Most parasites of man in New Guinea are cosmopolitan species, widely distributed and highly prevalent in the island. Reports of other parasite infections are reviewed. This impoverished fauna includes anthroponotic species normally occurring at low prevalences, e.g. Isospora belli, Dientamoeba fragilis, Trichomonas hominis and a few zoonotic forms with pigs as reservoir hosts, notably Balantidium coli and Entamoeba polecki. Intestinal parasitic infection was determined by fecal examination for parasites with several complementary methods in 380 young Gabonese infants aged 6 to 24 months (190 with normal weights and 190 with malnutrition, matched for age). Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) is a common extra-intestinal presentation of amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica. The liver abscess may be complicated by rupture into adjacent structures. Common organs involved include thorax, peritoneum and pericardium. Rupture into the gastrointestinal tract is extremely rare. Stool specimens from 1,062 pre-school children in the Niger Delta were examined for the presence of intestinal parasites. Of that number, 77.6% harboured one or more than one species of intestinal parasites. Ascaris lumbricoides (51.9%) and Trichuris trichiura (41.7%) were the most prevalent species recorded. Over 1,000 stool specimens from residents of the Napu and Besoa Valleys, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia were examined. Schistosoma japonicum was detected in 31% of Napu Valley residents while in only 2% of the Besoa Valley residents. An epidemiological study on intestinal parasitic infections among schoolchildren in a suburban area of Hanoi, Vietnam, was conducted. Of the 217 schoolchildren involved in this study, 166 (76%) were positive for at least one of nine species of parasite (six helminths and three protozoa).
