BACKGROUND: An increased rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is reported in extremely preterm infants. A potential role of human milk feeding in protecting against this condition has been suggested.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted based on data about morbidity in the population of infants born between 22+0 and 26+6 weeks of gestation, included in the Spanish network SEN1500 during the period 2004-2019 and discharged alive. The primary outcome was moderate-severe BPD. Associated conditions were studied, including human milk feeding at discharge. The temporal trend

Objectives: Lingual frenotomies for the purpose of improving infant breastfeeding remain controversial, whereas maxillary frenotomies are even more so given the scant data and differing opinions on the matter. This study aimed at further elucidating the effect that maxillary frenula have on breastfeeding difficulties in infants. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on infants approximately aged 0-3 months who presented to a tongue tie/breastfeeding clinic from January to December of 2019. All analyzed infants had both lip and tongue ties classified by a clinician. Data on pre-fr

Background: Changes in climate and land use can alter risk of transmission of parasites between domestic hosts and wildlife, particularly when mediated by vectors that can travel between populations. Here we focused on tsetse flies (genus Glossina), the cyclical vectors for both Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) and Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT). The aims of this study were to investigate three issues related to G. palldipes from Kenya: 1) the diversity of vertebrate hosts that flies fed on; 2) whether host feeding patterns varied in relation to type of hosts, tsetse feeding behaviour

Objective As direct jejunal feeding often causes great fluctuation in glucose levels, continuous or slow infusion is recommended for jejunal tube-fed patients. However, continuous feeding results in prolonged immobility and the loss of activities of daily living. We investigated whether or not intermittent feeding of a low-carbohydrate high-monounsaturated fatty acid (LC/HM) nutrient formula reduces glucose fluctuation in patients who have undergone jejunotomy. Methods Ten bed-ridden non-diabetic patients receiving enteral feeding via a jejunostomy tube were enrolled in this study. LC/HM formu

BACKGROUND: Overfeeding is associated with obesity and insulin dysregulation (ID), which are both risk factors for equine metabolic syndrome. How chronic overfeeding affects development of these factors is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the influence of long-term high-energy diet provision on body condition and ID.
ANIMALS: Eleven Shetland pony mares.
METHODS: In a 3-phase study, the high-energy group (n = 7) was fed 200% of net energy (NE) requirements (hay; concentrate: 36% sugar and starch, 13% fat) for 24 weeks, followed by 17 weeks hay-only feeding before resuming the high-e

BACKGROUND: La Crosse virus (LACV) infection has been shown to manipulate the blood-feeding behaviors of its main vector, Aedes triseriatus. Here, we investigated the effects of virus infection on serotonin and dopamine and their potential roles in host-seeking. In mosquitoes, serotonin depletion has been shown to interfere with blood-feeding but not host-seeking. Dopamine depletion does not affect either blood-feeding or host-seeking; elevations of dopamine, however, has been shown to inhibit host-seeking. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of LACV infection on the host-se

Mosquito and tick feeding activity represent a key threat for humans, livestock, pets and wildlife worldwide. Rearing these vectors in laboratory conditions is extremely important to investigate basic facets of their biology, vector competence, new control strategies, as well as mechanisms of pesticide resistance. However, the use of animals or humans to provide blood for hematophagous arthropod feeding poses a strict limit to these researches, due to the accidental transmission of diseases, ethical problems concerning animal welfare, as well as expensive and time-consuming animal rearing proc

PURPOSE: Few data are available about optimal nutrition modalities in mechanically ventilated patients with shock. Our objective was to assess associations linking early nutrition (<48 h after intubation), feeding route and calorie intake to mortality and risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in patients with invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and shock.
METHODS: In the prospective OutcomeRea database, we identified adults with IMV >72 h and shock (arterial systolic pressure <90 mmHg) within 48 h after intubation. A marginal structural Cox model was used to create a pseudo-populati

BACKGROUND: The appropriate calorie intake to be provided to critically ill patients via enteral nutrition (EN) remains unclear. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to compare the effect of initial underfeeding and full feeding in acutely critically ill patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched the Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases to identify randomized controlled trials that compared underfeeding with full feeding in critically ill patients. The primary outcome was overall mortality. The secondary outcomes included leng

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Infant and adult obesity is becoming a real public health concern in Romania, similar to other countries of the European Union. Maternal obesity and excessive weight gain during pregnancy are proven risk factors for the obesity of the child. The protective role of the breastfeeding against obesity has also been demonstrated. The most important issue is whether the choice of a milk formula with the right protein composition could or not protect the newborn from becoming a future obese infant and child. Our study aims to describe the characteristics of a group of macrosomic

PURPOSE: In addition to genetic risk, environmental factors might influence coeliac disease (CD) development. We sought to assess the effect of the interaction between milk-feeding practices and the HLA-DQ genotype on peripheral lymphocyte subsets and their activation markers in infants at familial risk for CD.
METHODS: 170 newborns were classified in 3 different genetic risk groups (high risk, HR; intermediate risk, IR; and low risk, LR) after DQB1 and DQA1 typing. Lymphocyte subsets were studied at the age of 4 months by flow cytometry analysis.
RESULTS: 79 infants were receiving exclusive

BACKGROUND: Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease leading to limb weakness, wasting and respiratory failure. Prolonged poor nutritional intake causes fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition. Consequently, disease progression requires decisions to be made regarding enteral tube feeding. The present study aimed to investigate the survival, nutritional status and complications in patients with MND treated with enteral tube feeding.
METHODS: A retrospective case note review was performed to identify patients diagnosed with MND who were treated with enteral tube feed

INTRODUCTION: Pharyngocutaneous fistula is one of the most common nonfatal laryngectomy complications (7.6% to 65% of all total patients). Preoperative radiotherapy, advanced tumor stage, poor preoperative medical status, and concomitant pharyngectomy are usually accepted causative factors in fistula formation. Delay of oral feeding is a common practice used by head and neck surgeons to prevent the development of pharyngocutaneous fistula. In this article we analyze our experience with special emphasis given to the early start of postoperative feeding.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The postoperative

BACKGROUND: Severe acute pancreatitis may be protracted and some form of nutritional support is frequently required to maintain the patient's nutritional status. Recent work has suggested that enteral feeding via a jejunal route of delivery may reduce the magnitude of the inflammatory response. Insertion of nasojejunal (NJ) tubes in the patient with severe acute pancreatitis involves both delay and inconvenience. We undertook a prospective, feasibility study to assess the safety and practicability of nasogastric (NG) feeding in patients with severe acute pancreatitis.

A rapid assay for tetracyclines in premixes and mixed feeds is described, which uses the extraction and dilution systems of AOAC methods, and a strain of Bacillus stearothermophilus ATCC 12980 selected to grow at 40 degrees C. The incubation period is 4.5 h. The rapid assay yields results similar to those obtained using the AOAC methods. For a 50 g chlortetracycline (CTC)/lb commercial premix, the rapid procedure averaged 109.2% of label vs 104.4% obtained using the AOAC method; for a 20 g CTC/lb premix, the rapid procedure averaged 89.2% vs 89.3% obtained with the AOAC method. In 2 commercial
