Impulsive aggression in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: DSM-IV criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) include examples of 'impulsivity'. This term can refer to various dysfunctional behaviours, including some examples of aggressive behaviour. However, impulsive aggression is not included in the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD. The associations of impulsive aggression with ADHD were investigated. METHOD: Seventy-three male adults with DSM-IV ADHD, and their informants, completed questionnaires. Impulsive aggression was assessed by ratings of two criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD), involving hot temper and/o

Use of cocaine by heavy drinkers increases vulnerability to developing alcohol dependence: a 4-year follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: The development of alcohol dependence is associated with specific individual personality traits and previous consumption of other drugs of abuse. However, there is little information on these risk factors in heavy drinkers before and after they meet the criteria for alcohol dependence. This study examined the influence of cocaine use and the role of impulsivity in the development of DSM-IV alcohol dependence in nondependent drinkers in a 4-year follow-up study. METHOD: A prospective cohort study was conducted to establish the risk factors associated with DSM-IV alcohol dependence.

Treatment of early Parkinson's disease. Part 2.

The management of early Parkinson's disease (PD) involves the treatment of motor symptoms, and, increasingly, non-motor symptoms. Given the fast pace of clinical research in PD, clinicians are faced with the challenge of integrating the latest findings into the ongoing care of individual PD patients. Part 1 of this 2-part article reviews efficacy and safety data for the newest PD treatment options, as well as for established therapies. Part 2 of the article, presented here, reviews key data relevant to the assessment of potential neuroprotective therapies and the treatment of non-motor symptom

Clinical profile of compulsive sexual behaviour and paraphilia in Parkinson's disease.

This case control study compares the clinical and demographic profile of Parkinson's disease (PD) participants with compulsive sexual behaviour (CSB) to those with other impulse control disorders (ICDs) and those with no behavioural disorder. We found a higher dopaminergic load (p < 0.05) and higher levels of anxiety (p < 0.01) in the CSB group compared to the PD control group. On the NEO-FFI, a measure of personality style, the CSB group was significantly 'more open to new experiences' (p < 0.05) and significantly 'less agreeable' (p < 0.01) compared with the other two groups. Results suggest

Childhood-onset pathologic skin picking: clinical characteristics and psychiatric comorbidity.

There has been little research examining clinical correlates of childhood-onset pathologic skin picking in a sample of individuals with a primary diagnosis of pathologic skin picking. Using a sample of 40 consecutive subjects with current pathologic skin picking, we compared subjects with childhood-onset (before 10 years of age) pathologic skin picking to those with later onset on a variety of clinical measures. Symptom severity was examined by assessing time spent picking per day, intensity and frequency of thoughts and urges to pick, and social and occupational functioning. Of the 40 subject

A psychometric evaluation of the DSM-IV pathological gambling diagnostic criteria.

Specific diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling (PG) have been available for 25 years, since the publication of DSM-III. Little research has examined the psychometric performance of the diagnostic criteria. The goal of the present report from the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services (MIDAS) project was to examine the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of the DSM-IV PG criteria for psychiatric outpatients who screened positive for a gambling problem. A total of 1709 psychiatric outpatients were evaluated with a semistructured diagnostic interview

Maternal absence and stability of individual differences in CSF 5-HIAA concentrations in rhesus monkey infants.

OBJECTIVE: Early life events often lead to deficits in CNS serotonin function, which underlie a number of reoccurring psychopathological disorders. Studies using rhesus macaques have demonstrated that early maternal deprivation reduces CNS serotonin turnover, as measured by cisternal CSF 5-HIAA concentrations. In addition, individual differences in CSF 5-HIAA remain stable from the first year of life through adulthood. The purpose of this study was to assess 1) the impact of rearing environment on the early development (<6 months of age) of the serotonin system, and 2) at what stage of early d

Impulse control disorder in patients with Parkinson's disease under dopamine agonist therapy: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) encompass a wide spectrum of abnormal behaviour frequently found in cases of Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with dopamine agonists (DAs). The main aim of this study was to analyse ICD prevalence with different DAs. METHODS: We carried out a multicentre transversal study to evaluate the presence of ICDs in patients with PD chronically treated (>6 months) with a single non-ergolinic DA (pramipexole, ropinirole, or rotigotine). Clinical assessment of ICD was performed using the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Neural response to visual sexual cues in dopamine treatment-linked hypersexuality in Parkinson's disease.

Hypersexuality with compulsive sexual behaviour is a significant source of morbidity for patients with Parkinson's disease receiving dopamine replacement therapies. We know relatively little about the pathophysiology of hypersexuality in Parkinson's disease, and it is unknown how visual sexual stimuli, similar to the portrayals of sexuality in the mainstream mass media may affect the brain and behaviour in such susceptible individuals. Here, we have studied a group of 12 patients with Parkinson's disease with hypersexuality using a functional magnetic resonance imaging block design exposing pa

Impulsive compulsive behaviors in Japanese Parkinson's disease patients and utility of the Japanese version of the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: In order to evaluate impulsive compulsive behaviors (ICBs), such as pathological gambling, compulsive sexual behavior, compulsive buying, compulsive eating, punding, and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) in Japanese Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, we constructed a Japanese version of the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease (J-QUIP) and evaluated the utility of the J-QUIP in Japanese PD patients. METHODS: J-QUIP was administered to 121 PD patients. Diagnoses of ICBs were made via interview of patients or their caregivers. Subsequently, in

A survey of pharmacy students' experiences with gambling.

OBJECTIVES: To assess gambling among pharmacy students using the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). METHODS: Six hundred fifty-eight pharmacy students enrolled at Creighton University were surveyed to determine the extent and characteristics of their gambling. RESULTS: Four hundred eighty-eight students (74.2%) participated (mean age was 26.6 years and 63.4% were female). Almost two-thirds (63.1%) gambled at least once during the past 12 months. Slightly more than 16% (80) of students were identified as "at-risk" (SOGS scores of 1 to 2). Another 5% (24) were likely to be problem gamblers (SO

Course of pathological gambling symptoms and reliability of the Lifetime Gambling History measure.

The DSM-IV describes pathological gambling as a chronic condition with an insidious course. However, several extant studies characterize pathological and problem gambling as fluctuating over time. The present analyses expand on previous reports by evaluating changes in pathological gambling symptoms across the lifetime. DSM-IV pathological gambling symptoms were assessed retrospectively to derive diagnoses and capture changes in symptoms over time using the Lifetime Gambling History (LGH) in a sample of 1343 middle aged males from the Vietnam Era Twin (VET) Registry. Two to four weeks after in

Problem and probable pathological gambling among older adults assessed by the SOGS-R.

This study had three main objectives: to examine the prevalence of gambling and problem gambling among older adults, to examine the socio-demographic and gambling patterns of people with various South Oaks Gambling Screen Revised (SOGS-R) scores, and to examine endorsement of the SOGS-R items. The data were drawn from telephone interviews conducted with a sample of 1000 older adults, 60 years and older, throughout the province of Manitoba. Problem gambling was determined from scores on the SOGS-R (Lesieur, H., & Blume, S. (1987). American Journal of Psychiatry, 144, 1184-1188; Lesieur, H., & B

Nefazodone treatment of pathological gambling: a prospective open-label controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling is a disabling and highly prevalent impulse-control disorder not otherwise specified (NOS). According to the hypothesis of abnormal serotonin function in the pathophysiology of poor impulse control and pathological gambling, we assessed the efficacy and tolerability of nefazodone, a 5-HT antagonist reported to be effective in other impulse-control disorders NOS, in the treatment of pathological gambling. METHOD: Fourteen outpatients who met DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling were enrolled in a prospective 8-week open-label oral nefazodone trial. Nefazo

Spontaneous confabulations and behavioral and cognitive dysexecutive syndrome.

We have examined and diagnosed confabulation in a 20-year-old woman who had suffered severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) when she was 12. Spontaneous confabulations were associated with dysexecutive behavior involving perseveration and impulsiveness. The patient was amnesic during neuropsychological tests but did not present intrusion, confabulation or false recognition. She could evoke self-constitutive autobiographical events accurately and without fantasizing. The only difference between her false and true recollections is that the patient could never envision herself as an actor in a scene

Compulsive sexual behavior in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) is estimated to affect 3% to 6% of adults, although limited information is available on the true prevalence and impact of CSB in young adults. This epidemiological study aims to estimate the prevalence and health correlates of CSB using a large sample of students. METHODS: The survey examined sexual behaviors and their consequences, stress and mood states, psychiatric comorbidity, and psychosocial functioning. RESULTS: The estimated prevalence of CSB was 2.0%. Compared with respondents without CSB, individuals with CSB reported more depressive and
