[The concept of the acute abdomen].

The term "acute abdomen" stands for a group of abdominal symptoms which rapidly get worse and therefore require immediate treatment--especially conditions associated with peritonitis, ileus or massive bleeding. No time should be wasted on lengthy diagnosis or organizational problems. In the majority of cases a simple clinical diagnosis gives sufficient indication for surgery. Various manifestations simulating acute abdomen in children are discussed in order to prevent unnecessary laparotomy.

Iatrogenic ureteral injuries and their prevention in colorectal surgery: results from a nationwide survey.

AIM: Iatrogenic ureteral injury (IUI) occurs rarely during colorectal surgery but is associated with significant mortality, morbidity and medicolegal issues. Few cases are reported, and recommendations regarding prevention are lacking. The aim of this study is to describe the current state of practice regarding IUI and its prevention among general surgeons in Switzerland. METHOD: All Swiss general surgeons who are members of either the Swiss Association of Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Surgery or the Swiss Surgical Society were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey. Current status of robot-assisted surgery.

The introduction of robot-assisted surgery, and specifically the da Vinci Surgical System, is one of the biggest breakthroughs in surgery since the introduction of anaesthesia, and represents the most significant advancement in minimally invasive surgery of this decade. One of the first surgical uses of the robot was in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, and cardiac surgery. However, it was the use in urology, and particularly in prostate surgery, that led to its widespread popularity. Robotic surgery, is also widely used in other surgical specialties including general surgery, gynaecology, and head …

A simple test: please draw the incision. It is not as easy as we may think.

PURPOSE: Book knowledge and preparation is important to the education of a surgeon. The ability of a trainee to apply book knowledge to the actual performance of a procedure is perhaps underestimated by experienced surgeons, as is the role of the teacher in the translation of this information in the operating theater. The purpose of this study is to reveal some of the obstacles in surgical training and to underscore the importance of attending surgeon guidance in overcoming these hurdles. METHODS: Residents in an integrated plastic surgery program were instructed to prepare for their first ca

[Clinical and epidemiological analysis of 1,451 pediatric surgery consultations in a third level hospital referred from the primary health care sector].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the pediatric surgery demands in a third level hospital due to referrals from the primary health care sector in order to better plan the work and continuing education programs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The total number of patients (1,451) consulting a service of pediatric surgery for the first time and referred from the primary care sector during a twelve month period were studied. RESULTS: A total number of 1,451 children, with a maximum age of 14 years consulted. The assistential pressure was 22.01 consultations/pediatrician/day in one year. C

Educational Impact of Automated Feedback Systems in Surgical Training: A Systematic Review With Quantitative Synthesis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of automated feedback systems (AFS) on technical surgical skill acquisition in individuals undergoing surgical skills training. DESIGN: PRISMA-guided systematic review of studies published between May 2013 and December 2024. Four databases were searched. Eligible studies compared AFS with no feedback or assessed the impact of AFS on technical skill. Risk of bias was assessed using ROB-2 and ROBINS-I, and certainty of evidence with GRADE. The review was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD420251058650). SETTING: Simulation-based training environments,

Advancing Open-Access Education for the Surgical Team Worldwide: The Development and Rollout of the United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub (SURGhub).

PROBLEM: Training and professional development programs for surgeons, anesthetists, obstetricians, and perioperative nurses in low-resource settings are often constrained by lack of access to appropriate training materials. Potential learners looking to access online content are faced with internet connectivity issues, difficulties in finding and accessing resources, resources that are inappropriate for their context and training, and opaque content quality control processes. APPROACH: The United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub (SURGhub) was launched on June 28, 2023 to address this need.

[Clinical disaster medicine: recommendations of the Surgical Working Group for Military and Emergency Surgery].

In-hospital disaster medicine demands a structured, pragmatic and resource-efficient approach in the surgical treatment of patients under extreme conditions. The Surgical Working Group for Military and Emergency Surgery (CAMIN) of the German Society of General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) has developed guideline-based recommendations for making decisions, prioritization and management in disaster scenarios. The guidelines address the special challenges of atypical trauma patterns, as can be found in terrorist attacks or situations with mass casualties, such as gunshot or blast injuries. They hi

How I Do It: A Growth Mindset Workshop for Surgical Trainees.

OBJECTIVE: Growth mindset has recently been gaining attention among surgical educators, but there are limited data on mindset interventions in medical education. This paper describes the design and implementation of a growth mindset workshop for surgical interns. DESIGN: We followed a systematic approach to curriculum development. The workshop content was based on adult learning theory and experimental research on other mindset interventions. SETTING: 2 large academic general surgery residency programs. PARTICIPANTS: 70 incoming surgical interns. RESULTS: The 90-minute workshop includes vi…

Promoting Longevity in Surgical Careers: A Narrative Review and Fitness Program to Reduce Occupational Pain.

IMPORTANCE: Many surgeons experience work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) throughout their career. Incorporating evidence-based strategies to prevent and manage MSDs would benefit both trainees and those in practice. The present narrative review seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of current strategies to manage and prevent musculoskeletal (MSK) occupational pain among surgeons and trainees. OBSERVATIONS: Eleven studies were identified. Included studies covered 3 broad interventions: ergonomics (n = 5), intraoperative breaks/pauses (n = 7), and physical fitness (n = 1). Intraoperative

Alessio Spalla, court surgeon of Christina of Sweden and his unknown Queen's autopsy report.

BACKGROUND: Queen Christina of Sweden, a prominent Early Modern European character, died in Rome on April 19th, 1689. The scarce literature published about her illness and death agrees about the cause of the death in the diagnosis of erysipelas, that did not appear externally with an ulcer, but became manifest in her blood, causing an inflammation of heart and lungs. The article underlines the essential contribution of the learned surgeons to the development of practical anatomy in the late Seventeenth century as illustrated by the specific case of the Queen's autopsy report by the court surge

Negative-pressure pulmonary edema following maxillofacial surgery: recognize to prevent further complications.

Negative-pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE) is a rare respiratory complication due to acute upper airway obstruction occurring shortly after extubation. We report a case of NPPE in young adult patient who underwent an eventful general anesthesia. The patient presented laryngospasm followed by acute respiratory distress with pink frothy sputum. The NPPE was initially misdiagnosed, and a preventable tracheostomy was performed. NPPE was managed with mechanical ventilation and diuretics, and the patient had full recovery. Every anesthesiologist should be aware of the diagnosis of NPPE. Early recognit
