Revealing mercury species-specific transfer and toxicity mechanisms in placental trophoblasts.

Environmental mercury (Hg) follows a biogeochemical cycle resulting in a variety of Hg species. Therefore, human exposure to the three Hg species inorganic Hg via crops and air, methyl Hg through fish consumption and ethyl Hg due to the use as antiseptic agent in medical applications is a rising concern. Especially pregnant women and their developing fetus present a vulnerable population. However, little is known about its transfer and toxicity in placental barrier building cells. Here, Hg species-specific transfer and toxicity in placental trophoblasts, which are the main cell type involved i

Non-adiabatic dynamics simulations of the S1 excited-state relaxation of diacetyl phenylenediamine.

The small molecule built around the benzene ring, diacetyl phenylenediamine (DAPA), has attracted much attention due to its synthesis accessibility, large Stokes shift, etc. However, its meta structure m-DAPA does not fluoresce. In a previous investigation, it was found that such a property is due to the fact that it undergoes an energy-reasonable double proton transfer conical intersection during the deactivation of the S1 excited-state, then returns to the ground state by a nonradiative relaxation process eventually. However, our static electronic structure calculations and non-adiabatic dyn

Comprehensive analysis of disinfectants on the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes.

The propagation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is constantly paralyzing our healthcare systems. In addition to the pressure of antibiotic selection, the roles of non-antibiotic compounds in disseminating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a matter of great concerns. This study aimed to explore the impact of different disinfectants on the horizontal transfer of ARGs and their underlying mechanisms. First, the effects of different kinds of disinfectants on the conjugative transfer of RP4-7 plasmid were evaluated. Results showed that quaternary ammonium salt, organic halogen, alcohol and g

A Comparative Study on the Oxidation Mechanisms of Substituted Phenolic Pollutants by Ferrate(VI) through Experiments and Density Functional Theory Calculations.

In this work, the oxidation of five phenolic contaminants by ferrate(VI) was comparatively investigated to explore the possible reaction mechanisms by combined experimental results and theoretical calculations. The second-order rate constants were positively correlated with the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital. Considering electronic effects of different substituents, the easy oxidation of phenols by ferrate(VI) could be ranked as the electron-donating group (-R) > weak electron-withdrawing group (-X) > strong electron-withdrawing group (-(C═O)-). The contributions of reactive

Investigating the Influence of Electronic Effects of Functional Groups on the Fluorescence Mechanism of Probes in Water Samples.

This study investigates the fluorescence quenching mechanism of formaldehyde detection probe Naph1 and its contrast probe Naph3 in water samples and discussed the effect of the electron-donating group and electron-withdrawing group on fluorescence characteristics based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We optimized the structures of the four probes Naph1, Naph1-S, Naph3, and Naph3-S (Scheme 1) and calculated the absorption and emission spectra, which were in good agreement with the experiment. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) were used

Melatonin rescues cerebral ischemic events through upregulated tunneling nanotube-mediated mitochondrial transfer and downregulated mitochondrial oxidative stress in rat brain.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral ischemic events, comprising of excitotoxicity, reactive oxygen production, and inflammation, adversely impact the metabolic-redox circuit in highly active neuronal metabolic profile which maintains energy-dependent brain activities. Therefore, we investigated neuro-regenerative potential of melatonin (Mel), a natural biomaterial secreted by pineal gland. METHODS: We specifically determined whether Mel could influence tunneling nanotubes (TNTs)-mediated transfer of functional mitochondria (Mito) which in turn may alter membrane potential, oxidative stress and apoptotic fac

Melatonin prevents conjugative transfer of plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance genes by disrupting proton motive force.

The widespread dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a serious problem and constitutes a threat for public health. Plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer of ARGs is recognized as one of the most important pathways accounting for this global crisis. Inhibiting the conjugative transfer of resistant gene-bearing plasmids provides a feasible strategy to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance. Here we found that melatonin, a neurohormone secreted from pineal gland, substantially inhibited the horizontal transfer of RP4-7 plasmid in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, melatoni

Photocurrents from photosystem II in a metal oxide hybrid system: Electron transfer pathways.

We have investigated the nature of the photocurrent generated by Photosystem II (PSII), the water oxidizing enzyme, isolated from Thermosynechococcus elongatus, when immobilized on nanostructured titanium dioxide on an indium tin oxide electrode (TiO2/ITO). We investigated the properties of the photocurrent from PSII when immobilized as a monolayer versus multilayers, in the presence and absence of an inhibitor that binds to the site of the exchangeable quinone (QB) and in the presence and absence of exogenous mobile electron carriers (mediators). The findings indicate that electron transfer o

Hepatic copper accumulation in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis.

Liver biopsy specimens from 18 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis were examined histochemically and by energy-dispersive x-ray microanalysis. Using two indices, we classified hepatic copper accumulation into three stages based on the Cu x-ray intensity of cuproproteins that had accumulated in hepatocyte lysosomes and on the binding ratio of postulated copper transfer proteins between the cytosol and lysosomes. Eight patients were in stage 1 with an initial accumulation of lysosomal cuproproteins, mediated by transfer proteins not saturated with copper. Two patients were in stage 2, in whi

Single Atoms Couple Molecular Coordination to Near-Resonant Charge Transfer in Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Chemical enhancement in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is generally attributed to interfacial charge transfer, yet how atomically defined coordination converts molecular binding into enhanced vibrational polarizability remains unresolved. Here we show that Au-coordinated Pt single atoms function as charge-transfer bridges within a TiOx nanocavity/Au nanoparticle architecture, coupling molecular coordination to near-resonant Raman enhancement. The Pt single atoms serve three interdependent roles: binding target molecules, modulating interfacial electronic states, and mediating charge

Interfacial hydrogen transfer for heterogeneous catalysis.

The efficient transfer of hydrogen species at interfaces is a crucial yet poorly understood determinant in heterogeneous catalytic systems, involving energy conversion, chemical synthesis and pollution abatement. This interfacial hydrogen transfer (IHT), which shuttles key hydrogen intermediates from their formation sites to reaction sites, often dictates overall catalytic efficiency and selectivity. However, fundamental questions remain related to the driving force and structure-activity relationship in IHT processes, as well as the potential interplay between different IHT pathways in comple

Synthesis, structural characterization and rigidity dependent dual phosphorescence behavior of high-energy phosphorescent zinc(II) cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene complexes.

The study explores the synthesis, structural characterization, and photophysical properties of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (cAAC) zinc(II) complexes, focusing on their unique rigidity-dependent dual phosphorescence behavior. Starting from previously reported dimeric [Zn2X2(μ-X)2(cAAC)2] (X = Cl, Br), halide abstraction with Et3Si+ gives dicationic tetramers with an adamantyl-like Zn4X6 core, while the reaction with Na(acac) (acac = acetylacetonate) or KCz (Cz = carbazolate) leads to ligand exchange and isolation of [ZnCl(acac)(cAAC)] (11) and [ZnCl(Cz)(THF)(cAAC)] (12), respectively. While 12

Role of spin-orbit coupling in spin-to-lattice energy conversion in ferrite nanoparticles.

We report on the influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in governing spin-to-lattice energy conversion in ferrite nanoparticles (MnFe2O4, Fe3O4, and NiFe2O4). Using infrared thermography, ferromagnetic resonance measurements, and numerical temperature-profile fitting based on an analytical thermal model, we successfully identify and clarify distinct energy conversion pathways. Specifically, we decompose the process into three sequential steps: field-to-spin energy transfer, spin precession and relaxation, and spin-to-lattice heat conversion. Our quantitative analysis reveals that spin-to-latti…

Synergistic Control of Amine Emissions and Material Balance for Chemical CO2 Capture with Novel Solvents.

Chemisorption CO2 capture is considered a backstop technology for reducing carbon emissions from industrial flue gases. While water-lean and biphasic solvents have been developed to lower energy consumption and control capture costs, however, their high organic content introduces new challenges, such as amine loss and solvent component imbalance. Herein, an innovative and feasible integrated solution─water scrubbing coupled with reverse osmosis (WS-RO)─was proposed, based on the synergistic regulation of multiphase mass transfer and separation in the complex CO2 capture process. The pilot-scal

Iron Homeostasis and Energy Metabolism in Obesity.

Iron plays a role in energy metabolism as a component of vital enzymes and electron transport chains (ETCs) for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis. The tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and oxidative phosphorylation are crucial in generating ATP in mitochondria. At the mitochondria matrix, heme and iron-sulfur clusters are synthesized. Iron-sulfur cluster is a part of the aconitase in the TCA cycle and a functional or structural component of electron transfer proteins. Heme is the prosthetic group for cytochrome c, a principal component of the respiratory ETC. Regarding fat metabolism, iron r

An effective approach of lesion segmentation within the breast ultrasound image based on the cellular automata principle.

In this paper, a novel lesion segmentation within breast ultrasound (BUS) image based on the cellular automata principle is proposed. Its energy transition function is formulated based on global image information difference and local image information difference using different energy transfer strategies. First, an energy decrease strategy is used for modeling the spatial relation information of pixels. For modeling global image information difference, a seed information comparison function is developed using an energy preserve strategy. Then, a texture information comparison function is propo…

Viola seed pod architecture shapes sequential, force-augmented pinching.

Many plants explosively launch seeds, but these natural catapults often display inefficient, unpredictable energy transfer in seed ejection. Violets (Viola spp.) address this problem by ejecting seeds successively with consistent propulsive force from a single pod, a strategy that requires sophisticated energy release. In this work, we show that Viola achieves this feat with a simple and compact structure that generates adaptive force augmentation through sequential pinching. Our biological and mathematical analyses indicate that the pod valve's morphogeometry optimizes pinching with sufficien…

Resolving the dynamics of atypical DNA structures using smFRET.

B-form DNA is a structural icon in biology. Noncanonical DNA conformations are increasingly recognized as essential drivers of genomic phenomena. These atypical structures, including hairpins, G-quadruplexes, and multistranded junctions, are often transient and highly dynamic, making them difficult to characterize using traditional methods. Single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (smFRET) has emerged as an indispensable tool for resolving these rapid conformational changes and elucidating their role in human disease. Here, we discuss the sub-millisecond folding dynamics of singl…
