Authors analyse 106 patients that were operated in their department by Dixon's method, in retrospective study. They analyse indications for operations, lesions distance in rectum, endosonographic and CT findings. Basic principles of the operation technique are adequate blood flow, sufficient colon mobilization and tightness of the anastomosis being supplemented with transanal pertubation. Out of early complications anastomosis dehiscence appeared in 6 patients (e.g. 5.6%) out of which 4 were treated conservatively and 2 were being reoperated on (by axial ileostomia and drainage). BACKGROUND: Rectovaginal fistula (RVF) is a disastrous complication of Crohn's disease (CD) that is exceedingly difficult to treat. It is a disabling condition that negatively impacts a woman's quality of life. Current treatment algorithms range from observation to medical management to the need for surgical intervention. A wide variety of success rates have been reported for all management options. The choice of surgical repair methods depends on various fistula and patient characteristics, and its published success rates vary with initial success being around 50% rising to 80% with repeated

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of hiatal hernias and para-oesophageal hernias (PEHs) is lower in Asian populations than in Western populations. Progressive herniation can result in giant PEHs, which are associated with significant morbidity. This article presents the experience of an Asian acute care tertiary hospital in the management of giant PEH and parahiatal hernia.
METHODS: Surgical records dated between January 2003 and January 2013 from the Department of Surgery, Changi General Hospital, Singapore, were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Ten patients underwent surgical repair for giant

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) does not reduce the rate of postoperative complications, many surgeons still use MBP before surgery. We sought to appraise and synthesize the available evidence regarding preoperative bowel preparation in patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing patients who received a bowel preparation with those who did not. Two authors reviewed the abstracts to identify articles for critical appraisal. We used the

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infection is reported to occur after 2.2% of colorectal operations and is associated with longer length of hospital stay, greater overall healthcare cost, and significant morbidity and mortality. The incidence of Clostridioides difficile infection is greatest after elective stoma reversal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of prior Clostridioides difficile infection on patients undergoing stoma reversal. We hypothesized that patients with a history of Clostridioides difficile infection who underwent stoma reversal will be at an increased

Rectal duplication (RD) cysts are rare congenital anomalies that can be diagnosed with the presence of another opening in the perineum. They seldom accompany anorectal malformations (ARM). Two cases of RD accompanying ARM at opposite ends of the phenotypic spectrum, are described. A 3-month-old baby and a 2-year-old girl with ARM were scheduled for posterior sagittal anorectoplasty. The infant had an orifice at the anal dimple and the other had an orifice at the vestibulum posterior to the rectovestibular fistula. The infant presented with no other anomalies whereas the older one presented wit

BACKGROUND: Autologous gastrointestinal reconstructive surgery (AGIR) has become a key component of intestinal rehabilitation programs. However, the best surgical option for short bowel syndrome (SBS) remains unknown. This paper presents our experience using combined procedures as primary treatment.
METHODS: We collected data on SBS patients who underwent surgery from 2008 to 2021 in two tertiary European Centres. Combined procedures were defined as more than one technique used on the same patient. Charts were reviewed for demographics, type of procedures, complications, and outcomes. Data ar

In this review, the care of children with a previously repaired anorectal malformation is explored. We know that the surgical care of children with anorectal malformations is complex; however, despite an increased understanding of the congenital anomaly and significant technical advances in the operative repair, many of these children continue to have poor functional outcomes. In this article we focus on the common surgical complications, discuss typical presentations, consider appropriate investigations, and review the risks and benefits of revisional surgery in those patients that are 'not d

The goal of reconstructive vaginal surgery include: restoration of normal anatomy, as well as maintaining visceral and sexual function. Rectocele repair can be performed utilizing a number of techniques, however some of these techniques severely distort the posterior vaginal wall anatomy and subsequently may result in dyspareunia. We report two patients with postoperative dyspareunia following levatorplasty technique for the treatment of rectocele. The patients elected to have their levatorplasty released and their rectovaginal septum reconstructed utilizing allogenic dermal graft. Postoperati

This is an update of the WHO SSI guideline published in 2018, focussing on areas pertinent for gastrointestinal (GI) surgery and hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HBP) surgical procedures. Based on new information and appraisal of current evidence, the following recommendations can be suggested: During skin preparation, we suggest using alcohol-based chlorhexidine for clean, clean-contaminated, and contaminated GI and HBP surgical field preparation in the absence of a mucous membrane (e.g., stoma, genitalia, anus). Preoperatively, we suggest that corticosteroids and anti-TNF medication be disconti

Mechanical bowel preparation (MBP), a routine nursing procedure before paediatric bowel surgery, is widely should in clinical practice, but its necessity remains controversial. In a systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the effect of preoperative MBP in paediatric bowel surgery on postoperative wound-related complications in order to analyse the clinical application value of MBP in paediatric bowel surgery. As of November 2023, we searched four online databases: the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science. Two investigators screened the collected studies against inclus
