BACKGROUND/AIMS: Dry skin, or xerosis, is a common condition and a key feature of skin diseases like atopic dermatitis (AD) and ichthyosis vulgaris. Foot xerosis may exist without underlying disease and could be related to very mild forms of AD or ichthyosis vulgaris. The synthesis of important skin lipids (cholesterol, free fatty acids and ceramides) is reduced in xerosis and AD, and reduced lipid synthesis is responsible for a lack of lipids and enzymes in the skin barrier. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a medical modality that uses a combination of visible light and a photosensitive compound in the presence of oxygen. Adams-Oliver syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) and variable degrees of terminal transverse limb defects. We report on a neonatal case with the sporadic form of the disease with minimal expression, illustrating the wide spectrum of clinical expression in Adams-Oliver syndrome. We also review the literature and highlight the different pathogenetic hypotheses of this syndrome.

We describe the first case of white grain pedal eumycetoma caused by Phaeoacremonium krajdenii in a 41-year-old man from Goa, India. Based on histological examination of biopsy tissue showing serpentine granules, a culture of the granules yielding phaeoid fungal colonies, and morphological characteristics and sequence comparison of the partial beta-tubulin gene with the ex-type isolate of P. krajdenii, the causal agent was identified as P. krajdenii.

We describe a nail drilling method suitable for the diagnosis of onychomycosis. Thirty-three patients with onychomycosis in which the big toenail had a white band or spike were enrolled in this study. Three cases of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCHO) or pustulotic arthro-osteitis (PAO) associated with plantar pustulosis are presented. Two of them were associated with psoriasis vulgaris although the pustulosis was of a different histological type in each case. Anatomo-pathological study of two of these three cases shows that this hyperostosis is secondary to an inflammatory osteomedulloperiosteal remodelling suggesting an infectious origin which remains to be proven. The relationship of this syndrome with some seronegative spondylarthropathies cannot, however, be excluded.

Redness and scaling of the feet in prepubertal children is likely to represent a skin disease other than tinea pedis. If the dermatitis involves the dorsum of the feet, allergic contact dermatitis is a likely cause.
