Day-long reduction of oral malodor by a two-phase oil:water mouthrinse as compared to chlorhexidine and placebo rinses.

Few scientific investigations have addressed the ability of mouthrinses to reduce oral malodor for periods longer than 3 hours. In the present report, we have employed simple, recently described techniques to assess the day-long reduction in oral malodor of a novel 2-phase oil:water mouthrinse (TPM), as compared to a corresponding placebo rinse, and to a commercial 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthrinse. Sixty dental students were divided randomly into 3 groups, and instructed to use one of the rinses prior to bedtime and the following morning. Measurements carried out in the late afternoon, about 8 to

The effects of tobacco smoking on oral and dental tissues.

An attempt has been made in this paper to review the clinical problem of the effects of tobacco smoking on oral and dental tissues. Clinicians are alerted to the magnitude of the problem and to its serious sequelae. An appeal is made for clinicians to disseminate preventive information, to exercise increased clinical vigilance and to consider the management of suspected neoplastic lesions as emergency situations.

Effects of Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 combined with green tea catechins on dental caries, periodontitis, and oral malodor.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the combined use of Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) for oral health maintenance. DESIGN: The effects of L. salivarius WB21 on growth of Streptococcus mutans, the insoluble glucan produced by S. mutans, and on growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis were evaluated in vitro. In addition, the susceptibility of five oral pathogenic bacteria and L. salivarius WB21 to EGCg, the inhibiting effect of EGCg on methyl mercaptan, and the effects of L. salivarius WB21 and EGCg in combination on growth of P. gingivalis were examined. RESULTS: Lactoba

Supervised machine learning-based classification of oral malodor based on the microbiota in saliva samples.

OBJECTIVE: This study presents an effective method of classifying oral malodor from oral microbiota in saliva by using a support vector machine (SVM), an artificial neural network (ANN), and a decision tree. This approach uses concentrations of methyl mercaptan in mouth air as an indicator of oral malodor, and peak areas of terminal restriction fragment (T-RF) length polymorphisms (T-RFLPs) of the 16S rRNA gene as data for supervised machine-learning methods, without identifying specific species producing oral malodorous compounds. METHODS: 16S rRNA genes were amplified from saliva samples fr

Estimation of the costs of smoking-related oral disease: a representative South Korean study.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to estimate the socioeconomic and psychological costs associated with smoking-related oral disease (SROD) with the aim of generating objective data that could be used in smoking cessation counselling by dental care providers and could also serve as data with which to set standards and criteria for use in dental health insurance. METHODS: Patients were sourced from the 11 dental hospitals associated with dental schools in South Korea. A total of 1,288 of 10,080 patients with SROD were selected to participate in the study for a period of 2 years fro

A novel and visual test for oral malodour: first observations.

Until now, the application of biogenic amines as bio-markers of oral malodour has been limited because of the complexity of their detection. This study explores the usability of a simple colorimetric reaction detecting amines in saliva as an adjunct test for the diagnosis of oral malodour. The colour reaction caused by a newly discovered enzyme capable of detecting amines in saliva was characterized in vitro. Two colour scales were developed by transforming the colours of selected dilutions of a mixture of cadaverine and putrescine into a 5- and a 10-point pink-colour scale. Afterwards, this n

Correlations between health status and OralChroma™-determined volatile sulfide levels in mouth air of the elderly.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a volatile sulfur compound (VSC) found in mouth air, is thought to be associated with systemic diseases; this in contrast to the two other VSCs found in mouth air: hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan (MM). This study aimed to validate the relationship between DMS in mouth air and oral and systemic factors. The subjects were 393 elderly Japanese volunteers participating in an oral and systemic health survey. They were surveyed for the concentration of VSC components in their mouth air and for their oral and systemic health status. Using logistic regression models, the

Assessment of treatment responses to dental flossing in twins.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess treatment responses to dental flossing in twins. METHODS: The study was a two-treatment, examiner-blind, randomized parallel group, controlled study. Fifty-one twin pairs between 12 and 21 years of age were randomized to a 2-week supervised and unsupervised treatment regimen consisting of 1) tongue brushing and toothbrushing (TB) and 2) TB + flossing (TB + Fl). Clinical endpoints were gingival bleeding (papillary bleeding score [PBS]) and oral malodor (levels of volatile sulfur compounds [VSC]). Analysis of variance and covariance methodolog

Zenker's diverticulum in the elderly: is operation justified?

BACKGROUND: Surgical correction of symptomatic Zenker's diverticulum is effective; however, elderly symptomatic patients may be denied surgical intervention because of perceived increased risks. METHODS: To address this concern, we reviewed 75 patients (46 men and 29 women) found to have this condition during the past two decades. RESULTS: Median age was 79 years (range, 75 to 91 years). Preoperative symptoms included dysphagia in 69 patients (92%), regurgitation in 61 (81%), pneumonia in 9 (12%), halitosis in 3 (4%), and weight loss in 1 (1%). Gastroesophageal reflux symptoms were noted in …

Notably, older age, living alone, and lower socio-economic status were associated with higher odds of edentulism. Mucosal Vaccination Against Periodontal Disease: Current Status and Opportunities.

Approximately 9 out of 10 adults have some form of periodontal disease, an infection-induced inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues. The initial form, gingivitis, often remains asymptomatic, but this can evolve into periodontitis, which is typically associated with halitosis, oral pain or discomfort, and tooth loss. Furthermore, periodontitis may contribute to systemic disorders like cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Control options remain nonspecific, time-consuming, and costly; largely relying on the removal of dental plaque and calculus by mechanical debride…
