The genus Oswaldocruzia represents a taxonomically diverse group of nematodes with global distribution. Although Oswaldocruzia species are widespread and exhibit a remarkably wide host range in some species, their genetic diversity and biogeographic patterns remain poorly understood. This study investigated the genetic variability and distribution of Oswaldocruzia spp. in nine anuran species from the genera Bufo, Bufotes, Pelophylax, and Rana across Central Europe and the Balkans. Two species were identified: Oswaldocruzia filiformis and O. ukrainae, each exhibiting a different range of host a

PURPOSE: We report here on an imported case of Haplorchis taichui infection in a Western country. Given their rarity in these countries, such diagnoses of heterophyid flukes can be particularly difficult.
METHODS: The stool of a 70-year-old Laotian woman with eosinophilia was sent to the laboratory for examination. Microscopic observations based on direct examination and two concentration methods were performed on the fecal sample. After extraction of DNA from the sample, Sanger sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1

Clestobothrium crassiceps (Rudolphi, 1819) Lühe, 1899 is the type species of the genus Clestobothrium Lühe, 1899, originally described from Merluccius merluccius (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea. Despite its apparently wide host and geographic ranges, this species remains poorly understood due to the lack of detailed morphological, genetic and epidemiological data. In the present study, newly collected materials of C. crassiceps from M. merluccius off Barcelona, Spain (NW Mediterranean) were used to provide the first complete description from its type-host and locality. An integrative

A 69-year-old female presented with complaints of persistent watering in the left eye for the past 8 years. She underwent a left external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) 8 years ago. On examination, left lacrimal passage irrigation showed regurgitation of fluid from opposite punctum. She underwent a revision external DCR with bicanalicular intubation and a portion of fibrosed sac was sent for histopathological examination (HPE). HPE showed a Microfilarial worm with surrounding granulomatous inflammation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on the DNA extracted from the specimen identified the species

BACKGROUND: Echinococcus multilocularis is a small tapeworm affecting wild and domestic carnivores and voles in a typical prey-predator life cycle. In Italy, there has been a focus of E. multilocularis since 1997 in the northern Italian Alps, later confirmed in red foxes collected from 2001 to 2005. In this study, we report the results of seven years of monitoring on E. multilocularis and other cestodes in foxes and describe the changes that occurred over time and among areas (eco-regions) showing different environmental and ecological features on a large scale.
METHODS: Eggs of cestodes were

BACKGROUND: Parasites of the family Spirorchiidae cause disease and mortality in marine and freshwater turtles; two species, Hapalotrema mistroides and Neospirorchis sp., are reported in the resident population of loggerhead turtles of the Mediterranean Sea, with the first being the most widespread. In vivo diagnosis of spirorchidiasis can represent a challenge in guaranteeing prompt control and treatment of the disease and is currently limited to copromicroscopy. The aim of this study was the development of a real time PCR assay with TaqMan probe for the detection of H. mistroides infection i

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive sampling through faecal collection is one of the most cost-effective alternatives for monitoring of free-living wild mammals, as it provides information on animal taxonomy as well as the dynamics of the gastrointestinal parasites that potentially infect these animals. In this context, this study aimed to perform an epidemiological survey of gastrointestinal parasites using non-invasive faecal samples from carnivores and artiodactyls identified by stool macroscopy, guard hair morphology and DNA sequencing in Itatiaia National Park. Between 2017 and 2018, faeces from car

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a major neglected tropical zoonotic disease caused by the tissue-dwelling larval stage of the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus. For individuals suspected of CE, the diagnostic standard is imaging using ultrasonography, X rays, or computed tomography. These resource-demanding and expensive procedures are rarely available in endemic rural areas where CE is most prevalent. There is a critical need for a new approach to identify CE patients so that they can be managed early in the course of their infection. This study reports on the results of a diagnostic app

Collections from the dwarf sawfish, Pristis clavata, near Darwin, Australia, in 1997 led to the discovery of the new onchoproteocephalidean genus Matticestus n. gen.-a taxon that has been referred to in molecular phylogenetic analyses in which it has been included as "New genus 8." Its type species, Matticestus anneae n. gen., n. sp., and a second species, Matticestus kathleenae n. sp., are described. Placement of this taxon in the Onchoproteocephalidea is supported morphologically in that both species bear a scolex with 4 bothridia each with a pair of bi-pronged hooks and spinitriches that ex

Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica are the causal agents of the zoonotic food-born disease fascioliasis. Africa is primarily endemic to F. gigantica, although sympatric presence of F. hepatica is known for some countries. The present situation of fascioliasis in western Africa, and Ghana in particular, is still poorly understood, and studies including molecular identification of species and variants are lacking. In this explorative study we genotyped 19 Fasciola isolates obtained by opportunistic sampling in the Upper East and Upper West Regions of Ghana. All isolates were identified as

Based on an integrative taxonomic approach, combining morphological characters and partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene, a new genus and species, Parasciadicleithrum octofasciatum, is proposed to accommodate dactylogyrids infecting the gills of Rocio octofasciata (Cichlidae) from a tributary of the Lacantún River basin, Chiapas State, southern Mexico. Morphologically, the new genus resembles members of Sciadicleithrum (Dactylogyridae) in the presence of membranes on the anterior margins of both ventral and dorsal haptoral bars. However, Parasciadicleithrum octofasciatum n. sp. shows morpholo

Considering the great efforts towards formulating a vaccine against hookworms, and the concerns about the spread of drug resistance through hookworm populations, it is justified to study the molecular diversity and population genetic structure of these nematodes. This work had the aim to develop microsatellite markers to investigate the genetic structure and the molecular diversity of Brazilian populations of Ancylostoma caninum. Seven microsatellites markers were successfully used to characterize five Brazilian populations. These findings may contribute to a better comprehension of the ecolog

Over 4 years, only two known cases of fluke invasions were diagnosed in racing pigeons ( Columba livia ) originating from different regions of Poland. In both cases, the invasion was characterized by a very high mortality (approximately 70%), and the source of the infestation was snails of the Lymnaeidae family eaten by pigeons. Fluke invasions in pigeons are extremely rare and to date have not been described in Poland. Therefore, the occurrence of the symptoms of hemorrhagic diarrhea and sudden deaths of either adult pigeons or nestlings were suspected to be associated with poisoning. Autopsy

Little is known about the genetic variability of the soil-transmitted nematode, Strongyloides stercoralis, in humans. We sequenced portions of the small subunit rDNA (SSU), including the hyper variable regions (HVR) I and IV from S. stercoralis larvae derived from individuals living in a rural setting in Cambodia. We identified three polymorphic positions, including a previously reported one within the HVR I. HVR IV was invariable. Six different SSU alleles existed in our sample. Although different genotypes of S. stercoralis were found in the same individuals, no heterozygous larvae were foun

Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode that causes severe infections in immunocompromised patients. The low parasitic burden of chronically infected patients makes diagnosis difficult to achieve by conventional methods. Here, an in-house (IH) method for the isolation of parasite DNA from stools and a PCR assay for the molecular diagnosis of S. stercoralis were optimized. DNA yield and purity improved with the IH method which included a step of incubation of stool samples with a glycine-SDS buffer and mechanical disruption prior to DNA extraction. For the PCR assay, the addition of bovine seru
