Confuse your illusion: feedback to early visual cortex contributes to perceptual completion.

A striking example of the constructive nature of visual perception is how the human visual system completes contours of occluded objects. To date, it is unclear whether perceptual completion emerges during early stages of visual processing or whether higher-level mechanisms are necessary. To answer this question, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to disrupt signaling in V1/V2 and in the lateral occipital (LO) area at different moments in time while participants performed a discrimination task involving a Kanizsa-type illusory figure. Results show that both V1/V2 and higher-level visual

Spatial attention is attracted in a sustained fashion toward singular points in the optic flow.

While a single approaching object is known to attract spatial attention, it is unknown how attention is directed when the background looms towards the observer as s/he moves forward in a quasi-stationary environment. In Experiment 1, we used a cued speeded discrimination task to quantify where and how spatial attention is directed towards the target superimposed onto a cloud of moving dots. We found that when the motion was expansive, attention was attracted towards the singular point of the optic flow (the focus of expansion, FOE) in a sustained fashion. The effects were less pronounced when

Temporal predictions based on a gradual change in tempo.

Previous studies investigating sensitivity to step changes in tempo and prediction of tone onset time have generally utilized isochronous sequences. This study investigates subjects' ability to detect deviations from a gradual change in the tempo of a tone sequence (experiment 1) and their judgment of the perceptually optimal timing of this tone (experiment 2). In experiment 1, inter-onset-intervals within pairs of eight-tone sequences followed a geometric progression to create a gradual tempo change. In one sequence, the final tone was presented either earlier or later than specified by the p

A near-infrared brain function study of Chinese dyslexic children.

Recently, two findings using functional magnetic resonance imaging of dyslexic in Chinese show the left middle frontal gyrus is a crucial area associated with reading disability. The purpose of present study was to replicate the previous findings using near-infrared spectroscopy and a consonant-vowel task which engaged finer-grained phonological processing. Compared to the control group, our study showed the dyslexic children had decreased amounts of oxy-hemoglobin and total-hemoglobin in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. These results supported the previous findings and indicated that

Approach and avoidance motivation in eating disorders.

It has been proposed that approach and avoidance processes may be critically involved in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). The Behavioural Inhibition System and Behavioural Activation System Scales (BIS/BAS) and Appetitive Motivation Scale (AMS) questionnaires were administered to 286 participants: 91 healthy controls (HCs), 121 participants with a current ED, either AN (restrictive and binge purge subtypes), or BN and 74 participants recovered from an ED. Individuals with EDs had higher levels of sensitivity to

Sonar detection of jittering real targets in a free-flying bat.

The auditory system measures time with exceptional precision. Echolocating bats evaluate the time delay between call and echo to measure object range. An extreme and disputed result on ranging acuity was found in the virtual delay jitter experiments. In these studies, echoes with alternating delays were played back to bats, which detected a jitter down to 10 ns, corresponding to a ranging acuity of 1.7 microm. The current study was designed to measure the ranging acuity of the nectarivorous bat Glossophaga soricina under semi-natural conditions. Three free-flying bats were trained to discrimin

Differences in finger localisation performance of patients with finger agnosia.

Several neuropsychological studies have suggested parallel processing of somatosensory input when localising a tactile stimulus on one's own by pointing towards it (body schema) and when localising this touched location by pointing to it on a map of a hand (body image). Usually these reports describe patients with impaired detection, but intact sensorimotor localisation. This study examined three patients with a lesion of the angular gyrus with intact somatosensory processing, but with selectively disturbed finger identification (finger agnosia). These patients performed normally when pointing

Impairments in source memory for olfactory and visual stimuli in preclinical and clinical stages of Huntington's disease.

Individuals in preclinical and clinical stages of Huntington's disease (HD) demonstrate impairments in olfactory functioning. In addition, HD patients are impaired in source memory for verbal stimuli. A task combining both source and odor memory may be particularly sensitive to early changes in HD. The present study examined source and item memory for olfactory and visual stimuli in 10 individuals with HD, 10 asymptomatic HD gene carriers, 8 nongene carriers who had a parent with HD, and 20 normal controls. During the study phase, a male and a female experimenter (sources) presented odors and

Lateral masking, levels of processing and stimulus category: a comparative study between normal and dyslexic readers.

The lateral masking effect results in lower performance on letter recognition when items are flanked by other stimuli. Using a new paradigm based on discrimination (feature analysis) and categorization (memory access) tasks, we investigated the influence of level of processing (as addressed, respectively, by these two tasks) and stimulus type (Latin letters, Korean letters and geometrical figures) on lateral masking. In addition, performance of dyslexic and non-dyslexic adult readers was compared. The non-dyslexic participants demonstrated a classical lateral masking effect with lower performa

Development of perceptual correlates of reading performance.

Performance on perceptual tasks requiring the discrimination of brief, temporally proximate or temporally varying sensory stimuli (temporal processing tasks) is impaired in some individuals with developmental language disorder and/or dyslexia. Little is known about how these temporal processes in perception develop and how they relate to language and reading performance in the normal population. The present study examined performance on 8 temporal processing tasks and 5 language/reading tasks in 120 unselected readers who varied in age over a range in which reading and phonological awareness w

Comparison of the effects of damage to the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortex on transverse patterning and location memory in rhesus macaques.

Monkeys with damage to the parahippocampal (TH/TF) or perirhinal (PRh) cortex were tested on two sets of the transverse patterning (TP) problem (A+/B-, B+/C-, C+/A- and D+/E-, E+/F-, F+/D-) and delayed nonmatching-to-location paradigm (DNML), with delays ranging from 10 to 600 s. Damage to either area impaired acquisition and performance of TP but not of linear discriminations (e.g., A>B>C>X). Damage to areas TH/TF impaired performance of the DNML at all delays but only affected memory for objects at the longest delay, as measured by a delayed nonmatching-to-sample task (DNMS) (Nemanic et al.,

The contribution of AERPs (MMN and LDN) to studying temporal vs. linguistic processing deficits in children with reading difficulties.

One of the factors responsible for the appearance of reading problems seems to be a difficulty in discriminating auditory stimuli presented in rapid succession, known as the 'temporal processing hypothesis'. In this study automatic discrimination processes were evaluated in 31 children with reading difficulties and 24 control children between 4 and 8 years of age, using a passive oddball paradigm, in which syllables (/ba/ and /da/) and complex tones were presented. Analysis of the MMN component revealed significant differences between the groups only in the task involving linguistic stimuli, d

The covert priming effect of faces in prosopagnosia.

BACKGROUND: There are many methods of testing covert face recognition in prosopagnosia, but it is not clear whether different types of covert recognition share a common mechanism. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether direct forced-choice techniques and indirect face-priming methods yielded similar behavioral estimates of covert ability in a series of prosopagnosic patients. METHODS: The authors tested seven control subjects and seven prosopagnosic patients. Six patients had an apperceptive prosopagnosia: one with childhood onset, three with bilateral lesions, and two with unilateral occipitotempo

Neurobiology of perceptual and motor timing in children with spina bifida in relation to cerebellar volume.

The cerebellum is important for perceptual and motor timing in the mature brain, but the timing function of the cerebellum in the immature brain is less well understood. We investigated timing in children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SB), a neural tube defect that involves cerebellar dysgenesis, and in age-matched controls. Specifically, we studied perceptual timing (judgements of 400 ms duration) and motor timing (isochronous motor tapping); measured cerebellar volumes; and related perceptual and motor timing to each other and to cerebellar volume measurements. Children with SB had imp

Multisensory integration in speed estimation during self-motion.

This study assessed the relative contributions of visual and proprioceptive/motor information during self-motion in a virtual environment using a speed discrimination task. Subjects wore a head-mounted display and rode a stationary bicycle along a straight path in an empty, seemingly infinite hallway with random surface texture. For each trial, subjects were required to pedal the bicycle along two paths at two different speeds (a standard speed and a comparison speed) and subsequently report whether the second speed travelled was faster than the first. The standard speed remained the same whil

Behavioral and physiological effects of cocaine in humans following triazolam.

RATIONALE: Cocaine abuse represents a significant public health problem. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists may attenuate the behavioral effects of cocaine and may be effective pharmacotherapies for cocaine abuse and dependence. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this experiment was to determine the combined effects of oral cocaine (0 and 300 mg) and triazolam (0 and 0.5 mg), a GABA(A) modulator, in 10 individuals with recent histories of cocaine use. METHODS: Volunteers received each of the four possible drug combinations in mixed order. Drug effects were assessed using a battery of subject-rated

Behavioral effects of flunitrazepam: reinforcing and discriminative stimulus effects in rhesus monkeys and prevention of withdrawal signs in pentobarbital-dependent rats.

Flunitrazepam was evaluated in several procedures that have been used extensively to study the behavioral effects and abuse potential of positive GABA(A) modulators. One group of monkeys (n=3) responded to receive injections of methohexital or saline (i.v.) while other groups (n=2-4/group) discriminated vehicle from either pentobarbital or triazolam. Other monkeys (n=2) received diazepam daily and discriminated flumazenil from vehicle. Finally, the ability of flunitrazepam to prevent the emergence of withdrawal signs in pentobarbital-treated rats was evaluated. Flunitrazepam maintained i.v. se

Clinical investigation of the lesions responsible for sensory disturbance in Minamata disease.

To clarify the lesions responsible for sensory disturbance in Minamata disease (MD), we clinically investigated the characteristics of sensory disturbance. In all patients with the classical type MD, two-point discrimination was severely disturbed, but the involvement of superficial sensation was relatively mild. On short-latency somatosensory evoked potential study, the component corresponding to N20 was completely absent with normal N9, N11, and N13 components. Although 14 of 38 chronic MD patients demonstrated intact superficial sensation, 10 of these 14 showed mild to moderate disturbance

Teaching participants with developmental disabilities to comply with self-instructions.

Four adults with mild mental retardation were taught to sort based on what two pictures had in common and to name each object and common features of two pairs as well as to comply with a series of instructions to sort the pictures selectively. The criterion task was to inspect a sample pair, sort through a deck of 15 pictures to find those showing what the sample pair had in common, and to repeat a series of pairs. They failed this task and continued to fail even after a supposedly relevant self-instruction. After being taught to act on what they told themselves, they self-instructed correctly

Naltrexone and morphine alter the discrimination and plasma levels of ethanol.

The opioid antagonist, naltrexone, reduces intake of, and operant responding for, ethanol, but reports of how the opioid agonist morphine alters these effects are conflicting. We examined the discrimination and plasma levels of ethanol with naltrexone and morphine pretreatments. Rats were trained to discriminate ethanol (1.5 g/kg; i.g.) from water, under a two-lever, food-reinforced procedure. Ethanol and pentobarbital, but not amphetamine, substituted for ethanol in a dose-related manner. Naltrexone reduced ethanol-induced, ethanol-appropriate responding to about 35%, but the peripherally-act
