radiopaque tissue mass in the ventral region of the neck that did not involve vertebrae or muscles. At necropsy, a fluid-filled cystic structure (3.2 × 2.9 cm) was identified. Microscopically, the cyst was lined by stratified squamous epithelium and had a t

Large mesenteric cyst mimicking an ovarian cyst in an 8-year-old: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pediatric mesenteric cysts, rare and usually benign intra-abdominal tumors, are a difficult preoperative diagnosis due to ambiguous clinical characteristics. The final diagnosis is typically established only during surgery or histological analysis. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old female presented with five days of worsening abdominal pain, associated with nausea, vomiting, and fever, as well as vague tenderness in the right quadrants on examination. Computed tomography imaging showed a 10.5 × 8.7 × 7 cm abdominal mass, most suspicious for a cystic mass of ovarian

Inhibition of Hedgehog signaling suppresses proliferation and microcyst formation of human Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease cells.

Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is caused by mutation of PKD1 or PKD2, which encode polycystin 1 and 2, respectively. The polycystins localize to primary cilia and the functional loss of the polycystin complex leads to the formation and progressive growth of fluid-filled cysts in the kidney. The pathogenesis of ADPKD is complex and molecular mechanisms connecting ciliary dysfunction to renal cystogenesis are unclear. Primary cilia mediate Hedgehog signaling, which modulates cell proliferation and differentiation in a tissue-dependent manner. Previously, we showed that Hedg

Choroid Plexus Cyst in a Neonatal Burmeister's Porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis).

Neuroectodermal developmental anomalies are reported rarely in cetaceans and central nervous system cysts are not described. We describe the gross, microscopical, histochemical and immunohistochemical features of a neuraxial myelencephalic cyst in a stranded neonatal Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis). Grossly, a subdural, extra-axial, well-demarcated, yellow fluid-filled cystic structure (1.9 × 1.6 × 1 cm) expanded the left foramen of Luschka, the left caudolateral cerebellar recess and the left cranioventral myelencephalon. The cyst displaced the ipsilateral ventral paraflocculus a

Acquired Chiari I Malformation with Syringomyelia Secondary to Colloid Cyst with Hydrocephalus-Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired Chiari malformation and associated syringomyelia have been previously described following lumbar puncture/drainage, lumboperitoneal shunts, and spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leakage. In addition to these etiologies, space-occupying lesions such as meningiomas, epidermoid cysts, medulloblastomas, and arachnoid cysts are rare causes of acquired Chiari malformation and syringomyelia. We report a rare case of colloid cyst with hydrocephalus causing secondary Chiari malformation with syringomyelia. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old lady presented with neck pain and difficulty in

[A Case of Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma of the Retroperitoneum Supposed to Be Derived from Ectopic Ovarian Tissue].

Most tumors arising in the retroperitoneum are non-epithelial, and epithelial tumors are very rare. We report a case of mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the retroperitoneum supposed to be derived from ectopic ovarian tissue. A 56-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal distention, and an abdominal CT scan revealed a cystic tumor of the right lower retroperitoneum. We had been observing the patient for 10 years for this lesion, but at this point, the tumor showed an increase in size and nodules had appeared inside of the cyst. It was presumed to be malignant, and so the d

Large thyroid cyst in a patient with congenital hypothyroidism.

Thyroid hormone biosynthetic defects are rare causes of congenital hypothyroidism. Although, initial presentations are usually diffuse goiter and hypothyroidism, subsequently they may develop thyroid nodules and or thyroid cancer. We describe a case of hypothyroidism due to dyshormonogenesis whose one of the previously solid nodules degenerates into a large cyst. A 22-year-old male was referred to our clinic for evaluation of enlarging thyroid nodule. Hypothyroidism was diagnosed in infancy, however due to poor compliance to treatment TSH values were elevated most of the times. When he was fif

[C-P angle epidermoid carcinoma: a case report].

The patient, a 39-year-old man, underwent initial surgery for total removal of a left C-P angle tumor histologically diagnosed as epidermoid carcinoma. Postoperative irradiation therapy was administered over the whole brain and spinal cord, 50 Gy and 20 Gy respectively. The patient was then released without symptoms. 15 months later, he was readmitted for paraparesis and urinary retention. CT scan revealed no tumor recurrence in the intracranial area but did show intraspinal cyst of the lower thoracic level. After cyst-subarachnoid shunt, severe acute hydrocephalus was shown on CT scan. His ge
