Acquired injuries of the nasolacrimal apparatus may be the result of craniomaxillofacial surgical procedures, facial trauma, or inflammation. Injury to the nasolacrimal duct system following maxillary orthognathic surgery is rarely reported. This study evaluated the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of epiphora developing after Le Fort I surgery. The records of 83 patients who underwent maxillary orthognathic surgery over a 2-year period were reviewed. The prevalence of postoperative epiphora was 3.6% and it persisted for a mean of 32.7 days. No patient required further surgical trea

Horner syndrome was identified in 25 of 30 777 avian admissions to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital during 2010-2016. Unilateral ptosis and erection of facial feathers were distinct findings on physical examination and consistent across 9 species. Affected birds were biased toward adults (64%) suffering traumatic injuries (88%). Concurrent injuries requiring treatment were present in 38% of cases, and 76% had additional neurologic deficits. Prognosis for release was poor, with an overall success rate of 32%. Resolution of clinical signs increased to 44% with higher doses of meloxicam and required a

Lightning strike can cause fatal or nonfatal injuries. Some nonfatal injuries are associated with otological symptoms and findings. Conductive hearing loss due to rupture of the tympanic membrane is the most common audiovestibular lesion of lightning strike. Various forms of sensorineural hearing loss and dizziness have also been reported. Presently described are 3 cases of lightning strike injury. First patient had mid-frequency hearing loss in right ear and high frequency sensorineural hearing loss in left ear. Second patient had high frequency sensorineural hearing loss in left ear, and the

The on-site sports medicine physician must determine when nasal injuries can be treated at the site and when they must be referred. Conditions indicating referral include high-speed impact, loss of consciousness, associated facial injuries, and septal hematoma. Knowing the mechanism of injury is important; for example, inferior blows are likely to cause septal fracture, whereas lateral blows frequently result in displaced nasal bones. The physical exam includes careful inspection and palpation of surrounding structures as well as an intranasal exam. When the history and exam are benign, ice, e…

Revision surgery for occlusal correction in facial trauma is a highly specialized and technically demanding aspect of reconstructive surgery. While contemporary practices in primary fracture management have reduced the incidence of posttraumatic malocclusion, circumstances such as delayed treatment, insufficient fracture reduction, overlooked injuries, and complex comminution continue to create challenging cases in which revision becomes inevitable. Effective secondary correction of occlusion involves a deep understanding of both trauma principles and orthognathic concepts, rigorous diagnostic

BACKGROUND: Patients with psychiatric diagnoses are at greater risk for traumatic injury than the general population. Current literature fails to characterize how premorbid behavioral health disorders (BHDs) complicate craniofacial trauma. This study aimed to describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients with premorbid BHD sustaining facial fractures.
METHODS: All adults in the 2013-2016 Trauma Quality Improvement Program datasets with facial fractures were identified. Demographics, injury characteristics, fracture patterns, and in-hospital outcomes were compared in patients with and

A key step in the ability of neurons to survive injury and successfully regenerate involves ribosomal RNA production. Testosterone propionate (TP), augments facial nerve regeneration in the adult hamster. TP modulates the nucleolar reaction in injured facial motoneurons, such that mature ribosome levels increase more rapidly and in greater magnitude than with injury only. In this study, molecular and electron microscopic stereologic approaches were used to determine the effects of axotomy and steroid treatment on ribosomal transcription and processing in facial motoneurons. Castrated adult mal

Cardiothoracic injuries are crucial aspect of traumatology, resulting in significant morbidities and mortalities. Little is understood about the interrelationship between mechanism of trauma, and the associated outcomes. This work aimed to investigate the association between the mechanism of trauma and the induced pattern of injuries, as well as their association with adverse outcomes, namely mortality and the need for mechanical ventilation (MV). The current study is a prospective cohort study involving 229 patients diagnosed with acute cardiothoracic injuries. This work reveals an overall mo

The aim of the study was to compare open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) and endoscopic open reduction with internal fixation (EORIF) of condylar fractures (CF) in adults in terms of reducing both needing of reoperation and/or facial nerve injury. An electronic search was undertaken (PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and The Cochrane Library). The inclusion criteria were full text, published from their inception to June 2020, clinical trials, randomized or not, and retrospective studies, that compared ORIF and EORIF. The estimates of an intervention were expressed as the risk rat

BACKGROUND: For more than a century, unusual and complex deficits in facial expression have been known to occur following localized brain damage. Some brain injuries leave the face with pronounced alterations in affect whereas others result in movement disorders such as blepharospasm and Meige syndrome. There is also a historic trail of clinical observations that document deficits in either voluntary or emotional control of the facial muscles following central nervous system damage.

Facial nerve identification and preservation is a critical step in the resection of vestibular schwannoma. The use of intraoperative neurostimulation to positively identify the facial nerve along its entire course is essential to prevent injury. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a bifid facial nerve with a dual origin at the brainstem, which we observed during resection of vestibular schwannoma via the translabyrinthine approach. Both roots were visualized to join as one facial nerve trunk outside the brainstem in the cisternal segment of the facial nerve, and both trunks de

Periorbital ecchymosis - commonly known as "raccoon eyes" - is a classical indicator of traumatic head injury, particularly basilar skull fractures. However, similar findings may also arise from non-traumatic causes, including systemic disease and barotrauma. We report a rare forensic case of bilateral periorbital ecchymosis caused by facial barotrauma in the absence of external trauma, observed in a fatal skin diving incident. A healthy man in his 20s lost consciousness during the second dive of a recreational session and was recovered from a depth of approximately 20 m. The presence of perio

Dental and maxillofacial injuries represent an important but underrecognised component of trauma during episodes of violent crowd control. Blunt and projectile forces directed toward the head frequently result in tooth fractures, luxation and avulsion injuries, alveolar fractures, facial soft tissue trauma and temporomandibular joint involvement. Management is often complicated by delayed presentation, restricted access to care, overwhelmed facilities and communication blackouts. Using recent events in Iran as a contemporary clinical example, this commentary outlines injury mechanisms, clinica…

Management of the airway is a major concern in patients with maxillofacial trauma (gunshot wounds, facial fractures, cervical spine injuries, laryngotracheal injuries) because a compromised airway can lead to death. The method of intubation to use in these patients remains a controversial topic. Although there are many options available, each one has specific indications, and the choice will ultimately depend on the patient's situation and the expertise of the trauma team. In general, endotracheal intubation is usually not a viable option, but nasotracheal intubation and tracheotomies can be p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Assessing facial nerve injury in hemifacial spasm (HFS) remains clinically challenging; although delayed facial palsy (DFP) frequently resolves without treatment, anticipating its occurrence is important for patient counseling. However, reliable predictors remain incompletely established, and early recognition of corneal complications secondary to facial weakness with timely referral for appropriate ophthalmological care is essential. The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of lateral spread response (LSR) waveform morphology and compound muscle action p

BACKGROUND: Zygomatic complex fractures are prevalent among maxillofacial bone injuries due to the prominence of the zygomatic arch, which can significantly impact facial aesthetics and the ability to open the mouth. Although non-surgical interventions are available for mild cases, severe fractures necessitate surgical intervention. The surgical repair of zygomatic arch fractures poses a risk of injuring the temporal branch of the facial nerve (TBFN). This study aimed to develop a modern modification to reduce the probability of common complications.
METHOD: We conducted a retrospective study
