Childhood asthma and exposure to traffic and nitrogen dioxide.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for a causal relationship between traffic-related air pollution and asthma has not been consistent across studies, and comparisons among studies have been difficult because of the use of different indicators of exposure. METHODS: We examined the association between traffic-related pollution and childhood asthma in 208 children from 10 southern California communities using multiple indicators of exposure. Study subjects were randomly selected from participants in the Children's Health Study. Outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was measured in summer and winter outside the home

An evaluation model for syndromic surveillance: assessing the performance of a temporal algorithm.

INTRODUCTION: Syndromic surveillance offers the potential to rapidly detect outbreaks resulting from terrorism. Despite considerable experience with implementing syndromic surveillance, limited evidence exists to describe the performance of syndromic surveillance systems in detecting outbreaks. OBJECTIVES: To describe a model for simulating cases that might result from exposure to inhalational anthrax and then use the model to evaluate the ability of syndromic surveillance to detect an outbreak of inhalational anthrax after an aerosol release. METHODS: Disease progression and health-care use

Genetics of early-onset Alzheimer dementia.

Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is the most common degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Although the onset of dementia is above 65 years of age in the majority of the patients (late-onset AD, LOAD), a small subgroup of patients develops AD before 65 years of age (early-onset AD, EOAD). To date 3 genes responsible for EOAD have been identified: the amyloid precursor protein gene (APP), presenilin 1 (PSEN1) and presenilin 2 (PSEN2). PSEN1 is the most frequently mutated EOAD gene with a mutation frequency of 18 to 50% in autosomal dominant EOAD. In addition, the epsilon4 allele of the g

Associations between outdoor air pollution and daily mortality in Brisbane, Australia.

The results of several studies have indicated significant associations between daily mortality and air pollution, with little evidence of a threshold. In the current study, the authors examined daily mortality during the period 1987-1993 for the Brisbane region, which is the fastest-growing urban region in Australia (annual average concentration of particulate matter less than 10 microm in diameter = 27 microg/m3, maximum hourly sulfur dioxide level = 60 ppb, and maximum daily ozone hourly level = 118 ppb). The authors conducted a general estimating equation analysis, and they used autoregress

Oral contraceptive use and cigarette smoking in Crohn's disease.

Previous studies have consistently found strong positive associations between smoking and Crohn's disease. The association between oral contraceptive use and Crohn's disease remains, however, controversial. In order to analyze whether smoking and oral contraceptive use are independent risk factors, a case-control study was performed. In 90 women with Crohn's disease and 90 community controls information was assessed about their smoking habits and their use of oral contraceptives. Smoking and oral contraceptive use were associated with one another. After adjusting for oral contraceptive use, th

Adaptive social distancing under variant-specific transmission dynamics in a spatial SEIIR model with reinforcement learning.

Epidemic control is inherently dynamic because viral transmissibility and human behavior co-evolve and vary across spatial scales. Consequently, identical intervention strategies can yield divergent outcomes depending on regional connectivity, temporal changes in transmission, and the relative costs of control. Many existing analytical and policy frameworks, however, assume fixed transmission rates or rely on static thresholds, limiting their ability to guide effective interventions in heterogeneous and evolving epidemic landscapes. We present a mathematical framework that couples a time-varyi

Neurodevelopmental effects of methylmercury (MeHg): a review of epidemiological points of departure (PoDs), toxicological reference values (TRVs), and key uncertainties in human health risk assessment.

The adverse neurological effects of methylmercury are well characterized in animal models and humans. Neurodevelopmental effects in infants and children following prenatal exposure to methylmercury have been the critical endpoint used for many years in risk assessment for the derivation of toxicological reference values. Most risk assessments of methylmercury have continued to rely on the same epidemiological birth-cohorts from New Zealand, the Faroe Islands, and the Seychelles, in which neurodevelopmental effects of methylmercury were examined during the 1980s and 1990s. New epidemiological s

Transfer of paracetamol across the placenta and fetal blood-brain barriers and its safety for use in pregnancy.

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is the most widely used analgesic and antipyretic during pregnancy and has long been considered safe at recommended doses by national health authorities. However, recent preclinical and epidemiological studies have prompted renewed scrutiny of its pharmacology and safety profile in the context of fetal development. This review summarizes current evidence on the pharmacokinetics of paracetamol in pregnancy, placental transfer and permeability across the fetal brain barriers. We also examine findings from both experimental and population-based studies investigating sh

Teratogenic Effect of OROV Infection: An Analysis of Its Causality.

Oropouche virus (OROV) is an arbovirus that has caused multiple epidemic outbreaks in several Latin American countries. In 2024, cases of possible vertical transmission with congenital microcephaly were reported, raising concerns about potential teratogenic effects. However, the causal relationship between OROV infection during pregnancy and congenital anomalies remains poorly defined. This study aimed to analyze the evidence on the potential teratogenic effect of OROV in humans through a systematic literature review, applying Shepard's criteria for causality. The available evidence supports a

Sex Differences in the Burden of Atrial Fibrillation/Flutter and Associated Heart Failure Stratified by Age at Onset.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL), defined as AF/AFL onset before age 45 years, can lead to adverse outcomes including heart failure (HF). The sex-specific patterns of early-onset AF/AFL and associated HF remain poorly understood, particularly in comparison with late-onset AF/AFL. METHODS: Using data from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021, we report the age-standardized rates (ASRs) per 100,000 population and changes from 1990 to 2021 based on sexes, regions and 204 countries. The contributions of risk factors, decomposition methodology, slope index of inequality

Aerosol pH associated with preterm birth risk: Unmasking the hidden role of atmospheric acidity in maternal-fetal health.

Preterm birth (PTB) remains a global health challenge, with atmospheric particulate matter (PM) exposure implicated as a modifiable risk factor. As major chemical components of PM, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium (SNA) have been linked to PTB. However, discrepancies between epidemiological and toxicological evidence hinder understanding of SNA's health effects, therefore requiring a potential modulating factor to explain its biological impact. In this study, we propose aerosol acidity as a key modulator of PM bioactivity. In a Beijing birth cohort (2520 singleton pregnancies, November 1, 2022,

A systematic evidence map of air pollution studies on various ocular diseases.

Eyes may be more susceptible to environmental chemicals, including air pollutants, than other organs because of the nature of their direct exposure to the external environment. Although the ocular effects of air pollution are increasingly recognized, studies that have systematically synthesized previous findings are limited. This study aimed to identify research gaps about the impact of air pollution on ocular diseases in epidemiological and animal experimental studies using a systematic evidence map (SEM). We formulated search terms to identify human and animal studies examining the effects o

Human Metapneumovirus: A Comprehensive Epidemiological Analysis of a Global Respiratory Threat.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a significant respiratory pathogen that contributes to acute respiratory infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Since its discovery in 2001, HMPV has become a global health concern, with epidemiological data revealing seasonal peaks and notable genetic diversity. The virus is associated with a wide range of respiratory illnesses, including bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and asthma exacerbations, leading to substantial hospitalization rates and healthcare costs. This review examines the epid

Risk factors and comorbidities associated with severe aortic stenosis: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Aortic stricture (AS) is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases in individuals 65 years of age or older. A number of epidemiological studies have suggested that certain cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) and comorbidities could be associated with AS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between CRFs and comorbidities and severe symptomatic AS in individuals 65 years of age or older in a Spanish healthcare region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted an epidemiological case-control study from a single primary care centre. We collected informa

Dose-Dependent Pulmonary Toxicity of Aerosolized Vitamin E Acetate.

Electronic-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) is a syndrome of acute respiratory failure characterized by monocytic and neutrophilic alveolar inflammation. Epidemiological and clinical evidence suggests a role of vitamin E acetate (VEA) in the development of EVALI, yet it remains unclear whether VEA has direct pulmonary toxicity. To test the hypotheses that aerosolized VEA causes lung injury in mice and directly injures human alveolar epithelial cells, we exposed adult mice and primary human alveolar epithelial type II (AT II) cells to an aerosol of VEA generated

Pharmacological Intervention through Dietary Nutraceuticals in Gastrointestinal Neoplasia.

Neoplastic conditions associated with gastrointestinal (GI) tract are common worldwide with colorectal cancer alone accounting for the third leading rate of cancer incidence. Other GI malignancies such as esophageal carcinoma have shown an increasing trend in the last few years. The poor survival statistics of these fatal cancer diseases highlight the need for multiple alternative treatment options along with effective prophylactic strategies. Worldwide geographical variation in cancer incidence indicates a correlation between dietary habits and cancer risk. Epidemiological studies have sugges
